23.01.2022 Billy Joel released his fifth LP "The Stranger" on September 29, 1977. His four previous albums had been moderately successful, but "The Stranger" became Joel's true critical and commercial breakthrough, spending six weeks at #2 on the U.S. album charts. (It could never beat out the soundtrack from "Saturday Night Fever"). It is his best-selling non-compilation album to date, and was ranked number 70 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Singles rel...eased from the album include "Just the Way You Are" (which won the Grammy for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year), the acoustic ballad "She's Always A Woman," the mildly controversial "Only the Good Die Young," and "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)," which later lent its title to Movin' Out, an acclaimed hit Broadway musical based on Billy Joel's work. This album overtook Simon and Garfunkel's Bridge over Troubled Water to become the best-selling album on the Columbia Records imprint at the time. For many this was the first album by Billy that they ever heard let alone bought. We gotta ask, were you a fan of his work prior to this LP? Happy 43rd Birthday to "The Stranger"!!

20.01.2022 JOE 90 begins... This date in 1968 saw the broadcast of the debut episode of JOE 90, the British science-fiction TV series created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson.... The much-loved theme tune was composed by Barry Gray, an instrumental that became very popular on the northern soul scene. First broadcast on the ITV regional franchises between 1968 and 1969, the 30-episode series was the sixth and last of the Andersons' productions to be made primarily using a form of marionette puppetry dubbed "Supermarionation". This was how the series was promoted in the original ITC publicity brochure: "He's only nine years old - but he is the world's most audacious special agent! There has never before been a special agent like JOE 90 - and television has never before presented such an original, imaginative and intriguing series." "For nine-year-old Joe can do anything, thanks to a fabulous electronic device which can transfer the brain patterns of those who are the greatest experts in their field. When he receives these brain patterns, Joe, with the aid of a special pair of glasses which have built-in electrodes, becomes a man in thought and deed... can become the greatest of all astronauts, a dare-devil pilot, an ace motorist, a brilliant brain surgeon or whatever else may be necessary for him as the most daring of all agents attached to the World Intelligence Network... yet he still looks what he really is - a normal, healthy schoolboy. Every assignment brings new excitement, new hazards and unexpected situations - for JOE 90 and viewers alike!" Professor Ian "Mac" McClaine, a brilliant computer expert, has invented an incredible device called BIG RAT - Brain Impulse Galvanoscope Record And Transfer. It enables the knowledge and experience of one person to be transferred to another. He demonstrates the machine to his friend Sam Loover, by transferring his own brain patterns to his adopted son Joe. Amazed, and recognising the machine's true potential, Sam temporarily dissuades Mac from selling the machine to Convex Computers. Professor McClaine meets with Sam's superior Shane Weston, head of the World Intelligence Network in London. Shane eventually persuades Mac to keep the BIG RAT a secret, and to enable W.I.N. to use it for missions - with Joe as a secret agent! After all, who could possibly suspect that a nine year old boy could be The Most Special Agent of W.I.N.? According to publicity information, when Joe joined W.I.N. there were 89 London based agents in operation. Joe became the 90th - hence JOE 90. Thank you to everyone who has joined DECADE. As many of you know the page is just me, Paul. I write and research the articles, and edit the videos, often reinventing them entirely. It now takes almost an entire day of unpaid work to put together content for the page. If you could see fit to make a small donation then I would be genuinely very grateful. Thank you and best wishes, Paul PAYPAL: https://www.paypal.me/decade7787 JUSTGIVING: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/decade77page

16.01.2022 The Doors released their second LP "Strange Days" on Sept. 25, 1967. The album yielded two singles, "People are Strange" and "Love Me Two Times". The album cover of Strange Days, photographed by Joel Brodsky, depicted a group of street performers in New York. The location of the photograph is at Sniffen Court, a residential alley off of East 36th Street between Lexington and Third Avenue in Manhattan. The availability of such performers pictured was low, so Brodsky's assista...nt stood in as a juggler while a random cab driver was paid $5 to pose playing the trumpet. Twin dwarfs were hired, with one appearing on the front cover and one appearing on the back cover, which is the other half of the same photo on the front cover. Do you remember when you first heard songs off this album? And, did you like the records as much as their first album? Happy 53rd Birthday to "Strange Days"!! RIP Jim and Ray. Wish you were still with us.

16.01.2022 Congratulations to Dust Radio presenter & all round good guy Steve Ashley for winning the ARBA Roots Album of the year 2020 for his latest album " Into the Sun"!

11.01.2022 My friend Michael Gudinski was first, last, and always a music man. I’ve toured the world for the last fifty years and never met a better promoter. Michael alw...ays spoke with a deep rumbling voice, and the words would spill out so fast that half the time I needed an interpreter. But I could hear him clear as a bell when he would say, Bruce, I’ve got you covered. And he always did. He was loud, always in motion, intentionally (and unintentionally) hilarious, and deeply soulful. He will be remembered by artists, including this one, from all over the world every time they set foot on Australian soil. My deepest condolences to his wife and partner Sue and to the whole Gudinski family, of which he was so proud. Bruce Springsteen

07.01.2022 Don McLean is celebrating his 75th birthday today. Don is best know for the song "American Pie" which he wrote and performed. He also had a hit with the song "Vincent". We would imagine that you will hear "American Pie" at some time today. How many of you know all the words? And, with the fact that Tom Petty passed away on his birthday, do you think if Don wrote the 'American Pie' today, he would have mentioned him?... Happy Birthday Don!!!

03.01.2022 Electric Light Orchestra released Out Of The Blue, their 7th studio album, on Oct. 3, 1977. Written and produced by ELO’s Jeff Lynne, the double album is among the most commercially successful records in the group's history. The album had 4 million pre-ordered copies and went multi-Platinum upon release. It also spawned five hit singles. The large spaceship on the album's cover (by this time, symbolic of the group) was designed by Kosh with art by Shusei Nagaoka. It was bas...ed on the logo Kosh designed for ELO's previous album, A New World Record. The number JTLA 823 L2 featured on the shuttle arriving at the space station is the original catalogue number for the album. How many of you still have an original album with the cardboard cutout of the space station and fold-out poster of the band members? Happy 43rd Birthday Out Of The Blue!!
