Movement: east at 17 kilometres per hour. Severe tropical cyclone Owen is expected to strengthen as it tracks in an eastwards direction towards the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Owen is forecast to intensify to a category 4 system prior to making landfall about the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria coast, between Gilbert River Mouth and Pormpuraaw, tonight or during Saturday morning. Hazards: VERY DESTRUCTIVE WINDS with gusts to 200 kilometres per hour are possible right near the centre. Based on the current forecast track, these VERY DESTRUCTIVE WINDS may develop between Gilbert River Mouth and Pormpuraaw tonight or during Saturday morning. It is possible that they could also develop about the northern coast of Mornington Island later today if the system takes a more southerly track. DESTRUCTIVE WINDS with gusts to 150 kilometres per hour are likely near the centre and these may develop about Mornington Island later today if the system takes a more southerly track than forecast. These DESTRUCTIVE WINDS are expected to develop about the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria coast between the area north of Karumba and Cape Keerweer as the system approaches the Queensland coast tonight or during Saturday morning. GALES with gusts up to 120 kilometres per hour have may occur about the southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast, between the NT/Qld border and Mornington Island (Qld), during today. As the cyclone crosses/approaches the coast, a storm tide is expected between the NT/Qld border and Aurukun. Large waves may produce minor flooding along the foreshore. People living in areas likely to be affected by this flooding should take measures to protect their property as much as possible and be prepared to help their neighbours.
