23.01.2022 We can do this team! Stay strong AF

20.01.2022 FOCUS Focus is something I’ve always struggled with, whether it be at school or in my training. Those of you who know me, know I’m a very organised person, who lives things to be in order. However, I’m also one of those people who trots out the phrase diamonds are made under pressure cause I like to leave things to the last minute. If I don’t have a timeline to follow, I’m screwed. I find the key to remaining focused is to have everything written down, and time alloca...ted. For example; I have currently been training for a new job. When I first applied back in March last year, I knew the requirements I had to meet, BUT I didn’t know when I was going to have to meet them by (thanks defence). So I began my training, and was going really well, but found it hard to stay motivated abs focused without an end point. Then, when I found out when my assessment was going to be, I found my focus increased, and therefore my performance increased. This is also important during lockdown. Don’t let these 5 days negatively affect all your hard work. Remain focused, keep chipping away at your goal. Even if that means using a backpack full of water bottles to get your weights training in. You can do this! So, my suggestion to you is to write your goals/ambitions/tasks down and give them an end point, so you know you must have them completed by that time/date. This will hopefully help you stay more focused and motivated towards achieving it. #focus #motivation #goals #organisation #healthandfitness #stayfocussed #staymotivated

19.01.2022 PERSONALISED TRAINING So, you keep seeing me - and other coaches - posting about personalised training programs. But why do you need a personalised training program, what’s wrong with a general program? The aim of a personalised program is for you to work on YOUR strengths and weaknesses, and to reach YOUR goals. ... When a client comes to me enquiring about a training program, the first thing we do is sit down and have a chat. In this chat, we cover lots of things from what you do for work, to your hobbies, family/life commitments to training ability/experience and goals. This chat gives me an overview of what you are looking to get out of your training, and let’s me advise you on what I think I can help you with. This chat is the foundation I use to begin building your program. For example; if you tell me you are a netball goal shooter who is struggling to get up for rebounds in games, I will tailor your program to work on your jumping ability, focusing on lower limb strength and plyometrics. Generalised programs (often mass produced, impersonal and one off programs) are great if your after a bit of variability in your training, but they can be unsustainable, because you may not be seeing the results you are after, and that can therefore leave you unmotivated. Personalised programs that are tailored to your goals, help keep your motivated and driven, as you begin to see improvements in your training and your performance, encouraging you to continue and keep reaping the benefits. So, is there something you’re looking to improve? Are you ready to kick your training up a notch with a personalised program? 04.01.2022 AM I PLATEAUING? Okay, you’ve been hitting the gym or the pavement for a while now, and initially, you saw some change. But now, you aren’t noticing any improvement and you feel like your fitness isn’t budging. An explanation for this could be that you’ve hit a plateau in your training. This means, your body has adapted to this level of training, and therefore, is no longer challenged by it. To continue reaping benefits and adaptations from exercising, we must adjust our ...training. These adjustments don’t have to be much; it can be as little as changing the tempo (how fast/slow) we perform an exercise, or completing a variation of an exercise to target the muscles differently. For example: If you have been performing a split squat in your workout routine, we can change this to a Bulgarian split squat, where the rear foot is elevated, placing further load through the grounded leg (quadricep and glute). It has been shown that it takes between 4 weeks for adaptations to begin being notice/felt, and after 4-6 weeks, we should be progressing our workouts (progressive overload) to promote new and ongoing adaptations. So next time you feel like you’re plateauing, ask yourself, how long since I’ve adjusted my training routine? #progressiveoverload #trainingadaptations #pt #exercise #training #workout #plateau #whyamiplateauing #exercisescience #sportscience #exercisescientist #afleopold

01.01.2022 ARE YOU NEW TO THE GYM? Or maybe your getting back into the gym after a hiatus or moving to a new gym. How do you start to find your groove, and feel confident in the gym? 1. BELIEVE IN YOU! This is easier said then done, I know, but you need to tell yourself I can do this. Everyone starts in the same spot, and we are always learning. No one is a master at everything, and there is always something to learn in the gym, a new exercise, a new technique, a new piece of equi...pment. 2. USE YOUR RESOURCES: if you are unsure about a piece of equipment, or if you are doing something correctly, ask someone to help. Most gyms have a manager/PT who would be more than happy to give you some pointers, you just need to ask. Instagram and YouTube are also a great resources, just ensure that when you are looking at someone’s videos/advice, that they are a qualified professional (often stated in their bios). 3. HIRE A PT/COACH: lastly, if you feel as though you need a more personalised approach, or the steps above didn’t work, enquire about working with a professional. You’ll get one on one, detailed help with exactly what you need help with. The most important thing is that you give it a go, and stay active. Being active has so many positive benefits that increase our overall mood, health and quality of life. So what are you waiting for?
