25.01.2022 #TBT 1966 The Battle of Long Tan In June 1966, 6 RAR arrived in Vietnam and formed half of the infantry presence within the 1st Australian Task Force. From th...e 16 to 18 August 1966, the Battalion took part in Operation SMITHFIELD, later known as the Battle of Long Tan. On the night of the 16 August a mortar and recoilless rifle attack shelled the task force area. In response to the attack, B Company was dispatched to locate enemy base-plate positions and follow up enemy withdrawal routes. On the 18 August, D Company relieved B Company. As they swept through a rubber plantation, they were shortly thereafter engaged for over three hours by 1500-2500 Viet Cong troops. They held their ground with grim determination and heroism, inflicting significant casualties before being reinforced by A Company. A US Presidential Unit Citation was awarded to D Company for their courageous efforts. 18 August is now commemorated each year as Long Tan Day in memory of the eighteen soldiers that gave their lives in battle. #brisbanesbest #brisbanegrown #BattleofLongTan Photo: AWM
