18.01.2022 Association Update It has been a busy few weeks. Since our last newsletter our days (and nights) have been filled with advocacy endeavours, government meetings, submissions and as always member support. We are also working on the launch of some exciting new services for members. AAPi is currently working on 3 key advocacy areas: *Raising the Medicare Rebate to $150 for the clients of all psychologists. We are also working towards a one-tier system for all the funding models (...DVA, Open Arms, Private Health) to return equality to psychology. *Incentives and allowances for regional, rural and remote practitioners similar to those afforded to GPs. *A Medicare rebate for provisional psychologists. We have had positive meetings with the Queensland and South Australian Governments and we have secured the support of the Western Australian Government for regional, rural and remote incentives and Deputy Prime Minister Joyce has supported the provisional psychology rebate. Both have written to Minister Hunt, endorsing AAPi's recommendations for these. We have upcoming meetings with the NT Government, The Greens and Beyond Blue. Thank you to all of our members who have assisted with these activities. For a brief summary of our other recent activities on behalf of our members see here - https://www.aapi.org.au//A/Associationupdate11october.aspx

17.01.2022 Important information- What constitutes a valid referral under Better Access There seems to be a lot of misinformation floating around regarding what constitutes a valid referral under Better Access. It is vital that psychologists providing services under Medicare understand the requirements and what constitutes a valid referral. AAPi has received a number of queries in recent days, especially regarding if the number of sessions to be provided needed to be included on a referral to ensure validity. 15.01.2022 We are sharing an article published today by the ABC discussing the long waiting lists and lack of bulk billing psychologists in regional Australia. It’s an important topic. We need widescale changes made to support and bolster the psychology workforce. We were however disappointed to read the section quoting APS CEO Dr Zena Burgess, which we believe to be ill-informed and out of touch with the realities facing psychologists in Australia. The extract is below: Australian Psyc...hological Society (APS) CEO Zena Burgess said the shortage of psychologists in regional Australia might affect whether a practice could afford to bulk-bill, impacting on people's ability to access mental health services. "When there are not enough psychologists in the area, some practices may struggle to offer bulk-billing," Dr Burgess said. The real issue affecting a psychologist's ability to bulk bill is the low rebate amount and the discriminatory two tier system that disadvantages clients of registered psychologists. AAPi is supportive of incentives to encourage more psychologists into regional areas, however the Government can no longer ignore the deleterious consequences of the inequitable two tier system. This situation will be exacerbated once the 4+2 pathway is retired as there are insufficient masters course places available to allow those graduating honours degrees in regional Australia to access this pathway. AAPi is calling for more remote learning courses to be made available in all the areas of psychology to allow more students to remain in their regional locations. However this MUST be combined with a one tier, higher rebate. AAPi is calling on the Government to urgently increase the rebate to $150, available to the clients of ALL psychologists. This will allow psychologists the ability to bulk bill more clients while also attracting more psychologists into private practice thus reducing many of the barriers to accessing the expert mental health care that registered psychologists provide. https://www.abc.net.au//psychologists-facing-tsun/13054708 Now is a critical time for psychologists to unite together. Please join AAPi today. www.aapi.org.au

15.01.2022 As part of AAPi's continued push to see the urgent need for mental health support to be made more accessible by increasing the rebate for registered psychologists, we are included in an article in the Sydney Morning Herald today. The article reports that Victorians are contacting Beyond Blue support platforms in increased numbers since lockdown started on Saturday, as other research found many were still experiencing heightened anxiety and depression from 2020. Swinburne Uni...versity's Centre for Mental Health was still reporting heightened symptoms of anxiety and depression that had endured since late 2020. It mentions AAPi's data showing that in October 2020 one in three psychologists were no longer accepting new clients, with more than half having waiting lists of more than four weeks. https://www.smh.com.au//disheartened-afraid-distressed-vic
