23.01.2022 Kiln firing log book is a valuable tool for the kiln operator and kiln service person. Provides a detailed firing history of your Kiln and ware results. The amount of detail depends on the individual. Main items are start and finish time for length of firing. Your control settings and adjustments. Particulars on ware target temperature / cone value / positioning decisions. Recommend using witness cones every now and then and note any chamber variations that you need to know when loading your glazed ware. The best test for chamber temperatures is your glaze results of course. If mixing your own glazes keep details and be aware that different batches of raw minerals will vary your results from time to time. Now relax and have your cuppa or glass of water and remember as we get older we can not remember everything .

20.01.2022 Keep an eye on your kiln plugs and sockets at regulator intervals if visible. I have never had burnout to this extent as wire burns off at plug well before this. Electrical Tested Ok with no visual external signs of heating 14 days ago. It happens so quick. Kiln used constantly as it should be. The socket was upgraded to a 25 amp, October 2015, as we do on kiln control boxes. The 20 amp plug was dismantled and checked on site, no heat damage or loose connections. Did not have a 25 amp plug in ute at time but usually no problem. So always make time and have access to be able to "eyeball" plugs and sockets.

18.01.2022 It's a hot summers day and inside your garage the concrete floor underfoot is cool to the sole of your feet. How refreshing as you sip liquid from your glass. The large concrete mass at one with the earth beneath sucking the heat from within your feet. So why do potters keep placing their ware to be fired directly onto the brick or slab chamber floor of their Electric kiln? Then ask me why their ware is under firing on the bottom of their kiln chamber. Time and time again I ...hear the same story. Always use a kiln shelf / tile with 25 to 50 mm support props to raise above the chamber floor, depending on where the lowest element row is positioned. This allows the circulation of the chamber atmosphere beneath this shelf and thus raise it's temperature upwards towards the main mass temperature. Maybe not perfect but better than before. The other factor is the rate of heating during the firing. Slower the heat rate the more even the firing so strike a balance to suit your kiln performance. Happy firing Ross Gleghorn See more

15.01.2022 Do you have a kiln that won't get to the temperatures you require? We can supply kiln upgrade kits that will enable you to fire to higher temperatures. We have supplied kits to suit Ward, Tetlow and many other kilns. For example Ward C4 / HPF4 10 Amp kilns (max 1000c / cone 06) can be upgraded to 15 Amps to allow stoneware firings 1280C max / cone 9) but depends on your kilns condition with elements and refracory lining. 13.01.2022 Checking kiln current before firing with Bartlett V6 This kiln is fitted with the Bartlett V6 and the optional current sensor. This can be used to check that the kiln elements are operating at the expected power output before packing the kiln..... For more information check our website. http://aakilns.com.au/

12.01.2022 Did you know that electric kiln element coils can require replacement even though they are not physically broken. The internal resistance increases slowly with each firing which reduces the power output of the elements. A point will be reached when the elements cannot provide sufficient heat for required kiln operation. Solution is to replace the element set. We manufacture quaility Kanthal A1 element coils.

11.01.2022 I have discussed with kiln owners explaining pitted surface, rough feel and stretch marks which is all part of ageing elements. As the elements gradually wear out the power output also decreases which limits the maximum temperature attainable. The higher the temperature used for firing the faster the elements wear out. The element does not have to break or burn out to be replaced. This is more to do with worn elements being pushed hard to try to achieve the target temperature with element coils bunching together and collapsing.

11.01.2022 We are happy to announce that in addition to supplying Tetlow brick kilns we are now a supplier of Woodrow fibre kilns. http://aakilns.com.au/kilns.php

06.01.2022 Here is a quick video showing just quick and easy it is to program a Bartlett 3K controller for a conefire. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByB9darhG7w

06.01.2022 Nothing like taking photos of your holiday or weekend away as you can sit in your lounge after the event with the pictures telling their story. Same for kiln equipment repairs needed. We can then look at our gmail to see what our customers are referring to. Makes it easier all round and avoids where possible, getting it wrong and having your Electrician Kiln repairer not waste his time or your $$$$$$. Previous repairs may have been carried out and items do get changed. Kiln manufacturers do change models and design. AA Kilns staff do our best for our customers to ensure correct item first time. I am sure you want the same for your customers. Enjoy your weekend Ross, Lee. Michael
