22.01.2022 Professor Suzanne Chambers AO, one of the world’s foremost experts on the psychology of cancer, has written a powerful mental health resource called Facing the Tiger that works to ease the psychological distress suffered by many men with prostate cancer. However, research tells us that simply asking (or telling) men to buy a copy of Facing the Tiger isn’t actually the best way to help them. Here’s why and what you should do about it.

20.01.2022 On average a veterinarian takes their life every 12 weeks in Australia. Vets are so much more than our pets' heroes. They are brothers and sisters, they are mo...thers and fathers, they are daughters and sons. Our vets are losing their colleagues. Parents are losing their children. Children are losing their parents. Help us save them. Love Your Pet Love Your Vet is committed to raising awareness of veterinary suicide and creating a paradigm shift within this industry - because our veterinary professionals deserve to do the work they are so passionate about without the negative (and often life-threatening) consequences. Every donation helps. Every conversation helps. Let's work together to save our veterinary workers. www.loveyourpetloveyourvet.com.au

09.01.2022 Tim Prenzler on criminal justice ethics ‘The democratic chain of delegated authority and public service ethics are fundamental to understanding the requirements and complexities of criminal justice ethics. Criminal justice personnel are authorised to use direct force against citizens. They have the capacity to shame people with the label of criminal guilt, to extract monetary fines or impose compensation orders, and to deprive people of their liberty, often for extended perio...ds of time. Inevitably, the only source of legitimacy for these powers is the whole of society. Consequently, legitimacy in criminal justice is dependent on legitimacy in government, and legitimacy in government requires the clear consent and participation of all citizens. In larger human groupings there is a practical rationale for representative government, but its legitimacy requires equal and fair votes and high levels of direct input by community members. Other conditions include transparency, a strict and enforceable public service code of conduct that emphasises neutrality in service, independent administrative appeals and financial audit systems, freedom of information, and a well-resourced independent and capable anti-corruption agency.’ Extract from: Ethics and Accountability in Criminal Justice: Towards a Universal Standard https://bit.ly/2MuR3Ax
09.01.2022 Determining what ‘drives’ school refusal is an integral part of beginning to understand the child, and developing a program that is specifically geared to their particular situation. The child who refuses to go to school because they love being at home with mum needs a very different return to school program than the child who refuses to go to school because they are mercilessly bullied. School refusal occurs across all socioeconomic groups. This means that whether the child ...is from an affluent family in a private school or a less privileged family in a public school, school refusal can and does develop. It is also equally prevalent amongst boys and girls. The physical symptoms expressed by a child who is refusing to attend school can be overwhelming for everyone involved. Parents will often report that the severity of symptoms is what ultimately convinces them to acquiesce. If, however, we understand that these physical symptoms are a normal part of panic and not life threatening, it becomes easier to assist the child work through the symptoms rather than giving in and allowing him/her to stay home. As important as it is for parents to learn to recognise panic symptoms, it is equally important for schools to be able to identify them as well. All too often parents will diligently work with their child in the morning to facilitate a timely arrival to school only to be called an hour or two later by the school and instructed to come pick the child up and take them home. While I am aware that schools are busy places with little time to spare, it is important that they too learn to recognise the child’s panic symptoms and assist them without necessitating a call to parents. 08.01.2022 How to provide effective psychological support for prostate cancer patients for $24.95. Kathy is a Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse in a large regional hospital. She provides a wide range of care to prostate cancer survivors and has this to say about one important tool she uses in her daily work: Facing the Tiger is amazing. I have had so much positive feedback from patients and their wives/partners. One wife told me that despite her husband feeling really low, he just wasn’...t going to read it. So, she read it first and then talked him into starting it. Once he finished it, she said he felt so much better, knowing others had been through what he is going through. It helped lift his spirits throughout his radiation treatment. I give this book to any of my patients who are struggling. Older men particularly are often reluctant to admit distress or to seek help for mental health issues. Facing the Tiger was explicitly developed by one of the world’s foremost experts in the psychology of cancer to support best-practice psychosocial care based on the Australian guidelines for multidisciplinary treatment of prostate cancer and is endorsed by the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, The Urological Society of Australia & New Zealand and the Australian & New Zealand Urological Nurses Society. It is a low-intensity mental health intervention in the form of a 182-page self-help book. Over 200,000 Australian men currently live with prostate cancer. Almost half of them report unmet psychological and psychosocial care needs. Including Facing the Tiger in your health practice can play an important role in ensuring prostate cancer survivors get the help they need, even if they don’t yet realise they need it.
03.01.2022 Busy times at the world launch last week of Facing the Tiger: A Survivorship Guide for Men with Prostate Cancer and Their Partners [https://bit.ly/33D2HQ6] by Suzanne Chambers AO. A live Facebook stream cross to the UICC for World Cancer Day with Suzanne, Jeff Dunn, CEO of PCFA and Peter Heathcote, urologist and former USANZ President, was fitted in as well! The photos (R-L)) show Cancer Qld Chair Anita Green, Suzanne and Jeff, the indefatigable survivor and super-physio Pete...r Dornan, and the very (Covid) busy Jeanette Young, Qld Chief Medical Officer who took the time to support the cause. Thanks also to sponsors AbbVie. So important to make a difference to the psychological wellbeing of prostate cancer survivors. The stats show a worrying trend of anxiety and depression, years after a diagnosis. Vital that we help urologists provide copies of the book to patients. See more

02.01.2022 In 2020, amidst a world pandemic, a group of Australian researchers published the most important new approach to prostate cancer care since the early 2000s The Prostate Cancer Survivorship Essentials Framework. This framework is designed to guide modern best practice treatment for prostate cancer toward better survivorship outcomes. Kudos to Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, Urologicial Society of Australia and New Zealand, Australia and New Zealand Urological Nurses Society, AstraZeneca and AbbVie for supporting the world’s first prostate cancer patient care resource to include information on what the Prostate Cancer Survivorship Essentials Framework means to men and their partners and how it can contribute to a better quality of life Facing the Tiger https://bit.ly/3ltWT4I
