23.01.2022 Grand Designs Charles Sturt University's Professor David Watson and honours student Mick Callan have used 3D printing technology to redesign the humble bird box, making it suitable for a variety of Australian wildlife. The new adaptable design - pictured below with a content resident - is built to mimic the microclimate of a real tree hollow. ... Suitable tree hollows can take up to 100 years to form naturally and this innovation could prove crucial in restoring habitat for wildlife after disasters such as bushfire.

19.01.2022 MEDITATION KEY TO AWARD FOR COBRAM PRIMARY SCHOOL It’s been a busy day at Cobram Primary School, clearing away the weekend’s storm damage. But the school is also celebrating a win in the Victorian Education Excellence Awards taking out the Outstanding School Improvement Award.... Principal Matt Knight says that school has seen great results after setting out to improve the "climate for learning." "We have a rurally isolated community, there’s quite a lot of disadvantage here in Cobram, but what we couldn’t allow was to have any excuses," he said. "Yes, we’re a long way from Shepparton and yes, we don’t have the advantages that some of the bigger towns do, but we wanted to make sure that when the kids walked in the gate at Cobram they were in a place where they felt safe, where it was predictable, and where they were engaged with learning and happy to be here." One strategy was to introduce meditation to the classroom. "When my social worker came to talk to me about it six years ago, I probably had a bit of a flabbergasted look on my face when she spoke about a mindfulness approach in classrooms." But now, Mr Knight and the students are on board. "For three to seven minutes after every break or transition, our kids come in and do some meditation and mindfulness and just get themselves into a place where they’re ready to learn again."

16.01.2022 HAVE YOU BEEN TEMPTED BY THEM? Afterpay, ZipPay, ZipMoney... Like everything, laybys are different these days. On most shopping websites and in a lot of stores and even salons, buy now, pay later schemes are there for people who don't have the cash then and there. But in the eyes of the banks, available limits on accounts with these companies are regarded as credit facilities, just like credit cards and will be seen as debts if you're applying for a loan.

The World Health Organisation has some great visual instructions David Kidd from Northeast Health Wangaratta says the recent coronavirus cases in Shepparton underline the importance of hand hygiene as "the main way to reduce cross-infections".... "It's really going to be that alarm bell people are going to need to hear now and again just to maintain the momentum," he said. "It's really reminded them again that this is actually really important and a part that everyone can play and do really easily."
14.01.2022 Summer has only just officially begun, but if you felt like it was already here - here's why.

09.01.2022 EVER WONDERED HOW THE POLLEN COUNT IS CALCULATED? The Melbourne Pollen Count tracks grass pollen levels at eight sites across Victoria and releases warnings to hay fever and asthma sufferers. The levels are calculated using an instrument called a Burkard spore trap (pictured).... "It’s essentially a small vacuum cleaner which sits on a rooftop somewhere, and it sucks in air at about the same rate that people breathe," explained Melbourne Pollen Count coordinator and associate professor at the University of Melbourne Ed Newbigin. Pollen grains stick to a microscope slide coated with an adhesive that moves with a clockwork motor. "[It’s] unusual to find that there’s still a place in scientific instrumentation for clockwork, but the Burkard spore trap is one of those examples." Every morning at 9 o’clock, a counter replaces the microscope slide and manually counts the grass pollen grains. On extreme days, there can be hundreds. At the Dookie site, Mohammad Safiqur Rahaman Shishir has been doing the counting. "I have to stain [the slide] with a solution that is violet in colour," he explained. "Once I put it in under the microscope it will show you oval-shaped, round-shaped, different shapes of pollen." "Sometimes it’s difficult but most of the time it’s very easy to find out grass pollens and other pollens, the differences between them." Ed Newbigin compared the counting to Sesame Street character The Count. "One one grass pollen grain! Two two grass pollen grains!" "It’s exactly like that, it’s a physical count so some of them use little clickers to help them do the count and so on, but it’s just a count."
