24.01.2022 Posted @withregram @newsouthpublishing Big congratulations to Stephen Gapps who has been shortlisted for the Les Carlyon Literary Prize for The Sydney Wars! The Sydney Wars sheds light on the first years of colonial Sydney in a new and original way, this provocative book is the first detailed account of the warfare that occurred across the Sydney region from the arrival of a British expedition in 1788 to the last recorded conflict in the area in 1817. The inaugural Les Ca...rlyon Literary Prize will be awarded for an author’s first major publication relating to Australian military history, social military history or war history, as either fiction or nonfiction, and published between 2018 and June 2020. 24.01.2022 It is 1953 and Melbourne society is looking forward to coronation season, the grand balls and celebrations for the young queen-to-be. Tilly Dunnage is, however, working for a pittance in a second-rate Collins Street salon. Her talents go unappreciated, and the madame is a bully and a cheat, but Tilly has a past she is desperate to escape and good reason to prefer anonymity. https://www.abbeys.com.au//the-dressmakers-secret-book-978 #rosalieham #australia #reading #bookstagram #abbeysbookshop #131york #sydney

22.01.2022 ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- Martin Scarsden thinks he’s put the past behind him with his lovely new partner Mandalay, her son and their home on the coast, but Mandy hasn’t. There’s quite a bit she’s never told him, and one day it comes back in a very dramatic way I thoroughly enjoyed Scrublands and Silver, but this third book, set among the powerful and corrupt ranks of Sydney business and society, is a new level altogether! 22.01.2022 ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- This was one of my favourite reads during the disquiet of early COVID19 and it stayed with me a while (the story, not the virus). Coley's writing crackles with a youthfulness as it launches into a road trip running the full extent of New Zealand, for which twin siblings Alex and Amy seem strangely ill-prepared. Along the way we glimpse into their strained relationship and their memories as children of successful, but often absent globetrotting p...arents. We also piece together Alex's life away from his home country of New Zealand, now working & playing hard in the information economy in the shimmering mirage of Dubai. A young man, far from home, finding his way through sexual self-discovery and self-exile from his family. As the kilometres rack up, so do the glitches that tell us all is not as it appears. A poignant and resonant story that will entrance many. Craig Kirchner See more

20.01.2022 January 26 fills me with a lot of trepidation. I feel a bit fearful because it is also a moment where I'm reminded that the country wants to forget me. It keeps saying that, "This is the most important story, the arrival of the First Fleet is the most important story that defines our nation." And I know it is different than that. I reckon that as Australians, we have a real identity problem. We think that we're young and scrappy and we're lucky. Where in fact, we should be e...lders on the world stage. We have the oldest living culture on earth and it is here in this landscape and the more we think that we can learn from Indigenous Australia rather than thinking of it as a deficit model then I think we'll have an Australia Day that is more important and embraced by everyone. I reckon we spend a lot of energy saying, "Change the date. Change the date." When in fact the energy needs to be change the minds and hearts of Australians. Let's have a voice to parliament. Let's talk about treaty. Let's talk about sovereignty. Let's make permanent changes that actually help us all grow as Australians. We need to build some identity that is from deep within and it starts with our relationship with this country, our relationship with the First Peoples and then this idea of how we can work together to make structural change and not just the window dressing. 19.01.2022 A timely book from the former Australian Ambassador to the People's Republic of China. Disruption has blown the old world apart. The rise of China, Trump's America First policies, division within Europe and successful defiance by authoritarian states are affecting the shape of the emerging new order. Human rights, rule of law, free media and longstanding global institutions all seem set to be weakened. Autocracies are exercising greater control over world affairs. Australia w...ill need to engage heightened levels of diplomacy to forge relations with countries of opposing principles. It will need to be agile in pursuing a realistic foreign policy agenda. China's Grand Strategy and Australia's Future in the New Global Order contains answers for how Australia must position itself for this possibly dystopian future. 18.01.2022 A bright new reading light is a joy! And The Fogging is a bright spot in my reading at the moment as it takes me inside a couples life & relationship. Clara & Tom are in Bali (remember holidays?) and Toms battle with anxiety has resurfaced. Then the fogging happens. No - its not a swing into horror. The fogging is the smoke/pesticide fumigation done on resort grounds and it provokes alarm in Clara & her new holiday friend Madeleine leading to relationship trouble between Tom & Clara. Very sure-footed writing that is a pleasure to read. 18.01.2022 This beautifully written story not only traces the history of growing up on the north shore but the gradual evolution of the food and fashion scene in Sydney in the 70s and 80s. It encompasses many areas of day to day struggles within families that were not discussed then and which are, sadly, still occurring today. An engrossing read, it will evoke many nostalgic memories of Sydney in the 6os, 70s and 80s. Bad Apple Press

17.01.2022 ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- Set in the Grampian region of Victoria, and stretching over four decades, this tells the story of Lawrence and Paul. Their father died in the war, and their mother, who is distant and strict but not unloving, works hard to provide for them. When her long-lost brother comes to stay, the boys react differently. Lawrie, the oldest and gifted at art, basks in the attention of the older man, but Paul, who has always looked up to Lawrie, doesn't need a... father figure and is suspicious of the uncle and his motives. When an unspeakable act occurs, Lawrie falls ill, develops a debilitating stammer and becomes socially isolated, finding solace in his painting. It isn't until 40 years later, when a family moves into the neighbouring farmhouse and upends his solitary existence, that Lawrie makes a friend of 10 yo David - and an enemy of his older sister... A powerful, wrenching and unforgettable novel of damage and redemption, of seeing the world as no one else does, of brotherly love and tolerance, and of the loneliness of a man whose childhood was stolen from him, but who never learnt to become an adult. Lindy Jones

15.01.2022 Bill Phippen continues his engaging and informative work on some of Australia's rail engineering history. Here Phippen looks in detail at the 54 NSW Railway bridges which were more than just basic girders. These were remarkable examples of railway engineering, both in design and construction, and were essential elements in the railways opening up New South Wales. A book for anyone with an interest in railways, engineering heritage, structures and timber engineering.

12.01.2022 'Write what you know' is the advice often given to authors and the new novel from Ceridwen Dovey draws on a fair bit of truth with which to weave life into her fiction. It is true that Dovey attended Harvard. It is true that Natalie Portman and Jared Kushner were classmates... ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- Five students - Jules, a famous actress, Mariam and Rowan who married young, Eloise, coping with her much younger wife’s radical politics and Jomo, a businessman - return t...o Harvard for their 15th class reunion. Friendship, marriage and families are all tested, and loyalties questioned, when a former classmate, the son of the US President, is found dead... A subtle and moving inquiry into what happens when the promise of youth is silenced by the practicalities of middle age. Dovey has an acute eye for detail, immersing us in the lives of her protagonists. Thoughtful and insightful. 12.01.2022 In last summer's devastating fires, Kangaroo Island lost half of its koala population, with many more left injured and starving. When Kailas Wild - arborist by trade and conservationist at heart - heard that there were injured koalas on Kangaroo Island who could only be reached by a tree climber, he drove 1500 kms to volunteer. This is the inspiring and sometimes confronting story of someone who went to help and ended up a koala dad.

07.01.2022 Jimmy Barnes is a wonderful study of a life evolving. Hearing him say that with his first book he didn’t want to do the expected ‘tell all’ showed a maturity, an elegance in rejecting gossip. 04.01.2022 General Sir Peter Cosgrove's memoir, 'You Shouldn't Have Joined...', is a true reflection of the man himself, filled with intelligence, forthrightness, compassion and a brilliant eye for a telling anecdote. General Sir Peter Cosgrove AK AC (Mil) CVO MC (Retd) is one of Australia's most significant public figures. As a soldier he saw action in Vietnam, winning the Military Cross, and rose to the very top of his profession, becoming Chief of the Defence Force. Soon after his re...tirement from the Army, he was invited to take charge of the huge relief and rebuilding operation in Queensland after the devastation of Cyclone Larry. In 2014, Cosgrove became Australia's Governor-General. As Governor-General he travelled far and wide, supporting Australians in times of crisis, sadness, joy or celebration, representing us on the world stage with humour, intelligence and a force of personal magnetism that was felt by everyone from prime ministers to presidents.

02.01.2022 In the heady days after 1945, the authority of the United States was unrivalled. But 75 years later, its influence has already diminished. The world has now entered a post-American era defined by the rise of Asia and the return of China, as much as by the decline of the United States. This book is a short history of that decline as historian Michael Pembroke offers a fresh take on the USA's vast influence and asks whether it is still a force for good. Hardie Grant Books
