09.01.2022 If you've ever wanted to see multiple meteor showers, then you're in for a fiery performance. Astronomy fans in the southern hemisphere could see up to 35 meteo...rs an hour in a thrilling mid-winter show after 10pm this Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, explains Macquarie University astronomer Dr Tayyaba Zafar: https://macq.it/32OWRIR #LighthouseNewsflash
09.01.2022 The TAIPAN team have achieved the instrument's next major milestone! After two weeks of commissioning at the UK-Schmidt telescope at Siding Spring observatory the Starbug robots are moving to within 8 microns of their target, as you can see in this movie. This is not a real configuration for astronomical observation, but one we have created to push the system beyond what it would normally be required to do. Thanks to all the team for this great achievement! (Movie by Tony Far...rell) ^NPFL See more
08.01.2022 Bruce Berriman could talk to us about the 6 NASA archives hosted at Catlech IPAC, but this would take him all day. Instead he's discussing the challenges facing the Keck Observatory Archive (KOA). At Keck the Observer Owns the Night - there are no restrictions placed on the observer. This allows the observing team to be very creative, but also results in challenges when archiving the data
07.01.2022 Our Astronomical Data Archives Meeting 2019 - has kicked off this morning. Mark Allen (CDS) and Bruce Berriman (Caltech/IPAC) have started the meeting. We have 45+ people from 5 continents joining us this week to discuss and share technologies, tools and ideas.
04.01.2022 We celebrate International Women's Day following our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. These are some of the great women working at AAO-MQ. #IWD2020 #IWD Tayyaba Zafar is a Lecturer, an astronomer, @GMTelescope MANIFEST instrument Project Scientist, and the first women from Pakistan who took a trip to Antarctica under @HomewardBound16. She says: Take your space and let your universe expand. Rebecca Brown is an optical engineer that works on optical fibres and ...their positioning technologies. Her current research involves optimising integral field units called hexabundles which gather light from distant galaxies to enable astronomers to understand the origins and dynamics of galaxies. Summer Luo, Administrator, Finance & Staff at Australian Astronomical Optics, Macquarie University. #Glow with PRIDE Katrina Sealey is the COO of the AAO Consortium and leads the Research Data and Software team at the AAO-MQ combining her two passions, astronomy and enabling others to reach their potential. She successfully led the AAO-MQ Athena Swan accreditation process. Celestina Saavedra Lacombe is an electrical engineer and PM new to projects involving bespoke technology and research. Coming from the more mundane 'real-world’ industries, she is excited for the opportunity to test her abilities and resilient approach to PM at AAO-MQ. Other interests: health, cooking, dancing. Daisy Liu: "Have no fear. Your admin lady is here! Just living is not enough... one must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower." Nuria Lorente has been working in optical and radio astronomy and instrumentation for over 25 years. Nuria mostly works in software and systems engineering, and enjoys investigating misbehaving telescope instruments, and solving software and data puzzles, to facilitate world class science.
03.01.2022 Marco Molinaro (INAF) discusses the European Open Science Cloud, aiming for transparent, data-driven solutions in storage, management, analysis, and reuse of research data, across borders and disciplines including science, technology, humanities, social sciences.
