20.01.2022 On this day in history: Captain James Cook claimed the entire eastern coastline of Australia as British territory after having charted its coastline in 1770. Cooks voyage of discovery (1768-1771) onboard the HMS Endeavour was commissioned by King George III with the objectives of observing the 1769 transit of Venus across the Sun, to record natural history (Joseph Banks), and to seek evidence of the undiscovered southern land. 19.01.2022 On 24 August 1936, the Australian Antarctic Territory (AAT) was created after a proclamation by Governor-General Alexander Hore-Ruthven. Australia lays claim to just under 5.9 million sq km of Antarctica, it is the largest territory of Antarctica claimed by any nation by area. However, not all countries recognise Australias claim to sovereignty in Antarctica. Despite its harsh conditions the Antarctic is of global scientific significance and is rich with minerals. Did you k...now, if the ATT was a country, it would be the worlds seventh largest. Do you know how Australia came to acquire the Australian Antarctic Territory? Let us know below. . . . . 19.01.2022 Yesterday afternoon, we were pleased to host the honourable Shannon Fentiman MP (Member for Waterford, Minister for Employment and Small Business, and Minister for Training and Skills Development) who approved the Abbey Museum successful QLD government Small Business adaptation grant to improve our abilities in the online shop space. The Minister was accompanied by Ali King - Labor for Pumicestone. Our Director Edith Cuffe, Senior Curator Michael Strong, and Chairman Paul G...arcia guided our noble guests through both the Museum and Abbey Church on a perfect and warm winter afternoon. With the many changes Covid-19 has brought to the world, the Abbey Museum included, it is incredible to feel the support in the initiatives to create new income streams for the Museum. The $10,000 grant will be used towards our newly created online shop (theabbeymuseumshop.com) to enhance what we can offer our visitors and to grow the reach of our story telling through products to sell year round. Our first product that accompanied our online shop launch, a collaborative mead with Amrita Park Meadery, sold out in less than a week. This growth into the online space has already been a fascinating and incredibly fun journey. The grant will help strengthen our momentum and help us understand and better communicate with our visitors. We are so grateful for the opportunity and support!

13.01.2022 So what if you are selected as RUNNER UP in Abbey Museums Camping Through The Ages 1420 Raffle?! Lets have a closer look at this prize package! 1. You may ...remember seeing Flaming Gargoyle Pottery from an Abbey Medieval Festival in the past. They are a small studio specialising in medieval reproduction and medievally-inspired ware based in Murrumbateman, NSW. Part one of this runner-up prize is a beautifully handcrafted pottery set including two bowls, two plates, and two drinking cups which are decorated in the 14th century Italian sgraffito style. Sgraffito refers to carving into the pottery to uncover another colour below. One of the beautifully crafted feast sets features a cat theme, and the other features a rabbit theme. 2. I thought you sold out of Abbey 2020 mead? Yes we did, but we definitely saved a few very special bottles. In this case, we saved Traditional flavour bottle #001, the first of the batch specially made for the Abbey by Amrita Park Meadery. 3. An Abbey Made teddy bear? Yes, we are so proud of our volunteer sewing team who have been making items for the Festival and our other events here at the Museum for years. With most of these events being cancelled and with the birth of our online shop, our team became inspired to make new creations. Anything with the Abbey Made label has been made with love and care by this small team of amazing volunteers who gather once a week here at the Abbey. This teddy named Sir Bruno is one of six styles of limited edition teddies that have been custom outfitted by the Abbey Made volunteer team, and will be available in The Abbey Shop the 1st October! 09.01.2022 In parts of northern Europe, particularly the Low Countries and some German-speaking areas, St. Nicholas Day has remained a time when children are given special cookies, candies, and gifts. In many places, children leave letters for St. Nicholas and carrots or grass for his donkey or horse. In the morning, they find small presents under their pillows or in the shoes, stockings, or plates they have set out for him. Oranges and chocolate coins are common treats that represent S...t. Nicholas’s legendary rescue of three impoverished girls by paying their marriage dowries with gold. Candy canes, which have the shape of a bishop’s crosier, are also given. It is thought that over the centuries the legendary St. Nicholas was merged with similar cultural and religious figures. Significant among these were the pagan Knecht Ruprecht and the Roman figure of Befana, as well as the Christ Child (Christkind, or Kris Kringle). A number of countries have traditions in which a malevolent character accompanies St. Nicholas. In France, Père Fouettard, who legend holds tried to cook three boys in a barrel of brine, is said to whip naughty children or give them coal. In Germany, Knecht Ruprecht serves as St. Nicholas’s servant and gives children who do not know their prayers sticks, stones, or coal. The terrifying devil-like Krampus is common in many central European counties and carries chains, bells, and sometimes a large basket with which to threaten naughty children. #StNicholasDay #6thDecember Image - Santa Claus Christmas card from the Abbey Museum collection.

02.01.2022 We ventured out last night to the Bribie Island Historical Society meeting at the Bribie RSL. It was great to see familiar faces and hear a talk by Karen Wallwork who compiled the stories in her newly published book titled -Beachmere - Then and Now. What began as an idea to create a pamphlet of the history of Beachmere turned into a wild research project of fact checking through limited resources, sorting through thousands of photos and editing hundreds of stories from l...ocal residents. The book was edited by Chris Sutton, who also spoke about the journey to uncover the history of this small beach town originally named by Thomas Edwin Bonney. For information on how to grab a copy, click the link. https://www.bang.org.au/history-of-beachmere Also present from the Abbey Museum was our Senior Curator Michael Strong and Chairman Paul Garcia. We took a quick moment during the break for a trivia giveaway of a bottle of Abbey 2020 mead. We asked... "King Henry VIII had how many wives?" Hands quickly raised knew the correct answer was six. "Yes, six, but how many of these six did he behead at the Tower of London?" Fewer hands raised but we indeed called upon one lucky Society member who guessed it correctly. King Henry VIII beheaded two of his six wives. Check out Bribie Island History compiled by the Historical Society on their blog. http://bribieislandhistory.blogspot.com Thanks to Barry Clark, Lynne Hooper, and the rest of the Society committee for a great evening.

01.01.2022 The pride of the British Navy during the reign of King Henry VIII, the Mary Rose, sank after three decades of service. She was one the largest purpose-built sailing warships in the fleet. The Mary Rose is thought to be named after King Henry VIII favourite sister, Mary Tudor. The Mary Rose sank whilst leading the attack against a French invasion fleet in the Solent, but it is unclear why she sank. The Mary Rose was discovered in 1971 and was raised from the sea floor on 11 October 1982.
