25.01.2022 EX MATCHA PATROL 2020 Over the course of the weekend, 58 Carine Cadets were split into their patrols for a competitive camp in Northam, aiming to win the title of best patrol 2020. They competed in speed of a rapid tyre change, taking apart a canon, an escape room, raTel, target indications and a sniper stalk. ... On top of this, they also participated in a difficult PT session early Saturday morning, and raced each other back to HQ. Sunday morning saw the cadets wake up extra early for a navEx while the sun rose, before setting off on the Challenge Track, a series of difficult activities along a lengthy path. It was clear over this exercise that every single cadet really pushed themselves out of their comfort zones and experienced something new. Congratulations to the winners of the Matcha Patrol competition 2020; Best Patrol - 2 Patrol Best patrol commander - CDTCPL Lachlan Appleby Best 2IC - CDTLCPL Emily Winter Best patrol member - CDT Prinsloo

23.01.2022 Are you Matcha Patrol ready? Matcha Patrol is the units annual patrol based competition and is always one of the highlights of the 58ACU calendar. For many of you this will be your first field camp so here's a few tips from AFX last year to get your self ready. Make sure you hand in your consent form on Tuesday and ask your Seco know if you have any questions.... 1. DO NOT LET PARENTS DO YOUR PACKING! Cadets take the responsibility and insist you pack your kit yourself. This allows you to know exactly what you have and where it lives. (Besides all the gear has funny names which only you know). 2. Webbing: - Cups Canteen, [Top tip: make sure its clean and the handle locks correctly] - Japara ‘Water proof’ [Top tip: check it fits and has no holes in it, don’t wait until it rains to figure out it doesn’t keep you dry.] - Hootchie [Top tip: same as above check for holes and have it pre-laced, so you don’t waste time setting it up in the field.] - Head torch [Top tip: ensure it has a red light so you don’t blind people at night and put brand new batteries in, even the most high-end torches are useless with flat batteries] - Water bottles [Top tip: We live in Australia, it gets hot! You need to drink plenty of water. So, make sure your bottles don’t have any leaks. The water is better in you than dripping on the floor.] - First aid kit [Top tip: It doesn’t need to look after 100 people just have some basic meds (paracetamol & lozenges), blister plasters and whatever personal medication you need to be healthy epi-pens, inhaler etc]. 3. Main bag (Can be either echelon AKA ‘ech’ or pack, it doesn’t matter you won’t be carrying it.) - Spare uniforms [Top tip: make sure they fit and are kept water proofed in your pack. It would be a terrible day when you find out your dry gear is soaked because you didn’t invest the 60 seconds to water proof it at home] - Socks and underwear [Top tip: change them every day! There’s nothing cool or ‘hardcore’ about being unhygienic. It just makes people not want to stand next to you.] - Sleeping bag [Top tip: invest in a good one, your $10 Kmart one may have seemed like a great bargain at the time. But you won’t feel like that when you’re in the field at 0300.] [Bonus tip: WATER PROOF IT! see note about uniform] - Toiletries [Top tip: you need a tooth brush AND tooth paste, just like at home] - Jumper [Top tip: make sure it still fits, you teenagers have a habit of growing fast. So make sure it still fits from the last time you had to wear it] - Roll mat [Top tip: If you don’t have one, get one. You lose 80% of your body heat through the ground when you sleep (Supposedly, I’ve never been brave enough to challenge the science).] [Bonus tip: if it hangs off your bag put it in a sandbag (The unit has plenty) defeats the whole purpose of having everything in camo, to then have your bright red roll mat hanging off the back of you bag. Plus it protect the roll mat ] #Goodcadeting
