Picture: MATT THOMPSON THE majority of Tasmanian homes screened for methamphetamine this year have returned a positive result. Since January, tests carried out by Meth Screen have discovered meth or ice residue in 70 per cent of the tested properties. A three-bedroom home on Hobarts Eastern Shore is just one recent example. It tested positive with a reading that was 150 times higher than Australian Government clandestine drug laboratory guideline levels (greater than 0.5 micrograms per 100cm is considered unacceptable). Meth Screen chief executive Ryan Matthews expects screening for meth residue to soon become the norm. He said it was safe and smart to screen a property for ice residue before it was leased to renters. Financially, it could save you thousands in the long run, Mr Matthews said. Decon Assist manages the decontamination process of homes if they have returned a positive test for the drug. Decon chief executive Nick Bredhauer said he was certain there were thousands of contaminated properties all over the state causing serious health issues for countless Tasmanians. He said it was impossible to know what went on behind closed doors or how a property was being used. If an owner, real estate agent or property manager comes across a property that is suspicious, I recommend it is screened for ice and methamphetamine residue before it is placed on the market or leased, Mr Bredhauer said. In extreme cases, decontamination can cost tens of thousands of dollars and require the removal of carpet, curtains and plasterboards. Furniture and soft furnishings may also need to be destroyed. Mr Bredhauer said in cases of mild contamination, a property may be decontaminated effectively and quickly. Meth Screen offers a range of screening services. A base composite screen for a one- to three-bedroom house costs about $300.
