24.01.2022 Updated figures from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare released on Monday show 103,599 Australians were waiting for a home care package they had been approved for at the end of March, meaning the waitlist had shrunk by just 838 places since the end of December 2019. This was the situation when we submitted our document to the royal commission and it is disappointing that here has been no movement.

24.01.2022 New evidence out today from UWA has revealed the state’s charities are facing increasing financial pressure resulting in fewer services and lower quality jobs i...n the sector. Louise Giolitto, CEO WACOSS, said: The evidence is clear that the funding for community services is simply not covering the costs of the crucial services provided by charities." The reality is Western Australians are unable to access the services they need to address hardships and challenges in their lives." Full report: https://bit.ly/LandscapeReport2020 The report was authored by Professor David Gilchrist and Mr Tom Emery, from the NFPs UWA Research Group at The University of Western Australia.

22.01.2022 Sydney Universitys Brain and Mind Centre has created modelling which suggests a 25% increase in suicide rates in regional/rural areas; partly attributable to job losses and social disconnection associated with the COVID-19 response. The team behind the modelling advocate for a continuation of JobKeeper in some form until 2022. The scheme they understand, will sustain peoples bonds to workplaces, colleagues and their social identity.

21.01.2022 IFSW Publications is pleased to present ´To the Top of the Cliff: How social work changed with COVID-19´ as a free download. Free, because knowledge should have no barriers. This book charts the social work response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on conversations with social workers from across the world and multiple reports submitted to IFSW, the authors trace how social workers took immediate responsibility for saving lives and then, by connecting together globally, established a new global strategy for the profession. The publication serves both as a historical record of what has happened, and a source of inspiration and insight for a profession at the frontline.

20.01.2022 From today, high-risk domestic violence offenders will be electronically monitored in Western Australia. Corrective Services Minister Fran Logan MLA joined me a...t the Western Australia Police Force State Operations Command Centre today to launch the two-year trial involving GPS tracking of up to 100 high-risk offenders. Offenders will wear the device attached to an ankle bracelet, which will set off an alert if they enter an exclusion zone (eg. near the victims home) or there is an attempt to tamper with the device. This is the latest tool in the arsenal of measures the McGowan Government has put in place to protect Western Australians from the scourge of family and domestic violence. It will add an extra layer of security for victims of family and domestic violence, by allowing officers to see in near real time exactly where offenders are in the community.

18.01.2022 The harsh reality of the COVID-19 pandemic is that while overall crime statistics reduced in recent months, there was one glaring exception - family and domesti...c violence. Today I joined Premier Mark McGowan and sector leaders to announce that we are investing more than $28 million in a comprehensive package of family and domestic violence support services as part of the WA Recovery Plan. The package includes: $8.6 million for 23 additional outreach workers to support women and children experiencing family and domestic violence $6.7 million to bolster the State's family and domestic violence response teams that assist individuals and families following a police call-out $4 million to double the capacity of the women's refuges under construction in Peel and Kwinana $123,000 for a job retraining pilot for women in refuges; and $1.1 million for counselling, advocacy and support services. This significant investment is underpinned by the McGowan Government's new long-term strategy to reduce family and domestic violence across Western Australia. Thanks to the Women's Council for Domestic & Family Violence Services - WA's Anne Moore and Stopping Family Violence CEO Damian Green for helping to launch 'Path to Safety: Western Australia's strategy to reduce family and domestic violence 2020-2030'. Responding to family and domestic violence in the community is key to WAs social recovery from this challenging period.

17.01.2022 That despite multiple inquiries Aboriginal deaths in custody continue is a national disgrace. Justice systems need to listen to Aboriginal communities urgently to end the overrepresentation of Aboriginal people in prisons. Our thoughts are with the family and community of this man.

16.01.2022 Women over 55 are the fastest growing cohort of people facing homelessness in Australia. Attributable to structural inequality in the economy (gender pay gap, women retiring with half the superannuation of men). Family violence also leaves many victim/survivors vulnerable to homelessness. These existing inequalities have also been compounded by job losses, and rental stress precipitated by COVID-19.

14.01.2022 There are serious mental health implications for LGBTQIA+ people who are forced to live with family members who are not supportive of their gender identity, or sexuality, in COVID-19 lockdown. The LGBT Foundation, whose helpline received 25% more calls about suicidal thoughts during lockdown, said demand for support had continued to rise, despite pandemic restrictions easing. The charity said mental health crisis calls had increased by 123% in the past month, calls about abuse by 86%, those about domestic violence by 65%, and substance misuse by 50%.

05.01.2022 This study hopes to ascertain how domestic and family violence services have adapted to the pandemic to provide continuity of support to their clients. Dr Cullen said anyone working in a position where they support people impacted by DFV is welcome to get in touch.

04.01.2022 Poverty costs everyone in our communities, not only those struggling to make ends meet. For years WACOSS has advocated with WA frontline community services fo...r an increase in JobSeeker (formerly #Newstart) that keeps people looking for a job out of poverty. During COVID-19, the Federal Government lifted people on #JobSeeker above the poverty line, and people shared their stories of finally being able to afford fresh fruit and vegetables, pay their bills, and afford medications. When we asked West Australians, 73% of you agreed that we cannot turn back to the old rate. Now, its time to make your voices heard and join us as we call on the Federal Government to #RaiseTheRateForGood Show your support at Raise the Rate Visit: www.raisetherate.com.au Anglicare WA | Communicare Inc. | Foodbank WA | Ruah | Uniting WA | Australian Council of Social Service
