25.01.2022 MEET THE SPEAKERS Marianne E Krasny, a professor in the Department of Natural Resources and Director of the Civic Ecology Lab at Cornell University, is one of o...ur keynote speakers for the 2020 virtual ‘Changing Tides’ conference. She leads efforts to teach environmental and climate education Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) for international audiences, and to facilitate online learning and resource sharing communities for over 10,000 environmental activists and educators globally. Dr Krasny conducts research with members of the Civic Ecology Lab to answer questions about how to scale up the impacts of civic ecology practices such as community gardening, litter clean ups and volunteer oyster restoration, and about how online learning can lead to more effective environmental education and stewardship practices and climate actions. She is currently working on a book about scaling up individual climate action, such as plant-rich diets, through social networks and activism. Her other books includes: Civic Ecology: Adaptation and Transformation from the Ground Up (with K Tidball) Urban Environmental Education Review (with A Russ) Communicating Climate Change: A Guide for Educators (with A Armstrong and J Schuldt) Grassroots to Global: Broader Impacts of Civic Ecology Advancing Environmental Education Practice https://dnr.cals.cornell.edu/people/marianne-krasny/ #aaee2020changingtides

24.01.2022 What IS Ocean Literacy? SeaWeek Australia 2020 by @AustralianAssociationForEnvironmentalEducationInc , in collaboration with the Australian Marine Education Network members, is a week-long celebration and deep dive into the global ocean and 'ocean literacy'. Ocean literacy is the understanding of the ocean's influence on you, and your influence on the ocean, but that is a very broad definition. 'Ocean literacy' as a subject is broken up into 7 key principles. Each principle... is a vital component of information and understanding that we need to be ocean literate. These principles are what make up ocean literacy, and content best suited to students within the range of K to 12 have been identified. Library of resources: https://education.ocean.org/oceanlitlib/ Portal for teachers: https://oceanliteracy.unesco.org/resour/audience/educators/ In 2020 Sea Week Australia is devoting a week to developing ocean literacy principle #5: "The ocean supports a great diversity of life and ecosystems" Do you have a photo to share that shows what this principle means to you? 23.01.2022 Interesting new research about participation in nature stewardship in Australia by UNSW Science Are you an "uber steward"? Recent UNSW Science study of environmental stewardship found that 12% of people stood out in their actions to care for their local place. This included restoration such as clean-ups, educating others, explaining the rules, using resources sustainably, preserving nature, advocating and monitoring. Read more about the research here https://www.sciencedirect.com//artic/pii/S0006320720307722

21.01.2022 Thank you SeaWeek Australia. LOVED last year's calendar!!

18.01.2022 Time to celebrate the Spring Equinox! Today the sun will cross the equator to enter the sky's Southern Hemisphere. When this happens, the hours of daylight and ...the hours of darkness are about equal almost everywhere on Earth. For us it means the days are only going to get longer and warmer and the nights, shorter. The fact that flowers are bursting into bloom is no coincidence, as many spring-flowering plants rely on the shortening night length to induce flowering. Here are just a few you can see in flower at the Gardens at the moment. #ozplants #spring #flowers #equinox sbrogers

18.01.2022 Meet the speakers - this is going to be amazing!

16.01.2022 VERY EXCITING SNIPE NEWS! This is the second year that this snipe - ELF70 - has returned to Jerrabomberra Wetlands! In addition, ELF58 was also seen yesterday a...nd was banded during our recent satellite tagging in Jan of this year. this means both birds have been to Japan/Russia and back since we last saw them! Talking to one of the Latham's Snipe Project Managers Dr Birgita Hansen; "this indicates the huge value in (a) the snipe banding and flagging program at jerra, and (b) the importance of resighting efforts by local birdos and photographers." We encourage you all to get out there with your binoculars and big cameras and send in any photos you take to us either via Facebook or to [email protected]. These photos help inform the ongoing research and are very important for our researchers to have. Jerrabomberra Wetlands is the only site in Australia where this information exists or has ever existed. 08.01.2022 Just in time for Australian Pollinator Week! Earlier this month, the first female Metallic Green Carpenter Bees this spring were spotted on the Sennas at the e...dge of the Sydney Region Garden. Metallic Green Carpenter Bees, Xylocopa aerata, were originally thought to be extinct in this area until their first sighting at the Gardens in 2017. Amazingly, the Australian National Botanic Gardens is home to the only known population of these bees in inland southern Australia. Their common name comes from the habit of excavating their nests in soft wood with their strong mandibles, although the Australian species commonly use soft, pithy wood found in plants like Banksia and Xanthorrhoea stems. Little else is known about their ecological requirements, but experts will be searching for nesting sites in suitable stems of different trees and shrubs in the Gardens throughout this summer. Australia is home to over 2,000 native bees that play an essential role in the pollination of native plant species as well as in crop pollination. Australian Pollinator Week acknowledges Australia's important and unique insect pollinators. Tim Leach Can you spot the difference? The female Metallic Green Carpenter Bee has a shiny metallic blue green body with relatively little surface fur. The males of this species looks quite different with yellow fur on its thorax.

04.01.2022 MEET THE SPEAKERS Briony Towers is a Research Fellow in the RMIT Centre for Urban Research. Her research interests include child-centred disaster risk reduction... (CCDRR), disaster risk reduction education (DRRE), school emergency management and climate change adaptation in the education sector. Briony’s multi-disciplinary approach to research is grounded in socio-cultural theories of human development and informed by theory and practice in child participation, critical pedagogy, place-based education and community-based disaster risk reduction. Her PhD in socio-cultural psychology at University of Tasmania involved an in-depth qualitative investigation of how children living in bushfire prone areas of south eastern Australia understand and manage bushfire risk. She has since conducted research on CCDRR and DRRE for emergency management agencies around Australia, including the NSW Rural Fire Service, NSW Fire and Rescue, the WA Department of Fire and Emergency Services and the Victorian Country Fire Authority. She has also conducted research on CCDRR for Plan International and Save the Children in Indonesia and the Philippines. For her current research project, funded by the Bushfire and Natural Hazards Cooperative Research Centre, she is collaborating with children, youth, educators and emergency management agencies to develop effective and sustainable models of school-based DRRE for the Australian context. See Briony in the fourth session of the AAEE2020 Online Conference presenting 'Disaster Risk Reduction Education: Pathways toward a critical pedagogy of place.' https://www.rmit.edu.au//staff-contacts/academic-staff/t/t #aaee2020changingtides
