18.01.2022 Be the reason someone smiles today The Penguin 7 Day Makeover team is thrilled to unveil its latest project to help spread kindness and compassion in our community. ... Today our wonderful new sign has been erected on the side of Penguins Letterbox Cafe encouraging locals and visitors to "Be the reason someone smiles today" . The Makeover group was lucky enough to be the recipient of a grant from the Tasmanian Community Fund (TCF) earlier in the year. Part of the money received was used to purchase the Kindness sign . We are grateful that a number of projects have been completed over recent weeks due to the generosity of TCF . We hope it makes you smile and think about how you can pass that on to others . Pictured below are Penguin 7 Day Makeover Committee members John and Yola with the colourful inspirational sign designed to spread to joy .

18.01.2022 Penguin - the site of Tasmanias first Silver Mine! Located on the Penguin foreshore along from the eastern end of town next to the blue "Penguin - sound of the waves" sign, is the old Penguin Silver Mine that commenced operation in 1850. The discovery by James Philosopher Smith of copper and silver on the beach near Penguin and in the Dial Range prompted legislative change allowing seashore mining. It was the first Tasmanian mine to attract significant mainland investme...nt starting a mining boom in the west and north-west. The mine failed with mining equipment removed by 1908 when the shaft was flooded and filled. You will find a track on the left hand side of the Lings Oasis sign that leads you across the railway line to the site and the picturesque rocky waterfront.

03.01.2022 BOOKS, BOOKS AND MORE BOOKS We absolutely love that the community supports our Penguin TARDIS Book Exchange . As you can see it is literally BUSTING at the seams and we need your help . ... As an interim measure we ask those generously donating books to refrain from leaving them in the TARDIS if it is full . Please dont leave boxes or books or items on the floor or blocking the entry . We certainly dont want your donated books to be ruined by the weather and over filling makes it hard for people to browse . We will investigate another alternative drop off point as our volunteers dont always have the ability to sort or store them immediately . In the meantime please head down to the TARDIS and grab yourself a book or 10 ! There are heaps of awesome reads to choose from .
03.01.2022 Sending a huge thank you to ~ Vicki Watkins ~ for getting the TARDIS back in order today . Looking absolutely fab once again . Lets keep it this way . The community appreciates your efforts Vicki, top job .
