25.01.2022 American debrief on the Growler, get to know what the aircraft does!
25.01.2022 A fact about the CO; I really miss seeing the Lancaster and other BBMF aircraft flying around since moving to Australia! They were a regular site at UK Airshows and often seen and heard travelling to and from them. Some interesting info here about other Commonwealth airmen serving in WWII.
24.01.2022 A pre-Christmas visit to check out the Loyal Wingman during December saw some high-speed taxi tests! Air Vice-Marshal Cath Roberts, Head of Air Force Capabilit...y had this to say: "Seeing the Loyal Wingman during the December trials has been extraordinary. "There is something very special about testing an aircraft that takes technology to the next level. It is iconic in its own way. Experiencing the enthusiasm of the Boeing Australia and Air Force team reminded me of my early career testing aircraft. This is what innovation is all about working together to achieve many firsts. "The Loyal Wingman is the first project of its kind carried out in Australia. It is the first military combat aircraft to be designed, engineered and manufactured in Australia in more than 50 years. More than 35 Australian companies have contributed to the Loyal Wingman program. There are many firsts that we will remember for a long time." Stay tuned! #AusAirForce #LoyalWingman The Boeing Company

21.01.2022 Good history for your down time, there are some good books available about WWII and the Australian perspective.
20.01.2022 A long time ago your CO used to live next to this RAF base, the Lightenings had gone and been replaced by Jaguars by then. Got to love the accents and old fashioned interviews!
20.01.2022 Interesting aviating!
19.01.2022 An elephant walk at US Air Force Base Elmendorf - identify the aircraft types!

15.01.2022 So 2020 is almost through, our last two activities were an end of year parade where I was very pleased to finalise training programs and award Leading Cadet rank slides to CDTs Bea Lewis and Logan Burr, congratulations to them both. They along with three other cadets have been selected to attend the 6 Wing Junior or Senior NCO courses at RAAF Edinburgh after Christmas. These are tough courses that produce excellent young leaders, candidates are not chosen lightly! The last ...activity was the final part of a two part NCO course preparation evening where candidates were given a small taste of what to expect on course and give them the chance to ask questions before they go. We all wish the cadets the best of luck for the course and I also take this opportunity to wish all of you involved with 612 Sqn, past, present and new members coming onboard a safe and peaceful festive season. Finally a big thank you to all of my staff for their work in supporting the unit and cadets. Special thanks go to Officer Cadet Breydon Verryt-Reid for giving up time from his personal break from ADFA to assist in helping us out.
15.01.2022 SPRING BIVOUAC // 612SQN This weekend, cadets and staff from 602SQN, 605SQN, 612SQN, 613SQN and 617SQN participated in the 612SQN Spring Bivouac, held in the Wandilo Forest Reserve and Telford Scrub Conservation Park. Over the jam packed weekend cadets participated in a range of activities including fieldcraft, navigation, radio communications, PT, teambuilding and leadership exercises.... Highlights for the cadets included a blindfolded insertion to and extraction from the navigation area, capture the lantern night exercise as well as PT and challenging activities on the Sunday morning. All cadets had a great time throughout the weekend, and made new friends with the visiting cadets from Adelaide. A special thanks must go to the staff from 612SQN for organising and facilitating the bivouac, as well as SQNLDR(AAFC) Tank, FLTLT(AAFC) Brunt and AC(AAFC) Harding who all made the trip down from Adelaide to support the weekend. We hope to see all cadets and staff return for another bivouac in the future!
15.01.2022 Happy 99th Birthday RAAF!
15.01.2022 The Northrop (later Northrop Grumman) B-2 Spirit is an American heavy strategic bomber, featuring low observable stealth technology designed for penetrating dense anti-aircraft defenses; it is a flying wing design with a crew of two.
14.01.2022 Love this picture, CO facts, we used to live about a mile from the end of the runway at RAF Coltishall when these were still flying and CCPL Yates was a wee bairn, these jets would do a running break at 500 feet and 500 knots over her when sleeping in her pram, she didnt even stir! Jet fuel must be in the blood!

11.01.2022 Wing Commander Jordon "Junior" Sanders, No. 2 Operational Conversion Unit's (2OCU) brand new Commanding Officer recently arrived with some brand new planes. ... Junior ferried one of the seven F-35A Lightning aircraft that arrived at RAAF Base Williamtown on 11 December. That brings our in-country F-35A fleet total to 13. The 2OCU team will fly and train in the F-35A in 2020. They'll initially turn their efforts to honing the course, before conducting their first F-35A conversion course in late-2020/early 2021. Another important step in the capability transition. Exciting times ahead! Find out more at https://news.defence.gov.au/capabil/new-arrivals-touch-down #AusAirForce #AirCombat #AvGeek

09.01.2022 DINING-IN NIGHT // 612 SQUADRON Tonight 612 Squadron celebrated the parade year by conducting it's annual Dining-In Night. A Dining-In Night is a millennia-old activity which dates back to the Roman times. After battle, armies would dine together in celebration of battles and heroes who fought in those battles. In the context of the AAFC, a Dining-In Night is an opportunity to celebrate the individual and group growth, success and achievements throughout the parade year. This... came in the form of farewell tokens to cadets who are ageing out this year, the traditional Wooden Spoon Awards and a visit from Kris Kringle to reward all the cadets for their efforts this year. Cadets also enjoyed banter throughout the night, promoting good-natured jovial interactions between cadets and staff alike (although the head table is invincible from this!). The night was concluded with Kangaroo Court, where CSGT Telford moderated lightheartedly fierce debate by cadets regarding the proceedings of the year. As always a huge thank you is extended to the staff who make activities like this possible. Well done to the President of the Mess Committee (PMC) CFSGT Verryt-Reid, and the the Vice President of the Mess Committee (Mr Vice) CSGT Telford for facilitating an entertaining and enjoyable night for all involved. Stay tuned for the End of Year Parade tomorrow!
09.01.2022 Well done CDT Lewis, another great turn out from one of our Squadron.
09.01.2022 This may be good? I have not looked at it in depth but recommended by other staff in another Wing. If you give it a go let me know if it was worthwhile.

09.01.2022 While we are in the Operational Pause, Mick Mullan Building and Plumbing is busily re-cladding our building and has had the opportunity to learn about some of our sites history and posted the below. There is always something to learn about wherever you are!
07.01.2022 The 612SQN badge has recently been redesigned by CFSGT Verryt-Reid and approval granted by Cadet Branch-Air Force. The design continues to highlight the local landmarks of the Blue Lake and Centenary Tower along with aircraft relevant to Mt Gambier and our parent station at RAAF Edinburgh, from top the Avro Anson was the primary navigation trainer based here during WWII when the airfield was an Air Force base, next the recently retired Lockheed Orion maritime patrol aircraft regularly seen in this area and its replacement the Boeing P8A Poseidon.

05.01.2022 A big thank you to Phil Richards from the CFS Air Operations Unit based at Mt Gambier Airport for the impromptu talk and visit to their aircraft! Cadets and new recruits received a fascinating and detailed account of how the units Squirrel helicopters and Air Tractor water bombers work together with ground fire fighters to tackle fires here in SA. Clearly a high risk operation conducted with ultimate professionalism. Hearing how they were involved in the recent Lucindale fire reminds us how lucky we are to have people like Phil, his team mates and the CFS on the ground!

03.01.2022 Very pleased to announce that 612SQN has passed all the safety preparation and planning tasks to allow the unit to start face to face parades again as of Friday 14Aug20. There has been considerable time, effort and work put into achieving this result including a deep clean of the frequent touch points like light switches and an in-depth brief presentation via Zoom to all the cadets and staff. The staff are all looking forward to seeing you next Friday!

01.01.2022 Check out this engine-uity! Think changing a tyre is hard? Try changing an engine on a C-17A Globemaster. Fortunately, the Pratt & Whitney F117 turbofans tha...t power our C-17As are pretty reliable, which means pitstops like this are a reasonably rare occurence. #DYK that a C-17As four engines each produce a whopping 40,900 pounds of thrust?
