05.01.2022 STRETCH YOUR NECK In today's society, most of us spend a majority of our day at a desk typing on a computer, or regularly checking our smartphones. . .... This can lead to rounded shoulders, consistent forward head posture, and subsequent pain from these positions. In most cases, this pain can be relieved via some simple stretching. . . The sternocleidomastoid (SCM) is a muscle located on the front and side of your neck. It starts at the clavicle, and runs all the way up to the base of your skull. Humans have two of these muscles, one left and one right. . . The role of the SCM is to rotate the head to the opposite side of contraction, and to flex the neck forward. For example, contracting the left SCM would rotate your head to the right and slightly flex your neck forward. However, when both left and right SCM contract together, we flex our neck and slightly elevate our sternum. This puts us in a position allowing us to look down at our phones, and type on our computers. In moderation, this isn't a bad thing, but recent studies show that the average person spends at least 5 hours per day looking at their smartphone. This extended use can lead to the SCM becoming irritated, possibly causing neck pain and discomfort. . . Use this stretch to help relieve yourself from any discomfort you may feel in your neck while working at a desk, or in everyday life. Perform it 2-3 times a day, in a 3 second hold with 10 repetitions each side, and your neck will thank you! . .
