25.01.2022 WATER DEFICIENCY REVOKED Gairdner in the Shire of Jerramungup is the first region in Western Australia to have its water deficiency declaration revoked today. It comes after two months of above-average rainfall.... Despite the revocation, Water Minister Dave Kelly says farmers still face significant challenges. "While [this] is welcome news for locals, farmers across the region continue to be impacted by continued dry conditions as a result of climate change," he says. Water carting was suspended across WA in August following heavy rains across the south coast. Water deficiency declarations remain in place for 11 regions in the Great Southern and Esperance areas. 25.01.2022 STATE KEEPING OUT OF VISITOR CENTRE DEBATE Ahead of a potentially record-breaking Christmas tourist season, the WA Tourism Minister says the fate of Denmark's closed visitor centre is in the hands of the community. Mr Papalia says the State isn't interested in becoming a mediator between the Shire of Denmark and a local tourism group interested in re-launching the service.... Last month the Shire offered Denmark Tourism Incorporated a lease to re-launch the shuttered visitor centre and operate it until mid-2021. But DTI rejected it, saying it needs a longer deal to make it viable in the long term. Mr Papalia met with business leaders in the region last week and, despite mooted record holiday crowds this Christmas, says the State has no appetite to function as a mediator for the two groups. "Really it's up to those people and local governments to determine whether or not it's a sustainable, valuable contribution. Whether or not it's going to be a net cost or benefit," he said. "The local business community and the local government and the local tourism operators need to determine whether or not it's a priority for them and if it is, then they have to work out how to make it work."

25.01.2022 STEADY STREAM AT THE EUCLA BORDER Travellers from across Australia are entering Western Australia after the State's hard border eased for the first time in seven months. WA's tough COVID-19 border policy was significantly relaxed from midnight last night.... About 30 vehicles were lined up at the stroke of midnight at the border. Under the controlled border rules, people from all states and territories will no longer need a special reason to travel to WA. Travellers will not have to quarantine on arrival, with the exception of those coming from Victoria and New South Wales, who will be required to self-quarantine for a fortnight and take a coronavirus test on day 11. : WA Police

24.01.2022 Have the Greens Pool upgrades overlooked people with a disability? Tony Pedro lives near Denmark and says his friend recently took his son who is in a wheelchair to the newly renovated Greens Pool in Denmark. He found that there was no infrastructure available for that (wheelchair), Mr Pedro said.... At least the people with those disabilities within the community could’ve had access. The pool reopened two weeks ago after the WA Government invested $4.4 million into an upgrade that added a range of enhancements including an additional 64 car parks to the Greens Pool and Elephant Rocks areas. It seems to have been an oversight from my perspective, Mr Pedro said. A Parks and Wildlife Service spokesperson said the steepness of the sand the sand dunes and the inability to incorporate the required gradient of a ramp into the existing landscape made wheelchair access difficult. Upgrades recently completed under stages 1 and 2 included the addition of disability parking bays and improved access to walkways," the spokesperson said.
24.01.2022 PACKAGED SALMON PLAN MOVES AHEAD A plan to package salmon caught off WA's south coast and sell it across Australia and the world has taken a big step forward, with the first store-ready products arriving in Albany this month. Albany fisherman Tony Westerberg says about 36,000 individual packages arrived from Thailand last week.... The fish, which was caught in the cold waters off WA's south coast, was cleaned in town and sent to Thailand for packaging. The packaging was done overseas due to it being cheaper. Mr Westerberg has plans to build a cannery in Albany to do the packaging here, but it's hit a snag over fishing limits. He says he's pushing the State Government for an industry fishing quota of up to 3000 tonnes of salmon and up to 600 tonnes of herring a year, which would make the cannery viable in the long term. "We're getting things together ... we've just got to make sure the Fisheries Department allows us to access to the raw material [fish] - that's one of the most important things," he says.

16.01.2022 YOUR LIFE IS NOT WORTH A PHOTO This image of two people taking photos on a cliff's edge at the Natural Bridge is an eerily similar situation to how a man died at the spot in 2018, emergency services say. Albany Volunteer Rescue's Chris Johns says many people don't realise the risk of standing so close to the cliff's edge at The Gap and Natural Bridge.... This photo was taken at the weekend. "The number of people we've carried home in a horrible state, who didn't think it would happen to them but it did," he says. "We don't expect people to be wrapped in cotton wool but just think about that if something goes wrong, we'll be deployed." In 2018, a Perth man died after falling from a cliff at the nearby The Gap while posing for photos. Mr Johns says the image is particularly frustrating given the safe viewing platform in the background.

11.01.2022 ABORIGINAL CULTURAL CENTRE GAINS SUPPORT WA Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan says the State Government is looking seriously at plans for an Aboriginal cultural centre in Albany. A proposal for such a facility was made last year by Southern Aboriginal Corporation, but the organisation has failed to secure government support.... Ms MacTiernan says the State Government is looking to Albany's bicentenary in 20-26 for such a project to be realised. "With the bicentenary coming up, there's a really great opportunity for us to totally celebrate the Menang culture. We are certainly working very hard to see if we can develop a single unified vision for what a cultural facility would look like," she said. 10.01.2022 BODY FOUND AT INJIDUP A body was located at Injidup Beach in WA's south west just before 10am this morning. Police believe the body belongs to that of the 23-year-old female who went missing in the area on Sunday, October 25, however formal identification is yet to confirm this.... 09.01.2022 CHINA TARIFF WON'T HURT LOCAL WINES New tariffs on Australian wine imports to China won't have a significant impact on Great Southern wineries according to the local wine producers association. The Chinese Government announced it would introduce tariffs of up to 212 per cent on Australian wine imports from Saturday.... Great Southern Wine Producers Association Chairman Hunter Smith says China isn't a significant export market for the region. "Only 3-percent of our production from Western Australia goes to China. I'm not 100-percent sure what the Great Southern would be, but I would guess that it would be even lower than that," he said.
09.01.2022 'LUCKY' RESCUE AT OCEAN BEACH A man is lucky to be alive after his kayak flipped hundreds of metres off shore near Denmark last week. Local surfers assisted the man after seeing his vessel capsize on Friday afternoon about 300 metres off Ocean Beach.... He was recovered and taken to hospital in an ambulance. Surf school owner Mike Neunuebel says the man is lucky to be alive. "Before I got to him he'd already gone down once, and he'd come up because I was yelling at him. He was a long way off. Nobody was around. You could hardly see him. Unless there was a boat there real quick or a jet ski or something, nah he wouldn't have. I haven't been in that close of a call for a while," he said.
09.01.2022 MASSIVE METH & CASH HAUL WA Police have charged five men after seizing 13kg of methylamphetamine and almost $4 million in cash last month. 06.01.2022 ALBANY HOMELESS LIVING IN BUSHLAND The head of an Albany homelessness support group says a handful of people unable to secure housing in Albany are resorting to living in bushland. Pivot Support Services Albany CEO Ian Neil says about 50 people are living on the street or in tents in the town each night - and the matter is only getting worse.... Last week it was revealed Albany had the lowest rental vacancy rate in WA - with a rate of 0.6 per cent. Mr Neil says a lack of available housing makes it harder for people to get into secure housing. "We were discussing a young client this morning who has been going through difficult circumstances. He's now looking for a private rental and can't get one because of demand for rentals at the moment. It would be impossible for that person to get a rental in the Albany area," he said.
