25.01.2022 WestMAC Wednesday Wonders The famous WestMAC war cry was heard for kilometres around our Karrabin campus after Middle School robustly tested out the chant, as well as exercising their vocal chords, yesterday morning. It was also Year 7's first time taking part in the memorable experience. Here is the excitement and energy of the moment captured on video.....

25.01.2022 Congratulations to WestMAC Year 12 cohort, including College Captain and dux Rupert Lupton, Academic Captain Damian Bellew and Music Captain Carl Flottmann, and community for making The Sunday Mail coverage after impressive ATAR results, well done after all the hard work.

24.01.2022 The Uniform Shop is open tomorrow, Friday 2 October for last minute purchases before the start of Term 4. Although parents/carers/visitors cannot go to classrooms, they are still able to come to the Uniform Shop if they park near the shop, and do not walk past any other buildings. Under the current social distancing requirements, only one family will be allowed in to use the fitting rooms at a time. This could result in a long wait if a lot of customers come at the same time.... To reduce contact and this waiting time, it is recommended that customers order and pay for uniforms by Flexischool, phone or email if possible. The orders can be: - collected from the Uniform Shop - collected from sub-school receptions - delivered to students in Prep to Year 6 Contact Details Phone: (07) 3813 4533 Fax: (07) 3813 4566 https://www.wmac.com.au/community/uniform-shop

Students were joined by members of the Community Club and our Principal Mr McLay.

23.01.2022 The College has a wonderful piece of news to share about one of our WestMAC alumni. Sophie Salvesani graduated in 2011. She has been doing some wonderful things with Opera Australia. Sophie was this week named as the recipient of the Australian Opera Awards Committee Dame Joan Sutherland Award. The Award includes a significant scholarship. The Awards Committee consists of professional volunteers. ... The committee has raised and awarded millions of dollars to support Opera in Australia. Previous recipients include of this award include Anthony Warlow, Daniel Sumegi, John Antoniou, Maria Pollicina to name a few. The award has brought Sophie much happiness and hope for the future and what it now could hold for her singing career. Well done Sophie from everyone at WestMAC.

23.01.2022 Well done to all our athletes who performed superbly at yesterdays TAS Athletics carnival and a special congratulations to our Intermediate Boys who were crowned TAS champions!

22.01.2022 Please send a warm congratulations to WestMAC's Public Speaking and Debating captain Margaret Hayes, who won last week's Rosewood Lion's Youth of the Year Competition, and also send best wishes when she competes in the regional competition finals at Boonah, on Saturday, 13 March. Here is Margaret's report: Lions Youth of the Year is a prestigious public speaking competition, where students from around Australia display their abilities as the next generation of leaders and... thinkers. Each competitor must complete an interview with the judges, a general knowledge quiz and two public speaking rounds. The first public speaking competition requires students to present two two-minute impromptu speeches about any topic chosen by the judges. Then students complete their 5-minute prepared speech. This year WestMAC had two students compete in the local Rosewood Lion's Youth of the Year Competition - Academic captain Timothy Prochon and Paterson House Captain Margaret Hayes, also Public Speaking & Debating captain. Our students' interviews were completed on 15th of February and the speeches on the 17th at Rosewood Primary School. Both students displayed tremendous amount of courage and composure as their impromptu speeches on the topics of Juvenile Crime and Natural Disasters were well-thought out and convincing. Tim's 5-minute prepared speech was engaging and informative as he discussed a topic, he is very passionate about. Tim's speech on space exploration and the benefits investing in space can have for Australians was a new perspective with intriguing and thought-provoking arguments. Margaret's 5-minute prepared speech was on the 'Change the Date' debate about our Nation's past, present, and future, focusing on First Australians. After a well-fought night against the Faith Lutheran College Captain and Faith Lutheran Academic Captain, the overall winner was Margaret Hayes. Congratulations to all competitors within this challenging but amazing opportunity!

22.01.2022 A reminder to send in those dad photos today for our special online event tomorrow!

22.01.2022 After analysing early results from some of our Year 12 students, we send congratulations to WestMAC School Captain Rupert Lupton (99.80) and Academic Captain Damian Bellew (99.65), who achieved amongst the very top results in the State. Also, congratulations to Henry Bischoff (98.90) and Carl Flottmann (98.65) for their exceptional results. We are still waiting for other results, but we want to celebrate Rupert, Damian, Henry, and Carl’s achievements. Rupert said it took a... few seconds for the results to sink in when they came through at around 8.30am today. I saw my results and for 30 seconds I couldn’t believe they were real. I’m very happy now and excited. This result has widened my university options and has given me the opportunity to follow any pathway I would choose.’’ Rupert’s best external exam result was 48/50 for Physics. At WestMAC, I’ve had people to support and encourage me and to keep pushing me. They have believed in me and have given me different opportunities. I have developed self-discipline and an intrinsic motivation to keep going. My approach to study is not to go it alone, it felt we were part of a team. We focused on collaboration rather than rivalry.’’ Damian achieved 100 percent in his external exam for English, which traditionally was his weakest subject. The English was a hard exam, so I’m very proud and shocked I did so well,’’ said Damian, who put in extra English study before the exam. Damian, who achieved 48/50 for his external Physics exam, has achieved the requirements for entry to his first preference which is double degree in Bachelor of Maths and Engineering at University of Queensland. I needed a 94 for my university course so I was blown away to achieve a 99.65. I honestly never thought anything like this would happen. It was about the environment you surround yourself with and constantly working hard to do the best you can. Teachers inspired and supported me, creating so many resources and giving me the best opportunity of success. We wouldn’t have achieved what we did if we didn’t have each other there (Rupert, Carl, Henry and Year 12 cohort) to push each other, the support, and the friendly competition would motivate us to work harder to solve the hard problems. We were determined not to leave a stone unturned.’’ Stay tuned for more WestMAC results.

19.01.2022 Tentative results for this year’s Year 12 cohort are impressive, especially considering this year’s new ATAR system and COVID-19 restrictions. Of the 99 WestMAC students whose ATAR results were made available to the school, 29 students achieved a result of 90 or greater. This means about 29 percent of Year 12 students received a result of 90 or above. And 45 students of the 99 (45 percent) achieved a result of 85 which is an incredible result for all involved in the WestMAC c...Continue reading

19.01.2022 The College's Year 12 Valedictory was a magical evening last night, held at the College's Chapel and OTT area for the first time. 19.01.2022 WestMAC Wednesday Wonders WestMAC College's International Office and Languages Department kindly hosted a Chinese New Year luncheon last Friday, 12 February, on The Green. About 50 students attended, including international students, senior language students and 23 International Student Ambassadors, who received the support of Principal Geoff McLay, Deputy Principal Janelle Lecinski and several staff members.... The Lunar New Year commenced on 12 February. This year is the Year of the Metal Ox and celebrations continue for ten days. Because of travel restrictions, our 14 international students have been unable to go home for the holidays. Chinese New Year is an important cultural festival that is equivalent to Western Christmas and New Year. Businesses close, families travel to be together and children receive red envelopes. The WestMAC community wished to acknowledge this important event, especially as this was the second time our students had missed celebrating with their families. As a token gesture, each international student was gifted a red envelope, containing a tuckshop voucher. Special food was provided and our dragon was unearthed from the depths!! Students enjoyed dumplings, spring rolls, chicken, fruit and juice. Report assistance from Anne Shaw, WestMAC College Director of International Students' Program

13.01.2022 10-year Alumni Reunion Event Postponed It is with much regret that the College has made a decision to postpone this event, taking into account the impact of the recent re-introduction of the Queensland Governments COVID-safe requirements on venues and events, particularly with relation to serving food and beverages. The strict serving requirements, and the necessity to have guests seated during service, greatly restricts mingling and consequently creates a more formal vibe... to the event which is not conducive to the socially inclusive nature that all of our previous reunions have provided. In addition, there were several alumni living interstate who were unable to attend due to the current travel restrictions affecting parts of the country. We are very disappointed that this decision has had to be taken. The College genuinely values the opportunities to reconnect with alumni and therefore looks forward to welcoming the Class of 2010 back to WestMAC to celebrate this important 10 year milestone at a later date. Realistically we will be looking at 2021 and we will ensure we provide you with ample notice of a revised date. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause to those of you who were planning to join us. However, we look forward to reinstating the reunion for the Class of 2010 at the earliest opportunity and I look forward to seeing you all then.

09.01.2022 Middle School Sports all-rounder Stefan Brits is WestMAC's latest Queensland Times star after he claimed a six-wicket haul in Intermediate First XI's win against Ormiston last weekend at home. The Senior First XI continued their hot streak with a comfortable 56-run victory on WestMAC’s Main Oval. On a wicket with variable bounce, WestMAC finished their 50 over innings with a respectful 5/220. An opening stand of 73 between Caleb Doyle (35) and Zachary Fisher (46) laid the p...latform. This allowed Fletcher Madden to bat with freedom and top scored with an attacking 67 off just 72 balls. In response, Ormiston’s opening batsmen showed some resistance before some great bowling had the visitors reeling at 8/113. Ormiston’s tail wagged before eventually being bowled out for 164 in the 46th over. The pick of the bowlers for WestMAC was Emmanuel O’Hara (2/16), Caleb Doyle (2/15), Joshua Boyle (1/16) and Samuel Perrett (1/18). The Intermediate First XI also tasted success with a tight win over Ormiston. Defending just 105, the opening trio of Harvey Lockhart (1/10), Joshua Hines (1/12) and Stefan Brits (6/9) ensured a tough run chase. WestMAC Head of Cricket Rob Hillier said young quick Stefan Brits was simply outstanding with the ball, bowling full and straight for a match-changing stint. With Ormiston in a favourable position at 7/94, the State Javelin representative came back on and took the remaining 3 wickets in his last over to ensure a 10 run victory to WestMAC. It was one of the best spells of fast bowling I have seen in Intermediate TAS Cricket. Those are the moments any young bowler dreams of,’’ Mr Hillier said. To be thrown the ball when the game is on the line and bowl with pace and accuracy is pretty special. Hopefully this success kick starts things for Stefan and he can go on and take many more wickets this season.’’ Mr Hillier said both teams looked forward to their clash against St John’s Anglican College, Forest Lake, this weekend.

This tied in perfectly with the focus of this term giving back to the local community and creating a lens of gratitude. Here are some of their designs. The 2020 Year 12s were all presented with their own "Class of '20" badges by College staff. Students will be able to wear these badges on their ties for their final term as WestMAC students. The College wishes them all the very best for their upcoming external exams.

02.01.2022 The College proudly welcomes a film crew from Channel 10’s The Project today. The crew will film our remarkable Dell Rathbone who was awarded The Betty Watts Award for the Most Outstanding Contribution to Teaching in the 2020 TEACHX awards. Dell’s brilliant career spans 62 years and her astonishing achievements and dedication to three generations of Queensland students has drawn commendation and interest from multiple media including The Courier Mail, The Queensland Times, ABC Breakfast Radio and now Network Ten’s The Project. We congratulate Dell and look forward to sharing her story with Australia!

02.01.2022 A wonderful new WestMAC tradition began this morning as current College Captains Rupert Lupton and Jennifer Hoare presented the Year 11 cohort with special "class of 21" senior badges. The badges signify a "passing of the baton" moment as the current Year 12s begin the final 8 weeks of their schooling journey as Term 3 finishes and Term 4 commences. The "21" badges will be worn on the ties of the Year 11 cohort for the remainder of this year as well as next year to signify their leadership and their moment as College Seniors. It is anticipated this will become an annual tradition as each Year 12 cohort "passes the baton" to the next through the presentation of these badges. A wonderful initiative from our current College Captains.

Students even got to make and keep their very own UV light detector.
