19.01.2022 WANT TO HELP YOUR DOG LIVE LONGER? ADD BROCCOLI TO THEIR DIET! Several studies show the sulforaphane found in broccoli destroys cancer cells and/or damaged ce...lls in dogs. This process alone will help extend their lives! Whether you chop it raw, ferment it, steam it or boil it, start by adding a 1/4 teaspoon per 10lbs of body weight mixed in their bowl. Feed your carnivores some broccoli, my fellow pet parents, and here’s to your pet’s health! http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/vco.12212/full https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21793331 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16013542 - Rodney Habib

14.01.2022 As the warmer months approach, we will begin to see more snake activity; they can be found catching the sun in the same places we love to take our dogs: especia...lly near water sources, and thick grasses and shrubbery. It is important to keep our dogs on leashes and under close supervision in these areas to minimise the risk of snake bite. There are three species of snakes in Tasmania, all of which are venomous. The Tiger snake, White-lipped snake, and the Copperhead. It can take anywhere from 15 minutes to 6 hours for the dog to become affected by venom. Do not "wait and see" if your pet displays symptoms, early treatment is key to survival! Puncture marks may not be visible due to your dogs hair and skin colouring. SNAKE BITE SYMPTOMS TO LOOK OUT FOR: - Sudden weakness or collapse - Drooling, shaking or twitching of muscles - Paralysis of limbs - Difficulty breathing - Pain or distress: groaning, yelping, panting etc - Loss of bladder/bowel control or blood in the urine - Vomiting - Dialated pupils or difficulty blinking - Bleeding of puncture wound or swelling of the bitten area Most vets carry an anti-venom serum it is vital that you take your dog to the CLOSEST vet available for immediate treatment. If possible, try to call them first so they can prepare for your arrival. Do not try to catch the snake that has bitten your pet they are fatal to humans too! WHAT TO DO IF YOU SUSPECT SNAKE BITE - Try to keep your dog quiet and calm; this helps to slow the venom speading throughout the body - Do not allow your pet to walk, it is important to help keep their heart rate low - If possible, call your nearest vet clinic so they can prepare for your arrival - If you know where your pet has been bitten, immobilise the area and try to keep it lower than the heart - Do not attempt to suck the venom from the bite or cut the bitten area If you suspect a snake bite after hours, take your dog to AHVEC - After Hours Veterinary Emergency Centre: 1300 302 912 - 37 Derwent Park Road, MOONAH
14.01.2022 Dogs are way better than rocks!
13.01.2022 WARNING!!! DO NOT GIVE THESE SO-CALLED "TREATS" TO YOUR DOGS!!! THEY CAN POTENTIALLY KILL THEM!! Just a little warning regarding the Xmas treats many stor...es are now starting to stock for dogs at Xmas. Many of these so called treats end up with the dog "enjoying" some time in a veterinary surgery over Christmas. The vast majority of these rawhide products and treats come from China. The chews are made from cattle or horse hides and their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulphide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white "pure" look and remove the rancid smell. Now comes the pretty festive colours and the glue to form cute shapes. On testing, these chews have shown traces of arsenic, mercury, chromium and formaldehyde. If that wasn't bad enough, they regularly cause intestinal blockages, poisoning from chemical residue and choking. The chews go slippery when wet and are near impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog. Leave them in the shop where they belong or if some well meaning person buys them for your dog put them safely away for later, then dispatch in the bin! Please be safe with your dogs! 12.01.2022 ABC for PAWS will provide a taxi service in coming weeks. It will provide a ride if you dont have one. Maybe you dont have transport or you have work commitments and cant get to the vets for treatment, check up or perhaps a non urgent injury. Maybe you want to just get out to the park. The wagon has 2 dog seat belts and anchor points in the boot. Fees apply for fuel and my time pending location. Dogs will not be permitted to travel without a seat belt, caged birds and cats also welcome as long as they are in a carrier. Based in latrobe (north west tas). If you do happen to need urgent help in the meantime please get in touch
12.01.2022 ARE YOU CONSIDERING ADOPTING A NEW PET? Before adopting you must ask yourself the following questions: Can I provide an animal with a permanent and safe home fo...r the duration of their life? This may be up to 17 years. Will I be able to provide them with the company and attention they need? If I have other animals, how would they feel if I brought home a new animal? Can I realistically afford the on-going costs associated with caring for an animal? This includes veterinary treatment, quality food and litter. How does my family/partner/flatmate feel about living with an animal? Do any of them have allergies or phobias? Would they mind an animal being indoors (some people feel strongly about not letting animals inside)? If renting, will my landlord allow animals? Can I guarantee that when I move I will prioritise finding a home that will allow me to have my animals, even if this home is not my first choice, or takes longer to find? Do I plan on traveling? If so, can I find a responsible adult to look after an animal? Can I afford boarding? Pets are for life - not just a few days, weeks, or a couple of months.
11.01.2022 This is my boy max he was around 1 year old in this photo, when i taught him to hold an empty basket and then with real uncooked eggs in it. I got him at 5 weeks of age, i raised him and he is now 4 1/2 years. He knows alot through the time and efforts i have invested with him and i am proud of what i have achieved with him.

02.01.2022 PARALYSIS TICK WARNING As the weather starts to warm up we notice a large increase in the amount of ticks found on your pets Today Buster came in to see ...us to have a paralysis tick removed from his ear Surprisingly this is the second paralysis tick we have seen in the past week. We would like to remind all of our clients that paralysis ticks are about, and to check that your pet is up to date with their flea and tick treatment. Prevention is much easier than treatment of tick paralysis and definitely less scary. Luckily Busters owner found the tick before he showed any signs of tick paralysis, and he was able to be treated with a tick prevention. Usually symptoms of tick paralysis show after the tick has dropped off, symptoms of tick paralysis include: - Change to bark or meow - Coughing - Heavy breathing - Vomiting - Wobbly legs, usually but not always starting at the back end - Collapse - Heavy salivation If your pet shows signs of tick paralysis or you have found what you think is a paralysis tick on your pet, we recommend calling your vet ASAP.
