14.01.2022 Art has been used as a therapy for people with disabilities for many years. As a creative therapy, art and craft classes encourage imagination and inventiveness, but they can be useful as physical therapy too; for example, for developing muscle strength and fine motor skills. Art classes are also important social occasions, helping disabled people to make new friends and build relationships in a safe and supported environment. We mustn’t forget the value of art to the community too: public spaces and run-down areas can really benefit from beautiful paintings and sculptures created by disabled people.

13.01.2022 Animals, like assistance dogs, have shared bonds with disabled people for many years and can be a wonderful source of companionship. Like art, animals can also be therapeutic for many disabled people. Opportunities exist for people with disabilities to take part in horse-riding therapy, farm animal petting sessions and even llama walks!
10.01.2022 Community and group activities for disabled people Community projects and group activities can help participants to build relationships, learn new skills and improve confidence. They are important for avoiding social isolation and to improve physical and mental health especially so for people with disabilities who can often suffer disproportionately with these challenges. People with disabilities are often on the receiving end of community and group projects sensory gardens, wheelchair access and charitable fundraising events, for example but they also have much to gain by being involved in activities as participants too.

06.01.2022 The benefits of exercise on health are well documented, but physical activity is especially important for disabled people, who can suffer from physical conditions like obesity, arthritis and chronic pain, but also from mental health issues like depression too. Whether a solo sport like swimming or running, or a team sport like cricket or netball, people with disabilities can get involved in all kinds of sporting activities and there are opportunities for coaching, refereeing and volunteering too.

01.01.2022 #SayTheWord: Why I'm reclaiming the word 'disabled' There has been a push in recent years to adopt person first language, instead of saying disabled person one should say "person with a disability", to remind us that a person with a disability is a person first and someone with a disability second. Language holds power, the power to transform ideas and attitudes. It shapes how you see yourself and the world. Words like disabled are not just words, they hold an entire history ...of struggle for social justice and provides connection to others experiencing the same marginality. Trong nhng nm gn ây, thay vì nói ngi khuyt tt, ngi ta nên nói "ngi khuyt tt", nhc nh chúng ta rng ngi khuyt tt là ngi u tiên và ngi khuyt tt th hai. Ngôn ng nm gi sc mnh, sc mnh chuyn i ý tng và thái . Nó nh hình cách bn nhìn nhn bn thân và th gii. Nhng t nh khuyt tt không ch là li nói, chúng còn cha ng c mt lch s u tranh cho công bng xã hi và mang n s kt ni vi nhng ngi khác ang tri qua cùng cnh ng.
