25.01.2022 It's been a long, torturous road for cane growers who have suffered a prolonged period of depressed prices in a global market awash with subsidised Indian raw sugar. Now, claims of a 'blatant breach' of trade rules will be heard before an international court more than two and a half years after a complaint was lodged with the World Trade Organisation. Will the WTO framework finally deliver justice? Or will it be too little, too late for Aussie growers? READ THE FULL STORY HERE: https://www.abc.net.au//australian-vs-india-sugar/12935044

22.01.2022 What a terrifying moment Watch how suddenly nine-week-old puppy Jasper is grabbed by a carpet python in his backyard on the Sunshine Coast. Keep a close on the chilli bush in the centre of the video - the snake leaps out, latches on. and wraps itself around the dog on in the blink of an eye.... Owner Michelle and her 13-year-old daughter Mikayla helped wrestle the snake off Jasper. "If anyone else in our community has a little dog or puppy please be aware of what a snake is capable of doing," Michelle said. Thankfully both Jasper and the python are OK. "Jasper's great. The snake bit his ear but we treated it with some ointment and he’s still full of puppy energy and thankfully he’s still going out to do his business in the backyard without fear," Michelle said. It's VERY similar to another story we had earlier this week - 10-week old puppy Wally (also on the Sunshine Coast) was also attacked by a carpet python. 13.01.2022 GROWING UP IN THE BUSH LEADS TO LIFELONG LOVE OF NATURE Shipton's Flat may seem an unlikely spot to be considered an epicentre for Wet Tropics biodiversity. The rich, but short-lived, tin mining fields are the reason many flocked to the region in the late 1800s, including Lewis and Charlie Roberts' grandfather. For three generations, the Roberts family have been observing the animals and plants of the south-eastern part of Cape York Peninsula from a unique perspective: from ...within it. Today, the brothers still live in the bush dwelling their father built under mango trees that were planted on the property more than 100 years ago. The world-renowned naturalists, bushmen and graziers have continued to live off the land while attracting global scientific interest in previously unknown species. In fact, several species, such as the ground orchid, Cooktownia robersii and the lizard, Saproscincus lewisi, is named in honor of older brother, Lewis. They believe conservation efforts should focus more on protecting the open sclerophyll forest and grasslands, which are an important habitat for many endangered species. But they cite changes the fire regime, seasons and rainforest encroachment during their lifetime as ongoing challenges for the future. Lewis says it's why he'd like his family's property to continue as a 'self supporting reserve'. "We've made our living out of it and looked after the wildlife in the process so as far as I'm concerned it's kind of a cattle station and wildlife reserve together." His brother agrees and would like it to remain in the Roberts family. "It's been in the family for well over 100 years now so it'll have to keep going forever, won't it?," Charlie said. "They'll never get me to live in a town, definitely not. No." If you missed it, you can listen back to the full interview here: https://www.abc.net.au//lewis-and-charlie-roberts/12866628

03.01.2022 COULD LAKELAND BE POISED TO BE A WATERMELON AND PUMPKIN GROWING POWERHOUSE? Lakeland has long been one of Queensland’s ‘quiet achievers’. Growers expanded north and these days banana trees cover more than 3000 hectares.
