07.01.2022 After 27 years in one of the biggest capoeira schools in the world, I decided it was time for something new. Something new not in terms of capoeira technique, b...ut in the way things are done. More specifically, the values of group were not aligned with the values that I believe can really help individuals and communities in the long run. Capoeira shouldn’t be seen as a product, but as a valuable resource for personal growth, which then consequentially improves the communities that the individual belongs to. Like a drop in the ocean towards a better world, it will surely generate a ripple effect. E mo ri o, in Yoruba, means I see you, and this is exactly what the new school is all about. Our values will be taken seriously and will form the DNA of E mo ri o. We want to create a microcosm, where people can try hard to be better for themselves and for the world. Based on the following values, today 15 January 2020, E mo ri o is born: Our Mission: through community, give people the tools to improve themselves and the communities they belong to. Values: Transparency: achievement is up to the individual themselves. As soon as the person starts capoeira, they will get a booklet which details the exact skills they need to go to the next cord. There is no favouritism; the job of the teacher is simply to help the student to learn the skills and improve. We do not judge or interpret, we HELP. Equality: At E mo ri o, we are all equal. I felt like the cord and hierarchy methods transformed the cord into a power product, something that should represent recognition is not being used as such. Throughout 27 years of capoeira, I saw terrible injustices and misuse of power from Masters, Professors and even students with higher cords. At E mo ri o, we will not use cords in regular training, from graduados to beginners, everyone is the same. We don’t need to show off our colourful cord to prove we are more experienced, it will happen as a natural process. People will know who the more experienced ones are. I am not against the capoeira cord; during special events such as Batizados we will use the cord. People will be graded to the next level, but only as a matter of recognition of their personal achievements. Basically, you know who you are, there is no need to prove it to anyone. Creativity: We are not attached to one style, we are free to learn from anyone and students will be encouraged to learn from other teachers and other schools; Angola, Regional or contemporary. Capoeira has so much to offer, you can learn from anyone, from the highest Master to the newest student. We don’t need to incorporate everything in our training, as the core of the technical movement will come from my old school. The decision as to what we will incorporate into our daily training will be decided as a group. With all the tools that we will learn from the capoeira world, we will hopefully help capoeira to continue evolving while always preserving its deep essence of freedom and respecting the old masters for what they have done. Responsibility: All the important decisions of E mo ri o will be made as a group. We will vote. We are all equally responsible for our future as a group and the future should be decided by all. We will incorporate discussion about societal issues and makes plans of action to overcome them, or at least minimise the damage created. One drop in the ocean changes it a little, many drops can change much more. We will be the first drop. This is just the beginning and other values will be incorporated as a group throughout the existence of E mo ri o. Let’s take these new winds to go to better places!!! A big axé to everyone! Cipo. Capoeirista de corpo e alma. Filho de Iemanjá. Moleque do Brasil que saiu pro mundo. Junto e misturado é bem melhor!
