25.01.2022 I love getting these types of photos from owners! I did a few sessions with this family to help with integrating the dog and cat into the same household. It was a slow and well managed process, and respect and safety for both animals was paramount. However I'd call this a success!

25.01.2022 Our final puppy preschool of the year! This year we had a bit of a restructure of our classes. Due to covid restrictions we haven't been able to run classes with the staff at the Curtin Vet Clinic. Instead we finished the year off running classes in Duffy. Next year we will be returning to taking classes at the vet clinic but will also run in Duffy (dates to be confirmed). Lesley who ran classes during my maternity leave will also continue to take classes. Looking forward to meeting many new pups in 2021!

24.01.2022 Ever wondered why your dog may react to other dogs on lead but not off?

24.01.2022 Some absolutely amazing training by the wonderful John Sam of Canberra Nosework. This type of husbandry training assist in not only improving your dog's welfare but builds so much trust in their relationship with you (and your vet!) as well.

24.01.2022 I love being able to go on the 'puppy journey' with so many families and watching their pups grow. I met Lola when she was only about 10 weeks. She's now just turned 1 and has grown into an absolutely beautiful dog

23.01.2022 The keenest of beans! This little one recently moved into an apartment block. She's adjust well but does find being confronted in the corridors scary. We're helping teach her some new 'coping strategies' for dealing with scary strangers lurking around corners!

23.01.2022 Happy International Dog Day! I'm extremely lucky to be able to work with a huge variety of dogs but also their dedicated owners.

23.01.2022 Just hanging out practicing some calm engagement at the local shops. To passes by it probably didn't look like we were doing much, simply waiting until engagement was offered then rewarding it.

21.01.2022 Someone's resting on the job! Priestly is working on some body awareness. This will help him learn to jump (on some steps) and into the car.

21.01.2022 If you are interested in dog (or horse) behaviour here are a few fantastic podcasts! https://illis.se/en/podcasts-2020/

19.01.2022 There have been some changes to the accreditation process of assistance dogs in the ACT. I have been approved to perform Public Access Tests here in the ACT, however will not be offering this service until after my maternity leave ends in Janaury.

19.01.2022 This little cutie will soon be starting our Puppy Preschool classes! We run classes for both young puppies and adolescent dogs.

19.01.2022 Some of our gorgeous pups who have just finished Puppy Preschool

17.01.2022 This is the result of some very hard work! Introducing a second dog to a household does not always go smoothly. Dogs are individuals with individual personalities and don't always get along straight away (some may never be compatible). When I first met these two there was some definit tension. However due to hard work, persistence and commitment by their owners, they are now good buddies!

17.01.2022 This little guy has had a rough time recently, his doggy companion recently passed away. This lose has caused him a lot of anxiety which has greatly effected his behaviour. Luckily his owners have been very aware of this and are trying to make him feel more relaxed

16.01.2022 A week of Shelties! I'm not complaining! These little pocket rockets are loads of fun

15.01.2022 The ever so regal greyhound! This lovely lady was doing really well at settling into suburban life until she had a number of encounters with off lead dogs rushing up to her. Although the dogs were "friendly" she still got quite a scare and now can be reactive when dogs come towards her. Just because a dog is friendly is not an excuse to let it approach others. Even the friendliest dog may not be welcome in another dogs personal space! As dog owners we should be responsible for not only looking after our dogs but making sure their behaviour does not affect others.

14.01.2022 Today we travelled to Batemans Bay to perform a few MindDog public access tests, including for this team. This is the third test I have done for this team (each time they've passed easily) and it's been great being part of their journey.

14.01.2022 A great reminder about giving new dogs time to decompress.

10.01.2022 Another example of assistance dogs coming in all shapes and sizes! Little Belle passed her Public Access Test today #minddog #assistancedog

09.01.2022 Gorgeous Penny is a Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier. This breed originated in Ireland and was original designed as a versatile farm dog. They are one of the bigger terriers, usually weighing between 14 and 18 kilograms. They are a non-shedding breed so need plenty of grooming!

09.01.2022 I cried a little when I received this photo! Here's Benji the MindDog visiting his owner during a recent hospital stay. Benji was adopted from the RSPCA and then entered the MindDog Assistance Dog program with his owner. They are best friends and Benji has helped his owner through the bushfires, covid isolation and now a hospital stay. Benji you are a little champion!

09.01.2022 Congratulations to one of Canberra's newest Assistance Dog teams! This team has just been assessed under the new ACT assistance dog framework (which was implemented in July). I've assisted with the training of this team for a while now so to remain unbiased another trainer, Izabela from Wooft completed the Public Access Test today. I could not be more proud of the effort put in by the team!

07.01.2022 Beagles are a super sweet breed but they aren't for everyone. They often require loads of mental stimulation, and people can underestimate this. This gorgeous boy took a while to find his 'forever' home but now he has and he's a much loved member of their family.

07.01.2022 Look at that snoot! Dogs with long muzzles (longer skulls than is proportional to the width) are called dolichocephalic. This dolichocephalic dog is unbelievably handsome

06.01.2022 "Tuck in". This is a cue we teach Assistance Dogs to lessen the chances of them being injured while working in public. Some dogs, especially small ones, could easily be knocked by a trolley while their owner stops to look at something or to pay. This behaviour gets them 'out if the way'

06.01.2022 The beautiful Charlee has been having a tough time with all the storms lately. If you have a dog who finds storms stressful, remember that even after the storm ends their stress hormones may still be elevated. After a stressful event, cortisol levels in dogs may stay heightened for up to 72hours! Try to ensure you dog has a quite, stressfree couple of days after storms or other seriously stressful events.

06.01.2022 This handsome devil can make doggy friends easily when off lead but gets a little nervous if he meets them while he's on. This is not unusual, putting a lead on can take away a dog's opportunity to avoid something it's worried by (I'm not advocating walking your dog off lead). We're now working to build his confidence in situations where he may come across other dogs on walks.

06.01.2022 One of the many things I love about greyhounds is the colour variation they come in. Depending on where you are in the world the number of recognised colours vary (some countries recognise as many as 18 different coat colours) but consistently and none are actually known as grey! Show me your pretty greys!

05.01.2022 A lovely weekend walk! Yesterday I was walking my dog when a boy (probably about 11 years old) stopped me to say "hi" to my dog. He also warned me that there was an off-lead dog up ahead and that it may run up to my dog. It was so great to see a child show awareness of dogs and identify that my dog may not want another running up to him. It's always great to see people displaying a responsible attitude towards animals but doubly so when it's a child. To make my walk even more pleasant, when I got close to the owner of the dog, the owner called it to him and held it until I had passed :)

05.01.2022 Puppy Preschool classes starting Saturday! We still have limited places available in Puppy Preschool classes starting this Saturday. Classes are run in Duffy at 10am for 4 weeks. The instructor is a fully qualified behavioural trainer. For more information or to make a booking call please send an email to [email protected]

04.01.2022 We're taking a break! I am now on maternity leave so will not be taking new clients until mid-December. If you are looking for a trainer, I would recommend you look at the Pet Professional Guild website: https://www.ppgaustralia.net.au/Member-Search If you are a returning client or would like to know about our Puppy Preschool or adolescent classes, please email me and I will get back to you at the earliest convenience. I do have a fill-in instructor for both classes and returning clients

02.01.2022 We could not be more proud of Bentley! We worked with Bentley to help prepare him for his therapy dog training and assessment. Bentley recently passed assessment and is now a Therapy Dog (with Therapy Dogs Australia) and will be heading into the classroom with his owner. The amazing instructors at the Companion Dog Club also played a huge role in his training. #therapydogsaustralia @bentleyj_the_therapy_dog @actcompaniondogclub

02.01.2022 While I'm on leave our classes are still being run a qualified trainer. Here are a few of our recent graduates!

02.01.2022 We spent the morning kayaking. My kelpie had always enjoyed this but as she has gotten older, it's become more and more important to find things that keep her mentally stimulated that don't rely on her being too physically active. You'll notice she's wearing a life vest and we did make sure we mastered the skill of sitting in the kayak on land before taking her on water

02.01.2022 Doing an important job and looking super snazzy! Dave is sporting his new winter assistance dog jacket. This will keep him warm and comfortable while he is out and about with his owner. #MindDog @minddogau

02.01.2022 This boy (a white schaunzer!) is simply beautiful!

01.01.2022 Two of the cuties from our recent Puppy Preschool class! Our next round of Puppy Preschool starts August 1st and still has a couple of spots available. The class run in Duffy on a Saturday morning for 4 weeks and are run by a fully qualified trainer. Send us a message for more details!

01.01.2022 Do you have a new puppy? The amazing Kikopup has a fantastic compilation of puppy training videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dbzPoB7AKk

01.01.2022 Do you have a new family member? At this time of year getting into Puppy Preschool classes can be hard but early socialisation is so important! We will be running two socialisation sessions before Christmas for puppies up to 16 weeks of age. These sessions will cover some basic behaviour advice, socialisation and confidence building activities. If you would like any information please message us!
