25.01.2022 KUTLU TÖREN means happy ceremony! We are pleased to invite you to join us for a Kutlu Tören right here at Abbeystowe in just a few weeks time! So what’s it all about? Building a fountain was seen as an act of piety which also demonstrated the social, economic and political standing of the person who commissioned the fountain. The fountain was not only for humans but also for animals, including stray cats and dogs allowing them access to water whenever needed. During our... lockdown for COVID-19 the Sultan of Janissary Barracks Inc. commissioned such a fountain for Abbeystowe. To celebrate its completion, we are marking the occasion with a traditional Kutlu Tören. The full afternoon program includes Turkish Oil wrestling, belly dancing, archery demonstration and traditional handwashing plus a Turkish Style Picnic Box to nibble on as you celebrate the occasion. Bookings are essential! Click through and secure your spot! https://www.eventbrite.com/e/126757540215 Music by Zafer from Janissary Barracks from 2019 medieval banquets. #supportsmall #Turkish #Oil #Wrestling

23.01.2022 Until the Middle Ages, European candles were made using tallow (animal fat). The adoption of beeswax meant candles burned with less smoke and a sweet scent, opposed to the pungent odour of tallow, and were favoured by the rich and the royals to keep their castles and houses lit. Today, you cant deny the positive impact beeswax candles can have in your home, including an all natural, bright, long burning candle without added chemicals - and Happy Flame Beeswax Candles uses local, Australian beeswax, supporting our beekeepers and bee populations. We're currently running a giveaway on Instagram with our friends at Happy Flame Beeswax Candles! To find out how to enter for your chance to win one of two Large Pillar Candles (valued at $69.50 each) check out our Instagram post here

23.01.2022 The Kingdom of Heaven Tournament is held by the re-enactment group The Templars, who face off against some of the other Crusader-era re-enactment groups. The Templars, who portray the military order of the Poor Fellow Knights of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, reside in St Ediths Village, alongside their friends The Order of The Horse, who actually re-enact their medieval adversaries, the Saracens. This weekend well be showcasing some of our photography teams favouri...te photos from the past few years - and wed love for you to share yours with us in the comments below. : 'Engaged in Battle' by David DeGroot

20.01.2022 Ever wondered how some of the re-enactors get dressed in the morning - or how many layers they wear in our crazy Queensland weather? CrowsEyeProductions has created some beautiful videos of how people from different time periods would have prepared themselves for the day in their "Getting Dressed" series.

20.01.2022 Nothing quite fills the air like cries of Pig! Pig! Pig! as our archers line up to take their shot during the archery tournament. *(No real pigs were harmed in the making of this video. Only one, very holey, rubber replica)

20.01.2022 We asked our re-enactment community to share with us some of their knowledge in a little video series we call 'A Medieval Minute'. This week we have a guest re-enactor all the way from America! In this video The Turnip Of Terror talks about something you may find under a full suit of armour, and how it helps to keep everything in place! #AMedievalMinute

18.01.2022 There are so many parts which make up the fields of Abbeystowe - the sights, the smells, the sounds. In this case, we saved Traditional flavour bottle #001, the first of the batch specially made for the Abbey by Amrita Park Meadery. 3. An Abbey Made teddy bear? Yes, we are so proud of our volunteer sewing team who have been making items for the Festival and our other events here at the Museum for years. With most of these events being cancelled and with the birth of our online shop, our team became inspired to make new creations. Anything with the Abbey Made label has been made with love and care by this small team of amazing volunteers who gather once a week here at the Abbey. This teddy named Sir Bruno is one of six styles of limited edition teddies that have been custom outfitted by the Abbey Made volunteer team, and will be available in The Abbey Shop the 1st October! 14.01.2022 Do you cut crosses in the bottom of your brussel sprouts? Some say it helps the brussel sprouts to cook more evenly, and some do it out of habit - but the act has a more medieval origin. In parts of Medieval Europe it was believed brussel sprouts, like cabbages and lettuces, hid demons inside their leaves. Carving the holy symbol before cooking was thought to drive away the evil lurking inside. : Jon Ball

I'm sure you could've guessed this one...the 4-metre bell tent from Psyclone Tents was faster by about 15 minutes, and only required one person with average camping skills. To be fair, we never told Luke Binks about this challenge (we didn't know ourselves). There was also a moment when Team Red Hart Reproductions had to loosen the guy ropes and adjust the height of the centre pole (this medieval pavilion was custom made). 10.01.2022 The 14th Century Knighting Ceremony is a small, quiet part of the Abbey Medieval Festival which is held on the Friday night at the Abbey Church, following the popular medieval tradition of knighting an individual on the eve of a battle, joust, or tournament. During the ceremony a Squire is given a knightly collar, as well as guilded spurs. They are also presented with their sword and a coif, taking vows to uphold the sanctity of their newly acquired Knight status, as well as ...the values of the Order of Chivalry. The knighting is stamped with a slap, signifying the last time they are to be struck unanswered. 09.01.2022 The jousting is definitely one of the biggest draws of the Abbey Medieval Festival - the roar of the crowd, the thrill of seeing two heavy-armour clad figures ride atop speeding horses; its a thrill that doesnt get old. In medieval history, jousts were typically held during the celebration of important events and was a way for knights to show off both their martial prowess and their chivalric nature. Our own jousts at the Abbey Medieval Festival may not have knights practis...ing to keep their skills in check, but we instead have jousters who have chosen to become skilled in their field. The jousters are incredibly talented horsemen and women who come back each year to out on a show for the crowd. Part of the delight of the watching a joust at Abbeystowe is the camaraderie of the jousters, many who have faced off against each other for years. 06.01.2022 During the tournament weekend, you may have seen some knights with extra... accessories atop their heads - but what exactly are they? In the photo below you can see Chevalier Theodore Savage, who was last year knighted in the 14th Century Knighting Ceremony, carrying around a helmet with a bear claw attached. The bear claw, which is attached to a great helm, is a heraldic achievement and is stylised in the Knight's heraldry (which you can learn more about in our video here: s...horturl.at/kqCE3) and were used to show off the knight's status and rank, as well as for identification during tournaments and battles. Great helms sit over a tighter fitting helmet with the visor removed, called a bassinet, and are shaped for jousting or cavalry. When a cavalry charge ceased, knights would remove their great helm and attach the visor back to the bassinet (or wear no visor at all). Some members of Companie Draco Routiers don't have a heraldic achievement as they are not ranked high enough to be permitted to wear one, or are unable to afford one (either in reenactment or real life). ft. 03.01.2022 How does one describe the feel of, or for that matter, the smell of an era? Were the Middle Ages as we have been taught or shown in our films and literature- a dirty, smelly break between the bathing obsessed Romans and the freshly laundered Italian Renaissance? In our latest blog, Historian Damien Fegan (Museum History Guy) talks Godliness and Cleanliness - and how the 'common knowledge' that people in the medieval period were unwashed may actually be wrong.... https://abbeymedievalfestival.com//medieval-bathing-clean/

03.01.2022 Weve been here before, so what can we learn from the past? Heres a great read about the correlation between plague and protest. https://daily.jstor.org/plague-and-protest-go-hand-in-hand/

02.01.2022 You may have seen the ethereal woodland walkers walking around Abbeystowe - but do you know their Medieval origins? The otherworldly woodland walkers represent the figure of the Green Man, who can be seen on early Medieval Churches and buildings of great importance around Britain. Green Men are one example of figures that were used to bridge the gap between Christianity and other religions in Medieval Britain, reflecting a time when pagan traditions and superstitions were sti...ll prevalent - particularly those around nature.
