22.01.2022 Here’s a project we’ve been working on for a while I’ve always been keen to step outside my comfort zone. This is the first time I’ve had a crack at an electric powered vehicle. The car has been completed and the customer has been driving it around for a few months, he couldn’t be happier with the result. The vehicle is a VW buggy built from a ‘72 Beetle floorpan. The engine removed was a 2 litre Pancake motor from a Type 2 bus married to the beetle gearbox. The decision wa...s made to retain the gearbox with the new electric motor and just have the driveline clutchless, this works beautifully. I started with a Hyper9 electric motor from NetGain, it is a 130volt system which can deliver a peak output of approx 115kw and 235Nm of torque. Batteries are 3.2V nominal 100Ah cells from Winston Batteries, there are 37 cells in series split into 2 packs, one in the front where the original fuel tank was and another in the rear luggage storage area. Battery monitoring is taken care of by a Batrium BMS, this runs 37 cellmons daisy-chained together to a Blockmon control module. The Blockmon outputs data wirelessly to a Windows based tablet to allow monitoring to the driver. There is an onboard charger connected to a Euro Type 2 charge port mounted where the fuel cap was originally housed. The car has been wired to either charge from a 240V 20A household GPO or it can be charged from a public charge station. A cooling system has been added to the motor controller to keep the temperature of the controller down. The car has an approximate driving range of 60-70km at 60-80km/h. I haven’t used the available regeneration feature in the controller due to; A/ the owner only using the vehicle for quite short journeys therefore not needing the extra backup power and B/ the load on the motor on deceleration making it difficult to change gears due to no clutch and relying on rev-matching the gear changes. I corner weighted the car before I pulled it apart and then again once it was completed. I tried to keep the balance of the vehicle roughly the same with a little more weight in the front as they are quite light in the front end normally. Once completed the car only gained approximately 80kgs, 50kgs in the front and 30kgs in the rear. The car is fully engineered, registered and legal in Queensland. Engineering approval was done by Tim Bartrop at Dr Tim’s Auto Engineering. The car is a blast to drive and it puts a smile on my face every time I drive it, unfortunately I had to hand it back to the owner though!! Huge thanks to Matt at Fiv3 Custom Metal for all your help with the CAD files to fabricate the adaptor and drive flanges. Awesome help & service from Noosa Metal Fabrication / Keystone Engineering machining all the parts. Thanks to Josh & Tommy at Noosa Custom Alloy for all your help on the battery boxes. #electricbuggy #vwbuggy #netgain #evbuggy
