25.01.2022 Team member - Ross Muir has accepted the challenge of eating a Balut - a Philippines delicacy - during the GVE. The challenge was thrown down by District 3780 GVE team member Michael Torres, who also provided some handy tips; 1. Use lots of salt & 2. Use lots of San Miguel! 'Balut (/blu/ b-LOOT, /blu/ BAH-loot;[1] also spelled as balot) is a developing bird embryo (usually a duck) that is boiled and eaten from the shell. It originated from and is commonly sold as street food in the Philippines. Often served with beer, balut is popular in Southeast Asian countries'

23.01.2022 PROGRESS TOWARDS THE MALARIA VACCINE, PlasProtecT Eight years ago, Professor Michael Good and his team set a goal of developing a whole parasite vaccine and tes...ting it in human volunteers. This vision was derived from experiments they had published previously in which volunteers could be infected with a low dose of live parasites and treated before they became sick. They subsequently developed a potent immune response to malaria and there was a suggestion that they were protected from malaria. Using this principle, a plan was developed for making a vaccine by using a drug that would attenuate (or anaesthetise) the parasites. Dr Danielle Stanisic (seen here with Professor Michael Good) was then charged with the important task of preparing for human studies. One of her initial important goals was to prepare a bank of cultured parasites that were suitable (safe) for inoculation into volunteers. November saw the publication of there first human pilot trial of the vaccine, in which volunteers were administered a single dose of vaccine to assess safety and immunogenicity. They were very pleased to observe that the vaccine was safe and that all volunteers developed an immune response (primarily of T cells). This work was published in the prestigious British journal, BMC Medicine. Professor Good and Dr Stanisic have now commenced the first of the human trials of the 3-dose vaccine, which has been trademarked as PlasProtecT. After receiving the vaccine, volunteers will be given a live malaria infection to determine whether they are protected. In Summary, their research, with the great help and input of Rotary is progressing up to their expectations. The recent BMC Medicine paper was a watershed moment as it represents the very first study of a whole parasite vaccine in human volunteers anywhere in the world. Professor Michael F. Rotarians in the host area provide for meals, lodging, and group travel within their district. ABOUT THE SONG (MANILA - Hit song in 1976) "Manila" is a song by Filipino band Hotdog. The song is written about love for the Philippine capital. It tells about a man who misses Manila while living in another country for years. The upbeat song was inspired by Tony Bennett's hit single, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco". It topped the radio charts in 1984. It centers on the story of the narrator who left the Philippine for a foreign country to work and became homesick after living out for long. The narrator then tells of his many adventures outside the country. Some lyrics reference the United States and Australia. "I walked the streets of San Francisco" references his daily life overseas. "I've tried the rides in Disneyland" tells of his love of visiting places of interest such as natural spots, amusement and theme parks. His friendship with foreigners and different nationalities as well as his fellow Filipinos overseas is referred in "dated a million girls in Sydney". The narrator then says that despite his love for his overseas life, he couldn't get much satisfaction and enjoyment from it through the part "somehow I feel that I don't belong", eventually realizing that the Philippines can only give him the best satisfaction and enjoyment, which starts in "Hinahanap-hanap kita Manila". His desire to come back and stay in the Philippines and its capital for good begins in the lyrics "Take me back in your arms Manila", "Promise me you'll never let go", and "I'm coming home to stay". In the 70's, during the Martial Law era, the Manila sound genre was getting to a successful peak. That was when the Hotdogs formed with Ella Del Rosario as lead vocals, Rene Garcia on vocals/lead guitarist, Ramon "Mon" Torralba as 2nd lead guitarist, Tito Del Rosario on 3rd lead guitar, Dennis Garcia on bass guitar, Lorrie Ilustre on keyboards with Jess Garcia and Roy Diaz de Rivera as drummers and backing vocalists. After hearing Tony Bennett's hit single, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" and Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York" on radio during one of their daily routines, Garcia brothers, Rene and Dennis, found out that the Philippine capital, Manila should have a song of its own. Dennis Garcia, Hotdogs original bassist and main songwriter, has said in an interview that "the band considers the song as the mother of all Hotdog hits. He added saying that he and his brother Rene "felt our favorite city should also have an anthem of its own, a tune that will last forever. Looks like we got ourselves a self-fulfilling wish.
