18.01.2022 Let the rendering begin. The render serves two main purposes. It keeps water out of the dome. It also preserves the bags underneath so that UV light doesn't cause the bags to disintegrate and the dome to collapse. . .... . . #8framehoney #earthbag #dome #earthbagdome #render #diy #hardwork #beehouse #beeshed See more

15.01.2022 There is so much going on here. The queen (who is so much easier to identify when she is marked - in this case a green dot) is moving about. There's female worker bees, male drones (the fatter bees), bees bringing in pollen, capped brood (which baby bees emerge from) and some capped honey yum! Beekeeping is a very rewarding hobby. We can teach you how to start on one of our 5hr beekeeping workshops. Head over to our website (link in our bio ) for more information. . .... . . #8framehoney #beesofinstagram #bees #queen #backyardbeekeeping #beekeepingcourse #beekeeper #rewarding #beevideo #insidethehive #honey See more

14.01.2022 The earthbag dome is getting higher! We will have to start filling the bags on the dome as it is too high to comfortably lift full bags up to the top of the walls now. We might have to adjust the internal doorframe buttress so it doesn't narrow the entrance quite so much. Our barbed wire holder also broke this week so we had to improvise a new one. Otherwise it is all going to plan.... . . . . #8framehoney #earthbagdome #earthbag #dome #beeshed #diy #goingup #hardwork #handmade See more

14.01.2022 A solid capped brood pattern. Capped brood is the final stage before a baby bee emerges. They chew through the cell capping and then join the colony. Baby bees are quite furry too. A single frame can contain 9000 eggs - which will eventually become capped brood and then bees! . .... . . #8framehoney #bees #brood #backyardbeekeeping #beekeeper #beekeeping See more

10.01.2022 If you are a beekeeper who has bees within a few kilometres of Sutton village you need to monitor your hives very closely. Walk past your hives daily for the next two weeks. You are watching to see if you are experiencing large numbers of bees dying. If you see piles of dead bees outside your hive entrance there is a fair chance your bees have been foraging on poisoned flowers. @yassvalleycouncil were spraying a broadleaf herbicide on the capeweed in full bloom in Sutton on 2...9/9/20. Beekeepers experienced an awful year last year with the drought, bushfires and smoke. We are shaping up for a much better season BUT PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't spray chemicals on weeds with flowers on them! . . . . #8framehoney #savethebees #sutton #suttonvillage #yassvalleycouncil #dontpoisonflowers #poorform #supportbeekeepers #bees

09.01.2022 Ghost bees! Under the new biosecurity rules in New South Wales beekeepers need to check for mites at least twice a year. One method allowed is a sugar shake test. While being rolled in icing sugar for several minutes makes the bees rather testy it doesn't kill them. When they are released they are coated in icing sugar giving them a ghost-like appearance. The rest of the colony help clean the icing sugar from the ghost bees We all need to be responsible beekeepers and follow ...the biosecurity code. NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) has links to the code on their website. . . . . #8framehoney #bees #backyardbeekeeping #beekeeper #sugar #sugarshake #responsible #followthecode #protectourindustry See more

07.01.2022 Liz and Alex teaching some local volunteers how to build earthbag water tanks. Their tank designs have withstood cyclones in Vanuatu - leaving them as the only clean source of water available in the town. With covid, they have turned their attention to Australia. These tanks could be an inexpensive way of creating fire resistant water tanks for bushfire prone areas. We haven't had a chance to work on our dome recently. We are hoping to give you another update this week. Stay ...tuned! . . . . #8framehoney #earthbag #water #tank #watertank #volunteer #community #spirit #workingtogether See more

07.01.2022 Capeweed. One person's weed is another bee's food resource. Check out her face full of pollen and big orange pollen pants! Weeds can be a valuable source of nectar and pollen for bees. If you must spray your weeds to kill them please never spray weeds that are flowering. Even tiny amounts of herbicides on flowers that bees visit can kill an entire colony of bees.... . . . . #8framehoney #beesofinstagram #weed #capeweed #nofilter #theabkmag #savethebees #backyardbeekeeping #beekeeper See more
