15.01.2022 New research by ACOSS presents a stark picture of the impact of the $300 a fortnight cut to income support scheduled for next Friday. 80% said they will definitely have to both skip meals, and reduce how much fresh fruit and vegetables they buy. 47% said they will likely have to skip medicines or ration their doses, and that specialist services will be harder to afford.... The impact will be devastating. It's time to #RaisetheRateforGood Read the research here: https://www.acoss.org.au//If-It-Wasnt-For-The-Supplement-I

14.01.2022 The Victorian State Budget was released yesterday and in the words of Emma King, CEO of VCOSS of which we are a proud member: 'This budget is literally brimming with positive, smart and effective social policy measures that will make real inroads into poverty and disadvantage. Perhaps most importantly, this budget sets us on a new course. One where people come first, and community and individual wellbeing is the main game in town.'... We welcome this impressive budget and look forward to monitoring the progress of the many positive initiatives that will be rolling out around Victoria in the months and years ahead.

09.01.2022 The AASW is a supporter of the #NoChildLeftBehind campaign. Join their free event marking National Child Protection Week...
08.01.2022 This week is National Child Protection Week. It is an opportunity for us to take stock and reflect on all the ways we are ensuring the protection of children an...d young people, and all the ways we are not. Our current treatment of children seeking asylum and refugees is not protecting them and we need to take action. Many people seeking asylum and refugees on temporary visas have lost work as a result of Covid-19, yet remain ineligible for critical safety net support - JobKeeper, JobSeeker, and for some even Medicare. More than 14,000 people seeking and refugees are projected to become homeless as a result of pandemic. We are calling on Minister for Families and Social Services Senator Anne Ruston to do more and ensure #NoChildLeftBehind during this pandemic!
07.01.2022 Last night we held a member consultation to assist us to develop a submission to the Victorian Law Reform Commission around improving responses to sexual offences. If you're a member working in this area and would like to contribute we'd love to hear from you. Please drop Anneka an email via [email protected].
07.01.2022 Victorian social work students, heres a virtual volunteer opportunity that might be of interest. Please share amongst your networks!
07.01.2022 This pandemic is touching everyones life, but the risk of COVID-19 and its impacts are distributed unequally. The physical and mental health of older people, people living in poverty and marginalised racial and ethnic groups are at elevated risk now and well into the future. Australia is going backwards in terms of social inequality and this is a matter of life and death for those most disadvantaged. https://www.anu.edu.au//australia-to-%E2%80%98bounce-back-

05.01.2022 Social workers would be well-aware of the imminent surge in demand for domestic violence services when financial coronavirus support is wound down as of a Friday this week. Its time to #RaisetheRateforGood
05.01.2022 The loss of employment, the limited capacity of their families to assist, their inability to fly home and the absence of any meaningful financial support from government, means that a substantial proportion of international students in the private rental sector are in dire straits.
04.01.2022 Social workers welcome extension of telehealth The AASW has welcomed the announcement by Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt of a six month extension to the temporary COVID-19 Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) telehealth items. Read our full media release here: https://bit.ly/32GrGS3

04.01.2022 A great article by social worker Sammy Huyen... Providing a one size fits all approach for our vulnerable populations may result in inferior care. We must continue to work towards culturally safe mental health services which prevent CALD communities and young people from slipping through the cracks.

02.01.2022 Under the state government's $31.7 million initiative, about 420 private rental properties will be leased for two years and offered to tenants who have medical issues that make them more vulnerable to COVID-19 as well as those living in larger households.
02.01.2022 In recognition of Asbestos Awareness Week 2020, our friends at Slater and Gordon will be offering a free legal education webinar Asbestos and Silicosis Dust Claims Demystified on Thursday 26th November. An estimated 4,000 Australians each year die from Asbestos related disease which is more than triple the annual road toll. Approximately 700 Australians die each year from Mesothelioma, the aggressive cancer caused by Asbestos exposure. This webinar will talk about the histor...y of Asbestos use in Australia, the rights and entitlements available to people who have been impacted by Asbestos disease, and will also discuss the psychosocial impact of Asbestos disease on people and their families. We will also cover the emerging issue of Silicosis dust disease; rights and entitlements. This webinar will be of interest not only to social workers in Palliative Care and Oncology settings but to any social workers and other health workers who would like to gain awareness of the impact of Asbestos in the community.
02.01.2022 Victorian member Christiana joined today’s Walk Against Family Violence as part of our team today! Wonderful to see our members getting involved in this important day. #WAFV2020 #WhyWeWalk
01.01.2022 Positive news to see this announcement but will it be enough? A significant increase in demand for food relief is anticipated as as a result of the imminent cuts to the Coronavirus supplement as if tomorrow. Surely its time to #RaisetheRateforGood?!
01.01.2022 We’re sending a clear message: no one is ‘broken’ because of their sexuality or gender identity. These views won’t be tolerated in Victoria and neither will these abhorrent practices. Applauding the introduction of the Change or Suppression (Conversion) Practices Prohibition Bill 2020 which will outlaw conversion therapy seeking to change someone’s sexuality or gender identity in Victoria.
01.01.2022 This in Andre Zonn, a long-standing AASW member and a member of our Branch Management Committee, supporting the #RaisetheRateforGood campaign. On Friday, JobSeeker faces a devastating $300 a fortnight cut. A range of other changes will also come into force. Now, more than ever, we need a permanent, adequate raise to JobSeeker and other allowances so that people can put food on the table and keep a roof over their head.... If you'd like to get involved, take a look at the campaign website here: www.raisetherate.org.au
