22.01.2022 We are excited to announce the co-ownership of Chakana Blue Ironman. (aptly now known as Tony) Alpacas On The Hill have purchased a half share in this upstanding young Macho to further advance their foundation Suri herd. Congratulations John.... Ironman is an extremely well packaged Suri. He carries a superb, highly lustrous fleece on a true to type, well boned frame. AND he has a true gentle nature. His genetics are top class and need no introduction. Soon to be certified, watch this space as he matures and makes his mark!

22.01.2022 Chakana Blue Mayora. Pictured at three weeks old. A pristine white fleece! Already has quite a presence, just like her Mum.

19.01.2022 Late afternoon winters day at Chakana Blue. Boys just love to wrestle and its great exercise too Obi and Mach demonstrate their wrestling moves in this video. ... The older alpha male here, is coaching the younger male. Mach was born end of 2015 Obi, mid 2017. Note the really strong head and neck holds. The ability to drop, swivel and gain access to sensitive hamstrings and testes. A clear way to disable an opponent! If this was a serious fight it would include a whole heap of sound and blood. Males of any species will spar like this as valuable experience in case a situation arises where they should need to prove their dominance (usually always over a female) Adult males weigh in at around 70 kgs and with four legs can certainly manoeuvre with speed. Kept in male herds (of generally ten or more) the pecking order is good and the peace is generally kept by an alpha male. Male groups in small numbers is generally when difficulties can arise (and of coarse that is dependant on the particular alpacas personalities, which Ive discussed before) In the notes I will post a pic of the fighting teeth that Alpacas have. Purposefully designed for grip(facing back) and tearing ability. Obi shakes his head at the head and signals hes had enough. Grasshopper I have much love for you says Master Poe. See more

19.01.2022 Four white Hembras from Tahara have joined the herd here at Chakana Blue. We are hopeful these bloodlines will compliment our vision to adhere to the breed standard and utilise highly heritable fleece traits. Thank you Dianne, the girls are now shorn and settling in well.

18.01.2022 For those who are on smaller farms you will understand the importance of collecting up the manure and keeping your bio security in check by using a sensible rotation program. Good paddock maintenance means healthy stock We use a Greystone paddock vacuum which works very well. However, it has a design fault that means the hose and vacuum head have no place when travelling or storing. This often leads to the hose dragging or on occasion being run over. The replacement hose i...s not cheap, so heres our solution. Well done to my clever husband It makes an enormous difference! See more

12.01.2022 A note for new buyers. As an Alpaca breeder for 10 years, I’d like to outline some observations that are worth noting. 1/ Please do your homework- ... buying any animal requires a commitment from you to care for ALL the animals needs, for its lifetime. 2/ Shop around. -Same as retail shopping. Don’t be fooled, you know the old adage, 'If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is' 3/ Don’t be afraid to ask questions of breeders. -It is important that you cross reference with more than one breeder and check up, as best as you can, their reputation. 4/ The valuable knowledge coming from the farm where you eventually purchase from is actually worth more than the animal itself . -Get a feel for your mentor stud. If you get a bad vibe or see something that you don’t like (undernourished-sick animals, unsafe fencing/yards, feral/unhandled alpacas etc) go somewhere else it’s your prerogative. 6/Just because they are high profile breeders doesn’t mean they will rip you off! -Most studs understand the market for pets, lawnmowers and herd guards. If you are wanting good genetics and help with a breeding program, once again, do your homework. You can check what studs have been successful in the show ring on eAlpaca as a public guest or join the association for as little as $50 a year. Generally, if breeders don’t have what you are after, they will head you in the right direction. Pricing is always in accordance with the quality/age of the animal and the needs of the buyer. Everyone likes to think they are a reputable breeder but like all businesses there’ll always one that will take your money and not provide any after care and support. It’s not until you need the support that you realise how vital this step is in your purchase. I wish you luck on your journey into alpaca ownership. They are beautiful inquisitive animals. Don’t forget to check out the Australian Alpaca Association website. https://alpaca.asn.au/ And here for public show results and alpacas for sale https://www.ealpaca.com.au/ And you can contact me with questions anytime. 06.01.2022 Lets talk about Spit! Alpacas spit dont they? YES alpacas DO spit.... They are in the Camelid family and all Camelids spit. 1.Guanaco 2.Vicuña 3.Camels 4.Llama 5.Alpaca Now heres the thing; most all creatures have a defence mechanism. Dogs bite, horses kick, echidnas roll into a ball etc. People....hmmm a topic for another day Alpacas in general are docile flight animals. Ever heard the saying Eyes at the front, like to hunt. Eyes at the side, like to hide Alpacas are not hunters and will avoid confrontation when they can. Their only real threat here in Australia is dogs. Dogs, particularly in group packs, will chase alpacas into submission and ultimately do terrible damage, often fatal Within alpaca family herds, members will show dominance through spitting behaviour. Perhaps over close personal space or rivalry between males. On the shearing table alpacas spit due to the unknown and detesting the process. Perhaps a mother will spit at a Cria (baby alpaca) to teach herd etiquette. Spitting is also used by the female alpaca to deter the advances of a male. Amazingly Hembras (female alpaca) can tell if a pregnancy has taken from very early days. If she is not pregnant she will cush (alpacas way of sitting /laying down)in readiness to be mated by the Macho (male alpaca)but if she is already pregnant she will spit at him. There are indeed alpacas that have mastered spitting like bosses and others who never seem to adopt the action at all. We love the differing personalities of alpacas Alpacas can also kick and use a forceful shoving manoeuvre but spitting generally comes first. Their vocal ability is quite distinctive also. Including a loud alarm call which I will post about soon. The differing levels of spit. Some are just a warning air spit Then theres the dont push me spit. Or the full on Im serious stay away from me regurgitated green stomach content, pancake variety, smells putrid Its just spit, people. Part of the alpacas quirky uniquesness. And to conclude. Ive never really been spat at and not deserved it Well maybe once

06.01.2022 Good information.

05.01.2022 Chakana Blue Secret and her Mum.
