25.01.2022 Handwriting Tip! Used this fantastic Sentence Opener resource from Twinkl Resources in a handwriting session earlier this month. Great little visual aid to explore different words and phrases that can be used to start sentences.

25.01.2022 Absolutely beautiful visual to explain co-regulation

25.01.2022 MOTOR OVERFLOW refers to involuntary movement in a body part not involved in a voluntary motor action. For example, you might notice a baby banging an object wi...th one hand, and their other hand mirroring the action (even though its empty); a child opening and closing their mouth as their hand opens and closes scissors, or a child sticking their tongue out while concentrating on writing. This overflow is often present in typically-developing children (and sometimes adults!) and is observable during new tasks or those that require a lot of thought and concentration. Research into the neurological factors underlying motor overflow in children is lacking, so were not sure why it happens. If you notice your child displaying motor overflow during a particular task, its not a cause for concern. However it is a good indication that the task is not yet automatic, and still requires conscious thought, therefore is worth practising. #motoroverflow #mirroredmovements #extraneousmovements #associatedmovements #motorplanning #coordination #learningnewskills #movementskills #DCD #ADHD #dyspraxia #occupationaltherapy #otforkids #kidsot #perthkids #kidsofperth #perthteacher #occupationaltherapist See more

23.01.2022 An amazing news story highlighting the resilience of William and the efforts of the rescue team to individualise the search to find him. Singing used in replacement of shouting, barbecue smells and locals asked to play Thomas the Tank Engine music

23.01.2022 Trialling different pencil grips - in this session we used the HandiWriter handwriting Tool to move towards a more functional grasp for writing and drawing. The top elastic pulls the pencil back into the webspace whilst a small item is held in the palm of the hand (see second picture). Pencil grips are often used as a temporary measure to support the child who may not have sufficient fine motor strength to hold the pencil in a functional grasp. There are pros and cons to all pencils grips so its important to trial a few to find one thats effective and comfortable for the child.

22.01.2022 Food for thought...something we as adults often still do when others are talking to us. You might find yourself using these little phrases more often particularly as we become more tired, stressed or overwhelmed. Its important to try and be patient when your hear your child saying this and provide them with time to process the information you have given them

06.01.2022 Fine Motor Skills involve the smaller muscles found in the hands and fingers and refer to the skills that are required by a child to hold and manipulate objects. This is often seen when the child is pinching, grasping or holding items, and is required to perform tasks such as using pencils (e.g. colouring and writing), cutting, holding cutlery and doing up buttons. If you would like any more information or support around fine motor skill development for your child, feel free ...to send us an enquiry on www.abctherapy.com.au or and email on [email protected] Looking forward to hearing from you

03.01.2022 Re-frame your thinking! As therapists, we are often asked to identify potential barriers and challenges which exist in a persons life, however whats even more important, is to be able to also look at the persons strengths! Focusing on the positive attributes of the person and using these, can assist with increasing motivation, engagement and supporting a child to achieve their goals!

03.01.2022 When our children are behaving in not-so-adorable ways, their behaviour might be messy and confusing and wildly maddening, but it will never be about a bad chil...d. It will be about a well-intended, good hearted child who is being driven by something we cant see - a need, feeling, thought, or other internal experience. This doesnt mean no boundaries. It means there are lessons for them to learn, and its okay if it takes time for them to learn them. These lessons will happen in a more enduring, meaningful way if there is safe space for them to be learned, gentle expectations that our children are capable of learning them, and the influence of a loving adult to guide the way. As the important big people in their lives, our challenge is to avoid taking their behaviour personally. This can be so hard - but its so important - but so hard! If we can do this, we can then approach them with curious eyes, an open mind, and an open heart. We can bring ourselves closer to them and that precious space beside them, inside their world. Then, we can learn what we need to learn, so they can too. We can widen the way to us, and expand our capacity to influence them towards choices that work better for them. This might take time, but we have plenty of it - years actually. There are no shortcuts and there is no hurry. And dont worry about what the rest of the world might be thinking when the bumps get bumpy - (which they often do, in public). You have been charged with the privileged role of building a small human into an adult, and you can take all the time you need. A young brain will respond to needs, thoughts and feelings in primitive, instinctive ways until it learns a new way. Our job as parents and the important adults in their lives isnt to make our children behave, but to give them the space, gentle expectations, patience, love and influence to guide them so that they can learn how to do this (behave) for themselves. They have the right to get it wrong as many times as it takes. They will need different things, at different times, in different ways - and there is no express lane. This is why it is a magnificent adventure for all of us.

03.01.2022 A great guide to using controlled choices with children

03.01.2022 Our brains all work differently

01.01.2022 The Vestibular System is an important part of our sensory system, being responsible for providing information to the brain about motion, head position and spatial awareness. By doing this, it assists with helping us to maintain balance, maintain posture, and stabilise both our head and body during movement

01.01.2022 Received this lovely package in the mail from Kaiko Fidgets today! It can be tough to find fidgets for older children, teens and adults but they have some fantastic designs to choose from. Definitely looking forward to using this one! Fidgets have many uses but most commonly assist with self-regulation as well as helping to increase attention and concentration!

01.01.2022 The Power of Puzzles! Puzzles are fantastic to encorporate into sessions as well as a great activity for kids to do with family as they target a whole range of skills. Some of the key skills puzzles may assist with developing are: 1. Topic specific information - in the case below we were working on letter recognition... 2. Attention and concentration 3. Fine motor skills 4. Spatial awareness 5. Hand-eye coordination 6. Shape recognition 7. Memory 8. Problem solving skills 9. Language 10. Self esteem 11.
