23.01.2022 Just Going Riding.... It's a well accepted fact that horses do much better when they occasionally get to go for long, slow relaxing rides and don't just get wor...ked in a ménage. And how good is it for the rider, especially after a hard day's work or long week? We've had plenty of old horsemen and women tell us that horses worked on the roads, tracks and in the bush are tougher in the legs due to the long slow work on a hard surface. Are some competition horses always worked on soft surfaces prone to breaking down sooner? We've heard that once or twice lately, too. What has been your experience? Maybe you have some advice to share. Or you can just tell us your favourite riding spot! Photo: Victorian High Country, Julie Wilson in Australian Horsesports

21.01.2022 KIBAH TIC TOC - One of The Greats of All Time This horse is an Australian born and bred Olympic double gold medal champion. Bred by 1964 Olympian Bridget (Bud) ...Hyem and born on October 27th, 1977, it is a wonderful story as to how he got his name. Anyone breeding a foal (prior to foal alarms) knows of the tedious hours waiting for the arrival. Sure enough if you leave, a disaster can happen in minutes, so you sit in your car! Well Bud sat in her car (at Carroll, N.S.W.) and according to son James, she constantly looked at her watch and thought 'Tic Toc' - there's a name!! Warmbloods had not been around long in Australia when Bud started this line. In fact, it was commonly expressed amongst experts that top eventers will always be only thoroughbred! His dam was Sandrift (by Big Hat) of Hyperion blood (thoroughbred) and sire was the well known imported warmblood stallion Domherr (Hanoverian). Bud also bred Tic Toc's half brother Kibah Sandstone - who also won eventing gold for Australia with Mat Ryan at the Sydney Olympics. We don't think there would be another breeder in the world to breed two Olympic gold medalists - and to be an Olympian herself (in showjumping) is surely a record. Much of this horse's early work was done by Bud's daughter Lisa, who attended pony club and local shows with Kibah Tic Toc. The horse was 17 when he won his two medals at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 with Mathew (Mat) Ryan on board. These were the Individual and Team medals. Anybody watching on that day will remember the last fence in the showjumping. It stayed up and they won the Gold!! Tic Toc's record at Badminton, England was also amazing - 8th in 1992, 12th in 1994 and 2nd in 1995 (competed three times). In 1999 Kibah Tic Toc returned to Australia to retire and just prior to the Sydney Olympics Bud got him out of the paddock, got him back to a fit looking eventer and rode in the parade in the Hunter Valley, N.S.W. carrying the torch. We want that photograph, do you have it? (Update: now added in the comments, thank you). On the 30th April, 2014 , at the grand age of 36 he died at the property where he was born in the care of Bud's son James. What a wonderful life he had, with the best of care. On March 3rd, the same year, Bud died at the age of 81. Bud was so far ahead of many with her breeding program. Today the majority of eventing horses are part warmblood, although admittedly a lot of thoroughbred blood has been infused in the European horses, but Bud was one of the first in Australia to do this and we acknowledge her and her famous horses.

21.01.2022 ....."You get along so good with her, because you like her." , the old man said. I tightened the cinch up another hole in the latigo, and rubbed the filly bet...ween the eyes. Of course I like her, I thought. Hell, I like 'em all. I turned to leave the barn. The yellow filly followed. No halter, no bridle. I was no stranger to starting two year olds, but she was different. First time with no adversarial thoughts between us. Would eventually be the first futurity horse for me, and first show paycheck. I don't remember that golden filly from decades gone by for the show pen success. I remember how she made me feel. In order to receive what is special from the horse, we must dig down, find and offer up that which can't be faked. In so doing, we discover ourselves. The good. The less desirable. "The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man." Often quoted, but incomplete. The inside of a horse is what benefits a man the most. Have a good Tuesday. JW

18.01.2022 It is our job to educate our hands and our legs so that we can align the horse’s body. That means working on our feel, timing and balance every day. Your feel, ...timing and balance will increase the more you ride your horse, but be warned, you can ride horses every day of your life and not become a very good rider. It’s a matter of studying these elements. It’s generally considered that one cannot teach feel. I won’t dispute that, but I do know that feel is certainly improved by awareness. Your feel will increase by being more aware of what’s happening down through your seat and your legs and the more obscure parts of the horse. Most of us are readily aware of what’s happening with the horse from his shoulders forward because it’s in front of our vision. We’re less aware of what’s happening behind our legs and seat because it’s not in our line of vision. This is where we need to be more conscious of feel. One of the ways you can do this is to count the cadence in your horse’s feet. Becoming more aware of your horse’s foot fall will give you a greater sense of feel. -Ian Francis See more

13.01.2022 Hazelwood Mantic was dogged with bad luck in his early years, but it was all behind him when he and Terry Hall won the prestigious Landmark Stallion Shootout in... 2018. Reading through his story we're reminded it was the strong mare line that attracted Ben & Rae Hill to Mantic. Ben had watched Romance as a young mare and seen her develop into the champion she was. He had similarly watched Conman & Romantic Oak develop into top level athletes. In Ben’s mind this was the strongest mare line he had seen and the weaner he was presented with was a Romance grandson crossed with Acres Destiny. Sure bet! 08.01.2022 YOU DONT HAVE TO FIX IT TO FIX IT. There have been studies done with people in functional MRI’s where they take brain scans of people's brains working in real ...time. What they have found is after learning something, the same parts of the brain keep firing, even when we aren’t consciously thinking of the thing we were learning. Soak time or Dwell time is a common phrase in horsemanship where you allow the horse time to process what they have just learnt. Studies have shown that teaching a horse something once a week versus every day, the horse learns the task in less repetitions. If you guys have watched the Separation Anxiety video’s with Bella, you would have seen her change over 6 sessions. That was about 5 months ago, and I only did those 6 sessions (if you haven’t seen them search my YouTube channel for An exercise to help relieve separation anxiety and An update on our anxious mare Bella). I haven’t separated her from a herd mate since, but today we put her current herd mate Oscar in the barn to keep Robyns new horse Rey company. After a while I was wondering where Bella was, and found her quietly enjoying her own company under a tree, out of sight of any other horses. Never underestimate the benefit of planting a seed. Photo 1-Oscar and Rey in the barn Photo 2- Bella hanging under a tree.

04.01.2022 Eagle Hustler is such an easy horse to own #getyourhandsonahustler

03.01.2022 I see posts asking what color is my horse. I found this handy chart. Posted with love as I am owned by two colored like the bottom right.

03.01.2022 "Am I a good rider?" she asked, pensively, sat upon her 14.2 cob, covered in poo stains that she couldn’t quite get out before her lesson, that she had persuade...d her mum to buy a year ago for just 400 as he wasn’t wanted any more. "Why do you ask that?" her instructor replied, for she knew how this young girl felt - her eyes often lingered somewhere in between her horse's ears or the other side of the school when teaching. "Because I want to be one." Her instructor pondered on this for a good few minutes, whilst reassuring the nervous cob in front, and then said: "A good rider is not someone who buys flashy horses and competes every Saturday and makes it to the top within a year. A good rider is not someone who jumps the highest jumps or owns the fastest horse. A good rider isn’t made just because they’ve been riding since they were 3. A good rider is not someone who can move their forward horse forward... No.......... A good rider is that pony clubber you see fall off every time she gets on something new, yet still gets back on with a smile on her face. A good rider is that girl who cries in the tack room because of how her horse behaved and how hard it’s been to cope watching everyone else be successful, but to her it seems like she is the only one failing, yet still rewards her horse with a treat and a smile because at least he was better than last time. A good rider is the boy with the angel horse, yet doesn’t claim any of its successes for himself. 'It was all him,' he would say, 'I just sat to it.’ A good rider listens. A good rider is soft. A good rider makes sure the horse is always happy, As a matter of fact, a good rider often has nothing to do with the riding. If you love it, and you try, and you try again, even when you fall off and it was your fault, even when people point because your seat isn’t quite as deep as they’d prefer, if you never give up, that’s what makes a good rider." by Daisy Henderson
