25.01.2022 #BREAKING: Labor and the Greens are predicted to win the ACT election. ABC election analyst Antony Green has called the result with nearly two thirds of the vote counted. It's likely there'll be at least 11 Labor and 2 Greens which takes them to 13 seats enough to form government.... The Liberals have at least 8 seats but it doesn't appear there is any path to government.

24.01.2022 "We've had an extraordinary series of challenges thrown at us, as a city and as a community, and we've got through it because we've worked together." Andrew Barr has declared a Labor victory in the ACT. He paid tribute to supporters, colleagues, family, and his opponents, saying democracies only work with a strong opposition.... Negotiations will now start with the Greens to see how a potential government will be formed. The current count has 11 Labor, 8 Liberal, 3 greens, and 3 seats in doubt. 21.01.2022 Where are the pollen hot spots around Canberra? Imported oaks, birches and other introduced trees in older suburbs produce large pollen loads and wear a lot of the blame for the city's particularly bad hay fever seasons. But Professor Simon Haberle, from the ANU's pollen monitoring program, says Canberra's hay fever seasons are made worse because of the region's grass types, which many people are allergic to. ... "We have quite a lot of grass, particularly to the north-west and north and east of us, and people are quite allergic to those different grass types, particularly rye grass, which is the strongest allergy grass we've got in our region".

21.01.2022 Australian National University researchers fear there are less than 300 swift parrots left in the wild. Swift parrots live a nomadic lifestyle which means they’re hard to track. For the first time, researchers used DNA extracted from blood and feather samples to estimate the population size of the swift parrot. ... Lead researcher Dr George Olah says the newest swift parrot estimates are much lower than previous numbers. This study has painted a much clearer, and starker picture of how few of these birds are currently left in the wild, Dr Olah says. : Dejan Stojanovic

19.01.2022 The Federal Government is removing the cap on public servants' annual pay rises. For years, the Government has blocked its workplaces from offering staff pay rises worth more than 2% a year, but this limit is now gone. Instead, the Government has replaced it with a new rule: public servants' maximum wage rises will be tied to the average increase in private sector remuneration. ... The Government has also announced it will review bonuses paid to public service executives.

17.01.2022 An Australian National University study has found cancer is more of a ‘chronic disease’ rather than a death sentence because survival rates have improved. The study found people living with the most common cancers, like breast and bowel cancer, reported a similar quality of life to those who don’t have cancer. Lead Professor Emily Banks says some people still view cancer as a death sentence when that's not always the case.... We need to rethink cancer, over two thirds of people with cancer are living five years or more so this work is part of shifting our thinking of cancer as a chronic disease and what this study really shows is the diversity of experiences of cancer. Professor Banks says although the findings are positive, there are still many survivors suffering.
