25.01.2022 Text - ‘A sticker is just a sticker. A sticker cannot take the place of you. Communicate have a relationship with them - that’s all YOU!’ ~ Dr Ross Greene

25.01.2022 You may hear or see the words Expressive and Receptive Language in your child’s reports. Expressive Language is when children are able to put thoughts into words a sentences that makes sense and is grammatically correct. Receptive Language is being able to understand information with what people say or when they read. This is an easy visual from Integrated Learning Strategies Always remember that your child may only show one of these indicators and it is best to raise concern...s with your Speech Pathology Professional. Graphic - Adult working with a child at a table. Text - Developmental Checklist Language Challenges. Receptive Language Often says ‘huh?’ Or ‘what?’ Ask people to repeat what they said, but testing is normal You have to look them in the eye to give instructions Ask the teacher ‘What am I supposed to do again?’ Need constant clarification Can only follow one direction at a time Can’t follow conversations Expressive Language Receives information but can’t respond Struggles with vocabulary Can’t put words together Doesn’t have complete thoughts Poor expression Tone doesn’t match words While every child develops at their own pace, there are a few signs you can watch for to see if their receptive and expressive language is developing or if there are potential gaps.

24.01.2022 Graphic - Sea Background with clouds. Text - Want to prevent ‘Power Struggles?’ Share your power! Sharing power is not losing control. It’s telling a child that their input matters, and you want to partner with them to find a solution to a problem. Behaviour challenges often occur when children feel that they have no power. 24.01.2022 Yenn Purkis Neurodiversity page IMage description: Photo of two children with laptops in a park with text. Text reads "When people talk about teaching 'social skills' to autistic kids I always cringe. We HAVE social skills, but they tend to differ from the expected. By all means teach autistic kids skills in navigating the non-autistic world but please respect that our approaches are valid too, just different."
