18.01.2022 New Years Day and fire in Happy Valley. Air Support brigade is filling 4 aircraft that are bombing the fire.

15.01.2022 A lot can happen in 24 hours in Cherry Gardens. Just after 4pm on Sunday 24th the fire on Hicks Hill road started with a couple of ignition points which is very suspicious. While responding to this fire there are multiple outbreaks around the district including Ironbank and Scott Creek. While some of these fire were brought under control quickly unfortunately the Scott Creek outbreak got out of control very quickly and escalated into a huge bushfire that has burnt out most of... the Scott Creek Conservation Park and destroyed so much of our local bushland. The CFS responded with a massive turnout of resources and volunteers from many groups as well as SAPOL and MFS to try to protect peoples homes. While many properties were saved unfortunately at least 2 homes were lost and many out building and vehicles. The CFS Region One Air Support (Cherry Gardens airstrip) kept the bombers filled and they did their best to protect the properties and to support the ground crews to contain the fire. A grateful community to all who helped and in particular to our local CFS volunteers including the Air Support group. A few photos from various people. See more

06.01.2022 From the ABC Adelaide comes this amazing pre Christmas story: Amanda was surprised with a special gift on her Christmas tree yesterday finding this koala in her... Coromandel Valley home. Koala rescuers thought initially it was a prank call, but no, a koala desperate to get in the Christmas spirit had wandered into Amanda McCormick’s house and decided it wanted to be the fairy on the Christmas tree Thanks Amanda for the great pictures and making sure this little koala got its wish, even if it was just for a short while : Amanda McCormick via 1300Koalaz See more

02.01.2022 Fire and Emergency Services Regulations strengthened to lessen the risk of ignitions: Several amendments will be introduced in the Fire and Emergency Services R...egulations from 1 March 2021 to help reduce the risk of bushfires in South Australia. The Fire and Emergency Service Regulations 2005 is the legislation that regulates the responsibilities of the Country Fire Service, and the restrictions and conditions that are enforceable during the Fire Danger Season and Total Fire Bans, CFS Director of Preparedness Brett Loughlin said. Amendments to the Regulations will provide greater details in the definitions of equipment that can and cannot be used during Total Fire Bans and conditions in which they can be operated under. We will see the size of minimum clear spaces required to operate hot tools, such as grinders and oxy cutters, extended from 4 metres to 10 metres, Mr Loughlin said. This will further help to reduce the risk of fires starting from sparks or hot metals emanating from hot tools. Such tools may still be used within fully enclosed structures. We have also listened to the concerns of the construction industry and have further refined the definition of cutting tools to better reflect the actual risks associated with carrying out certain activities, Mr Loughlin said. Apart from changes to hot tool usage, initial expiation notice fees will also increase from $315 to $473 for people found not adhering to Fire Danger Season restrictions. Several parts of South Australia have been ravaged by bushfires in the past two years and although some of the larger fires were not preventable, many fires were. The amendments to the Regulations will further help the CFS, South Australian Police and Local Government Fire Prevention Officers curb irresponsible behaviour during our most dangerous times of the year, and in turn lessen the risk of fires starting when they are most difficult to control, Mr Loughlin said. The SA Fire and Emergency Services Regulations 2021 document can be found here - https://www.legislation.sa.gov.au//Fire%20and%20Emergency%

01.01.2022 Some of you may have supported the Cherry Chatter in a petition we put to the State Government last year to seek permission to use the CFS Siren in the event of any fire that may be threatening our community. We had to do this on behalf of the community and the Cherry Gardens CFS as the CFS headquarters had instructed the brigade to NOT use the siren under any circumstances. So we are very pleased to let you know that on Sunday the siren was sounded to warn locals of the fire...s and we hope that it alerted you in time to responded to the threat posed. We received a letter from the Minister responsible for the CFS and although this came just after the fires we were advised by Steve Murray that the letter was coming. You can read a copy of the letter. Let us know if you heard the siren and whether this gave some comfort. The siren will only be sounded if there is a direct and present danger to the Cherry Gardens district from a bushfire and will not be used for car accidents, tree's down or other CFS turn outs. You should not count on the siren under all situations and try to stay informed by all other means such as the 891 Radio Adelaide, Alert SA phone APP, other social media and CFS website particularly on high fire danger and fire ban days. Anyway it is good to have successfully petitioned the government to give us our siren back! Well done everyone who supported us. See more
