23.01.2022 Thanks Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef and Aroona Luxury Boat Charters Cairns Australia for a fantastic trip to the far North #greatbarrierreef. We experienced healthy reefs with lots of sharks and abundant marine life. Thanks Nicole, Jess, Catherine,, PhlipVids, Jenn, Tom, Ross, Chris for a succesfull collaborative #citizenscience effort, taking photos for the #GreatReefCensus, Coral Reef Habitat Mapping project / Allen Coral Atlas, and collecting CoralWatch data. Easy ...to combine in one dive. Take landscape photos the #GreatReefCensus while swimming around and conduct your CoralWatch survey at the end, during your safety stop at 5 meter. 18.01.2022 Happy Thursday everybody, it is Monique here! Please join me in thanking our ‘Film Colourist’, Justin McDonald, with a ‘like’ or a ’thank you’ in the comments for once again generously donating his time and expertise pro-bono to help us help the reef. What is a colourist I hear you ask? Well it’s exactly as it sounds. Juzzy is the person who can control the colour of the footage in post production. A bit like what you can do on your phone when you ‘Edit’ a photo - although a ...lot more advanced and controllable. Why would we want to change the colour I hear you ask? Well in this case we didn’t want to. We’ll leave that for the tourism and other commercial entity ads ha ha. We wanted it to look as authentic and true to life as possible. But with the high quality digital cameras Damien and Jellan were shooting with, all the footage is captured in what is technically referred to as ‘Raw Format’. This means all the visual information is there but it looks really bland and ugly. It needs someone with Juzzy’s skill to make that happen. So there you go, a little bit of a sneak peek behind the production curtain to see how they do it! And Juzzy, thank you so much for joining our watch! If you are reading this and want to know how you can help watch out for the reef, in the water or from home, visit www.coralwatch.org, share this post, ‘LIKE' us on Facebook and invite your friends to like us too! 17.01.2022 Coral spawning...

16.01.2022 It is that time of the year....coral spawning. Did you know that Giant Clams spawn too, just like a coral. On the Great Barrier Reef, only once a year around November/December at night a few days after the full moon corals, giant clams and other creatures reproduce. Coral spawning involves the release of eggs and sperm simultaneously into the water column. Sperm needs to find the egg in the water column to fertilize it and become a larvae. A different reproduction method is brooding which occurs when spawned sperm fertilizes the eggs within the coral polyp. This way, the larvae is released into the water when they are relatively well developed.

14.01.2022 An international team of scientists have used CRISPR-Cas technology to identify a gene responsible for heat tolerance in a coral on the Great Barrier Reef. Like... a pair of genetic scissors, the team used the gene editing technology in coral larvae, effectively turning it off and confirming its role in how corals respond to warm water. The study paves the way for new genetic tools and knowledge for coral which would support their management and conservation in the future. Read more: bit.ly/2UcpGMs
