24.01.2022 Nineteen years ago, I was lifting weights at Chesterton High School with my childhood friend, Chris, when the planes hit the twin towers. Everyone ran to the te...levision set that was perched in the corner of the room to watch the carnage unfold. We were only seventeen at the time. A little more than year later, on September 15th, I found myself standing on yellow footprints at the U.S. Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California. Six months later, I was on the border of Kuwait-Iraq, awaiting orders to invade. The war was both horrific and surreal. Left to our own devices, marines took it upon themselves to engage in all sorts of brutal behavior: killing civilians, torturing people, destroying and stealing property, desecrating the dead, and documenting the whole ordeal with digital cameras. Since then, many of my brothers have died from suicide, drug overdoses or cancer (more than died in combat). Sergio Alexander Kochergin and I returned home from the war and immediately joined the anti war movement, which, in the end, probably saved us from doing something really destructive. Sometimes, that history seems like a distant memory. Other times, it seems like it all happened yesterday. Today, its more of the former than the latter. Millions dead. Millions more displaced. Families, lives, communities, and dreams destroyed. Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Pakistan, Somalia, Palestine, and beyond. This is the legacy of Uncle Sams post-9/11 imperial adventures. The U.S. has destabilized the entire world. The post-9/11 political, economic, and cultural landscape fueled Trumps ascent to power. Theres no way to understand whats happening today without examining the past 20 years. In the end, we must end U.S. Empire if we hope to survive the century. Its just that simple. Only full scale demilitarization will suffice. Our only hope is international solidarity across national boundaries. I believe another world is possible.
