17.01.2022 Have you smelt smoke at your place this morning? Smoke from fires burning on K'Gari (Fraser Island) is blanketing the Gold Coast this morning. Bureau of Meteorology Senior Forecaster Kimber Wong says "we are expecting more smoke to be coming down from further north today".... There is a south easterly wind change expected tonight, however there are a few fires burning over the border in New South Wales so we may not see a reduction in smoke haze around the South East too soon. Firefighters are continuing to tackle the blaze, however northerly winds expected to pick up today which will make for challenging firefighting conditions. - Terry Tappa Teece

It's believed the fire started after an illegal campfire wasn't propertly extinguished and it's burnt through 52-thousand hectares. ... Water bombing operations are being restricted to the use of helicopters due to poor visibility caused by excessive smoke.
