21.01.2022 HELP NEEDED! We have had an inquiry on behalf of an 85 year old lady who has fond memories of her childhood in Picton. She is trying to locate the property where she stayed with her parents Daniel and Kate Dawson, between 1944 and 1952. Her memory is that they "..rented two different places from the O'Brien's who had the dairy and slaughterhouse. The first place was near the slaughterhouse and it was rumored that Ben Hall had lived there. ...remembers it being a log cabi...n, where tree trunks were cut in half and that was the outside, and inside the walls were covered in newspaper which was painted green. The second place they rented was in Oaks Road past the bridge and the first house when turning left. The dairy was further up. " The WSC electoral roll for 1953 shows an Alphonsus Thomas O'Brien and Bridget O'Brien as residents at Abbotsford. The Picton Post of 22 April 1953 recorded the death of Mrs O'Brien noting that her husband John had predeceased her but she is survived by sons Alphonso and Paul. Can anyone help?

20.01.2022 Happy 100th birthday to Qantas! In August 1919, two young aviators embarked on a journey from Longreach to Darwin mapping out possible landing sites for airc...raft. While journeying through the rough and roadless outback, Hudson Fysh and Paul McGinness formulated their ideas for a local air service. The company they founded was Qantas, and 100 years after their epic journey, it remains a globally recognised airline. This rare album contains the photographs taken by Fysh and McGuinness on their historic trip! Discover the origins of an Australian icon: https://www.sl.nsw.gov.au//aviatio/origins-australian-icon
19.01.2022 On this day in 1932, a crowd converged in Lorne to celebrate the opening of the newly completed Great Ocean Road. Over a 13-year construction period, 3000 ret...urned servicemen built the road, largely by pick, shovel and barrow. Now a popular road trip for Victorian locals and visitors alike, the 'greatness' of the Great Ocean Road has never diminished. 12.01.2022 On this day, 1st December 1876, Aboriginal stockman Sam Isaacs and teenager Grace Bussell rescue about 40 people from a stricken steamship off Western Australia.... The SS Georgette was a steamship built in 1872, which was sold in England to Western Australia, and used as a coastal trading and passenger service between Fremantle, Albany and Champion Bay. On 1 December 1876, the Georgette sprang a leak 32km out to sea, whilst carrying fifty passengers and a cargo of jarrah wood. The pumps failed to work, and despite passengers and crew bailing water non-stop, by 6pm the water had risen to put out the steamship's fires, leaving the ship adrift. A boatload of passengers was lowered into the sea but the lifeboat was smashed against the ship's side and broken. Some of the survivors were rescued by a second lifeboat, but twelve were killed. Each lifeboat that was released was swamped or capsized in the storm-driven seas. As the stricken Georgette drifted into Calgardup Bay, it was seen by the Bussell family's Aboriginal stockman, Sam Isaacs. He and sixteen-year-old Grace Bussell raced down to the surf on horseback, and Grace then rode her horse into the bay until it was alongside one of the swamped lifeboats. People clung to her and her horse as she returned to shore and landed them. One man was left on the boat, and Isaacs was sent to collect him. Bussell and Isaacs continued their rescuing efforts, taking over four hours to land all the passengers. For their acts of bravery and heroism, Grace was awarded the Royal Humane Society's silver medal and Isaacs received a bronze. The wreck of the Georgette still lies about 90 metres off Calgardup Beach. Pictured courtesy: All Down Under Australia #australianhistory #westernaustralia #sharinghistory
