They will need to have a digital system to record patrons' names and contact details or they will face hefty fines. The state government QR code captures the business name and address, as well as customers' contact details and is stored for 28 days. ... Those that do not have a QR system are encouraged to record customers details with a digital device.

23.01.2022 RESIDENT TREATED FOR SMOKE INHALATION AFTER KITCHEN FIRE IN ORANGE Fire fighters were called to a block of units on Margaret Street just before 8am after reports of a fire. It was contained to the room of origin and the resident evacuated before the blaze was extinguished.... The resident was treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation. A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesperson said "it was important the community remembered to keep looking when cooking". "If your cooking catches fire never use water to put out a fat or oil fire, turn off the stove if it is safe to do so and call Triple Zero."

21.01.2022 A permanent palliative care unit is set to be established in the Orange Hospital. The Western Local Health District has agreed to open the suite on the ground floor of the hospital after discussions with the lobby group, Push for Palliative. It will offer two beds, with the capacity for more if they are needed.... The LHD says it is hoping to build the unit at the same time as a cancer haematology unit. The Shooters, Fishers and Farmers MP, Philip Donato, alongwith members of the Western LHD and lobby group, Push for Palliative.

20.01.2022 STATE PROTECTION SECURED FOR 'THE DRIP' LANDS Protection has been secured for a rock formation of Aboriginal significance near Mudgee. The NSW Government has announced 33 hectares, which are home to 'The Drip', have been compulsory acquired from mining company Moolarben Coal.... The Energy and Environment Minister Matt Kean said the move will allow the lands to be reserved as part of the National Park estate. The area is home to 30 bird species including the powerful owl. It was officially added to the Goulburn River National Park in 2015, with the staged acquisition taking place during the last five years. The Mudgee District Environment Group said it welcomes the decision but is asking that all mining activity be excluded from the area. "Mining and exploration activities risks the groundwater system that feeds The Drip and the Goulburn River and the stability of sandstone cliffs along this much-loved river corridor," the MDEG said in a statement.

16.01.2022 MAN CHARGED OVER MURDER OF BATHURST MAN A 38-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a homeless man in the state's Central West five years ago. He was arrested in Bathurst this morning and charged with the murder of 68-year-old Reginald Mullaly, who was found dead under a bridge in the city in September 2015.... The man was refused bail in the Bathurst Local Court earlier today and will re-appear tomorrow.

14.01.2022 NEW SYDNEY FERRIES TO FEATURE NAMES OF CENTRAL WEST ICONS The names of ten new Sydney River Class ferries have been revealed, with one of the first four to be named after former Koorawatha resident Olive Cotton. The photographer was born on Sydney's Northern Beaches but later lived on a farm near the village.... Her daugher Sally McInerney said her mother always loved the sea, despite spending much of her life away from it. Olive’s family is sure that she would have been surprised, gently amused and extremely appreciative at being included in the excellent company of the Sydney Ferries fleet," she said. A ferry will also be named after Carcoar-born sporting legend Kurt Fearnley.

Rural Crime officers issued a warning yesterday, saying motorists are stopping on blind corners to photograph the crops and in some cases are entering private property.... The Rural Crime Coordinator, Detective Chief Inspector Cameron Whiteside, says people shouldn't risk their lives for the perfect picture. "We don't want to be the fun police but we really want everyone ... to enjoy yourself but get home safely. "It's just not a good thing to be pulling up on the side of the road and other motorists are travelling next to you.: "We've even had people pull over in dangerous situations and started to have lunch in that area," he said.

11.01.2022 DRAFT MANAGEMENT PLANS FOR LACHLAN AND MACQUARIE-CASTLEREAGH RIVER SYSTEMS Splitting Lake Cargelligo into three to reduce evaporation and the introduction of an Aboriginal River Ranger program have been suggested in draft management plans for the Lachlan and Macquarie-Castlereagh rivers. The draft plans include more than 40 options for each river to help protect the environment, improve affordability and deliver and manage water for communities.... Suggestions for the Lachlan include separating Lake Cargelligo into three waterways to reduce evaporation losses. A pipeline from Burrendong Dam to Nyngan, either entirely or in sections, has been put forward in the Macquarie-Castlereagh draft plan. Many of the options have not been costed and the plans say that while some strategies could improve water reliability for industry, they may have negative environmental impacts. The plans are on exhibition for public comment until November.

07.01.2022 LOCUST WARNING AS CONDITIONS IMPROVE Farmers in the central west are being urged to keep an eye out for locusts. Local Land Services says bumper crops and increased grass cover will make spring hatchlings harder to spot.... The Senior Biosecurity Officer Alicia Whiley says early detection is the key to controlling outbreaks. She says the females like to lay in areas of compacted soil, like along roadways next to crops and ridges such as dam banks. "When they first emerge they're almost white grasshoppers that pop out of the ground," she says. "And then they start marching and eating pasture as they march forward. "Another good indication is flocks of ibis or birds in a paddock; they love to feed on locusts," Ms Whiley says.

07.01.2022 As a twister tore through the Central Tablelands two weeks ago, Scott McKinnon saw a "scene out of the Wizard of Oz." His tiny Pomeranian, along with some of the neighbour's cows, were spinning about 20 metres up in the air. Pom Pom has returned home from the vet after getting sucked up in the twister.

Police say the Central Coast woman was found hiding in a roof cavity at a home in Yass this morning, after allegedly threatening a service station attendant with a knife on Saturday night.... She's accused of stealing cash and cigarettes, before fleeing on foot. The woman was refused bail to face the Goulburn Local Court tomorrow.

06.01.2022 Water New South Wales says it appears manganese could be the cause of discoloured water in the Lithgow district. Samples have been taken showing increased levels of the substance. Residents started reporting discoloured water a few weeks ago after repairs were carried out on a broken pipe in the Fish River system near Rydal.... The spokesman Tony Webber from Water NSW said although the water is technically safe to drink, it is not recommended if it is discoloured. "There's no issue with the water meeting Australian drinking water guidelines but there is some discolouration but we're encouraging people to..is that's a lingering problem to contact Lithgow council and arrange alternative supply."

06.01.2022 New Covid-19 case numbers in the central west: 14 new cases in Western NSW Local Health District: 8 Walgett, 2 Wellington, 2 Collarenebri 1 Orange, 1 Bathurst 1 new case in Lithgow No new cases in Southern NSW Local Health District... NSW recorded 444 new locally acquired COVID-19 infections in the 24 hours to 8:00pm yesterday. There were 105,508 tests conducted. Four people died with COVID-19 in the reporting period. Three men and one woman, aged in their 60s and 70s. NSW first dose vaccination rate is at 90.8%, second dose at 75.2 % of population aged 16+.

05.01.2022 HAVE YOU SEEN ANY SUPERB PARROTS? Birdwatchers are being asked to look out for superb parrot nests to assist a study into the animal’s ecology. Conservation ecologist McLean Cobden from the Australian National University is part of an effort to manage the vulnerable species and secure their future.... He said superb parrots rely on hollow-bearing trees throughout the NSW South West Slopes, Central West and Riverina regions. The removal of those trees certainly threatens their existence and they also need adequate foraging ground in those areas as well, he said. Mr Cobden said he aimed to survey and track the parrots and requested people to report sightings to difficultbirds.com Any sighting is always useful, particularly at this time of year during the breeding season.

05.01.2022 SEVENTH PERSON ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH MURDER OF BANDIDOS PRESIDENT A 39-year-old man, arrested in Orange yesterday afternoon, is the seventh person arrested in connection with the murder of Bandidos Central West president Shane de Britt. Mr de Britt was found with a gunshot wound to his head on a property at Eurimbla, 50km south of Wellington, in January.... Five men and one woman remain before the courts over their alleged involvement. The man was charged with murder and will appear at the Orange Local Court today. #BREAKING

03.01.2022 NEW DESIGN FOR THE LAKE CARGELLIGO WATER TOWER It's the second time a plan has been unveiled to paint the tower, after a 14 metre high mural of a space shuttle was put on hold due to widespread public backlash. The proponents behind that attempt withdrew it soon after, and now a new committee has come forward with an application for a different design. ... This group says it's approached 'Heesco', who's the artist behind the space shuttle, who has also painted large-scale works on silos at Grenfell and Weethalle. Community consultation will be carried out, and the committee says Heesco will be asked to produce three sketches so the most popular can be chosen for the tower. 03.01.2022 The Bathurst hospital is set to receive an MRI machine with $4 million announced by the New South Wales Government. More than 200 patients a year are transferred to Orange and the city's private hospital to receive MRI scans. State Member for Bathurst, Paul Toole, says the money will be used to purchase the machine and build an appropriate space in the hospital. ... This will allow more local residents to receive potentially life-saving diagnosis and treatment at Bathurst Hospital.
