22.01.2022 5 Summer weeds Summer weeds can be just as painful for lawn lovers as winter weeds. Here are 5 common Summer weeds that are out right now. #1: Clover thrives in a poorly fertilised lawn, so a clover infestation is often a sign you need to feed your lawn more often #2: Bindii (Bindy eye / jo-jo) is the Summer weed you will feel often before you see. The bane of the existence of bare feet everywhere. Dry conditions and mowing too close can create the perfect conditions for bind...ii to thrive. #3: Creeping oxalis is often mistaken for clover, though its leaves are smaller and typically lighter. Creeping oxalis uses exploding seed heads to spread seeds 3 metres or more allowing it to spread rapidly. #4: Crowsfoot grass is a prolific seeder and spreader, which will take over lawns if not controlled. It thrives in low nutrient and compacted soil conditions so regular fertilising and aeration can prevent it ever taking root. #5: Nutgrass is a tall grass-like plant from the sedge family that thrives in wet weather. It uses a network of underground stems from small tubers (sedges) to spread and respawn. Tricky to eradicate, nutgrass can stay dormant in the ground for 70 years. Most weeds thrive in unhealthy lawns. Prevention is the best cure, so maintaining a healthy lawn can mean these weeds never become an issue for your lawn. 01.01.2022 & () . Call ' . ... A healthy lawn that is regularly fed, maintained and mown will be able to tolerate hot & dry conditions quite well. However, there will always be times when it needs a bit of extra water. The key to good watering is to ensure it is both effective and efficient. Watering early in the day is best. If you water in the evening, the grass will stay wet overnight, creating humidity which could lead to the spread of fungal diseases. Don’t water when it’s windy. Aim for deeper moisture penetration by watering less often, slower and for longer to encourage deeper roots. Fit a mechanical tap timer to turn the tap off after a pre-determined time so you don't waste water. Invest in a quality lawn sprinkler with adjustable patterns so you are not watering paths and driveways. Call ' .
