10.01.2022 This has been a beautiful transformation for a very beautiful client. Consisting of trimming a lot of overgrown plants, pulling out some trees, pulling out most of the long narrow driveway of ground covers and weeds and refreshing with some mulch and finishing up with cleaning the exposed concrete on the patio

07.01.2022 Feeding Fruit trees in late winter: If you haven’t already you need to feed all of your fruit trees now. This is the most important feed of the year for them in... my opinion and one that a lot of people miss. Fruit trees particularly deciduous ones have been dormant over winter and as the daylight hours increase and the soil slowly warms up it triggers the tree into running sap flow and enzymes to the buds that swell and flower. Fruit trees work hard at this time year producing blossoms and leaves simultaneously and can do with some help to set them up for a good fruiting season. This also applies to citrus and your evergreen fruit trees as well. Feeding fruit tree sounds easy but I should point out a couple of things so that we are all on the same page. Fruit trees feed from feeder roots that grow out from larger anchor roots and are quite fine and fibrous start about 20-30mm below the surface and they grow out to the edge of their canopy or drip line. They do this so that leaves and particularly fruit that may fall from them eventually rots down and provides some nourishment for them in their natural habitats. In our backyards or orchards we gather up fruit and some of the leaves depending on what sort of trees they are so as to not infect them with things like brown rot, curly leaf and whole host of other things we don’t want on our trees. So we actually inadvertently take away some of their nourishment so It is important to supplement them when they need it. So when feeding your fruit trees don’t be tempted to put it around the trunk or base, any food you apply needs to go around the drip line of the tree where they feed from to get the maximum benefit of what you feed them. In large pots this also applies, in smaller pots it doesn’t matter at all. If they are espaliers yes they too have a drip line and it is directly under their canopy. So what to feed them? I make a mix of the following things and this is why. 1. The first thing I think about is I wont my fruit trees to have a good flourish of strong blooms, so I get out some suphlate of potash (wood ash sifted is also ok)as part of the mix, and as per the directions on the packet, in the case of using just ash about 1 x handful per square metre of application. This encourages good strong blossoms and healthy strong fruit. 2. Next thing to think about it building healthy fruit stems, its is one thing to produce them but it is another to stop a lot of fruit drop, so I use a small amount of either dolomite lime, or a liquid form of dolomite (eco -flow Dolomite) this adds a soluble form of calcium into the soil to help built strong fruit stems on your trees, that way you limit fruit drop and you get to thin the fruit instead of the tree dropping it on you. 3. Last but not least you need to apply a well balanced organic fertiliser like a pelletised manure , or Giganic by Neutrog, or what ever you feel works for you. This will nourish your trees for the leaves and growth they will put on in the coming few months. Feeding citrus trees you will need to obtain a citrus specific fertiliser for them as their requirements are different from other fruit trees, but should also be supplemented with items, 1 & 2, and a feed of trace minerals generally in late winter when they are looking a little yellow or showing signs of deficiency. I hope this gives you a little insight into feeding your fruit trees, and by the way this is the biggest feed I apply to them, I only use the pelletised manure type fertiliser at the change of each season from there on until the next Late winter!
