22.01.2022 Bristol Translates: Literary Translation Summer School Join us at Bristol Translates for a four-day literary translation summer school with workshops in eleven languages, panel discussions with publishers and editors, and an exclusive opportunity to compete for a book contract with Comma Press. Bristol Translates will take place online from 5 to 8 July 2021. Workshops will be led by some of the most distinguished translators from the relevant language into English.... The summer school is directed by Ros Schwartz and Amanda Hopkinson. The Keynote address will be given by George Szirtes. Norman Erikson Pasaribu is one of Indonesia’s most vital and irresistible new writers, a poet distinguished by his tender, tragicomic voice. Tiffany Tsao is a novelist, translator, and critic. Her translation of poems from Sergius Seeks Bacchus was a winner of the 2017 PEN Presents East and Southeast Asia translation competition. She currently resides in Sydney. _____________________________________________________________________ Melodrome: A Story from the Panoramic delta Marcelo Cohen Translated by Chris Andrews Marcelo Cohen (Buenos Aires, 1951) is a widely respected and highly innovative Argentinian novelist, who has invented a distinctively South American kind of speculative fiction. Chris Andrews is the Australian translator of Roberto Bolaño and César Aira. He is the author of two poetry collections and a literary critic. He made his name internationally as the first English translator of the Chilean novelist, Roberto Bolaño (19532003). __________________________________________________________________ Napoleon’s Beekeeper Winner of the prestigious ‘Premio Novela Breve Juan March Cencillo’ José Luis de Juan Translated by Elizabeth Bryer José Luis de Juan was born on Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands. He is the author of eight novels, as well as stories, non-fiction and poetry, for which he has received literary awards in Spain and abroad. Elizabeth Bryer is a writer and translator. The novels she has translated from Spanish include Aleksandra Lun’s The Palimpsests, awarded a PEN/Heim Translation fund grant in 2017; Claudia Salazar Jiménez’s Blood of the Dawn, and José Luis de Juan’s Napoleon’s Beekeeper. _____________________________________________________________________ Imminence Mariana Dimópulos Translated by Alice Whitmore Mariana Dimópulos’s mesmerising novella reinforces her standing as one of the most expressive and inventive of contemporary Latin American writers. Alice Whitmore is the Pushcart Prize-nominated translator of Guillermo Fadanelli's See You at Breakfast? (Giramondo 2016) and Mariana Dimópulos's All My Goodbyes (Giramondo 2017) and Imminence (Giramondo 2019). Prizes will be awarded for the best unpublished literary translations from any language into English, subject to finding a reader (entrance fee will be refunded if no reader is available). Literary translation includes poetry, prose, or d...rama from any period. First prize: 350; second prize: 200; third prize: 100; other entries may receive commendations. All three prizes also include one year’s BCLA membership.
