24.01.2022 A 51-year-old Victorian woman has been fined more than $4,000 after she was caught hiding in a truck attempting to cross the border into Queensland. Police intercepted a prime mover at Texas on Wednesday where the Victorian resident was located hiding behind the driver’s seat. The woman and the 61-year-old male driver were each issued a $4,003 infringement for failing to comply with the Queensland Border Direction and directed to leave the state.... The discovery was made as part of a major COVID-19 compliance operation by Queensland Police Service targeting freight vehicles in Queensland. Officers intercepted a significant number of vehicles and while there were some issues identified, the vast majority of truck drivers clearly understood their requirements to social distance and limit their contact others while in Queensland, Acting Chief Superintendent Ray Rohweder said. Unfortunately, some drivers were not complying with laws around drug driving, fatigue management and vehicle maintenance.

It was the biggest codebreaking operation in Australia. By the end of the war they had 4,000 people working for them, it was so big they spilled out onto the Ascot racecourse. Historian David Dufty, who spent years researching the subject and interviewing the surviving codebreakers, says it should be bought as a museum to honour the men and women who served there. More than 80,000 hectares of Fraser Island (K'Gari) have been blackened by the fire and there are multiple fire fronts, the most concerning is near Kingfisher Bay Resort and Village. Residents and staff at Fraser Island's largest resort and the neighbouring village have been told to prepare to leave, with the fire warning this morning increased to Watch and Act level. The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) say the bushfire is travelling south from Boon Boon Creek towards the resort and village a day after guests were evacuated. Tour operators have backed calls for an inquiry into fire management and prevention.

"On average on any given day we have anywhere between 3-4 children rescued from hot cars across Queensland," she said. "Those are really startling numbers. All of those cases are accidental lock ins and not cases of intentional children being left in cars. ... "The key reasons why including parents giving their keys to children to play with, it's too dangerous, there is never a safe time to leave a child unattended in a car whether you are jumping in to get petrol, it takes as little as seven minutes for a car to reach 40 degrees from ambient, so from when you turn the car off.

Thankfully the three-year-old was found safe and well last night, and these heartwarming photos show the moment he was reunited with his family Sergeant Luke Fowler, the officer in charge of the Margaret River area, said the reunion was something hell always remember.... "To see a child reunited with Mum and Dad, cuddled up together on the bed, it was just, look, you couldnt describe the sheer happiness that was on, especially Mums face," he said. He had left his broken lawn mower outside his house for hard rubbish collection, but a stranger returned it to him fully repaired instead.... "Had a knock at the door this morning and opened it to find a man Id never met before, standing next to a lawn mower Id left on nature reserve to get picked up," Greg said. 09.01.2022 A Large Aerial Tanker (LAT) has been deployed to Fraser Island to help tackle the bushfire. The LAT was used to help prevent the fire from advancing further south. It has been burning on the island for more than four weeks.... Queensland Fire and Emergency Services - QFES today said the bushfire has been burning in the vicinity of Lake Bowarrady. Cathedrals on Fraser is now closed. Travellers are advised to check the QPWS website for updates and travel advice as other camping grounds and roads in the area may be closed.

09.01.2022 Some kindness to start your week! A Paddington resident had been practicing random acts of kindness by giving local residents free dog poo bags. After dealing with a frustrating situation of unwanted surprises constantly left out the front of her home, Caylie Jeffery decided to take action. ... Over a six Month period, Caylie had supplied the community with over 120 free bags. All was well until unwanted excrement was found under the 'free bags' sign on the front lawn when the dog bags happened to run out. After a Facebook post, Caylie received community support which led to someone in her community kindly replacing the bags for her as a way to pay it forward. 07.01.2022 What an incredible sight! Thousands of ducks have been set loose in rice paddies in Thailand for a regular clean-up that benefits rice and duck farmers alike. The ducks get a free feed, while taking care of pests like cherry snails, apple snails and weeds. They roam the paddies for about five months! ... Apiwat Chalermklin, the duck breeder in the video, says it reduces his costs to feed the ducks and helps the rice farmers reduce their use of pesticides and chemicals. In May 2020 during the coronavirus lockdown, we put out a call to all Queenslanders to contribute a textile square which would be made into a ‘quarantine quilt’. Over 200 squares were provided to make the quilt to represent a snapshot in time.... The blocks were stitched together by members of Queensland Spinners, Weavers and Fibre Artists (QSWFA) a mammoth task which took more than 108 hours . The time has finally come and the famous quilt is now being showcased at the The Queensland State Library after being donated by ABC Brisbane. The Queensland State Library is in the process of digitising the quilt's squares and making the images live on their catalogue. Well done to all involved, it was a great community effort! Justin Coomber from Energex said 413,000 lightning strikes were counted throughout the day yesterday in south-east Queensland. "That’s a massive amount, when we consider all the storms in the previous week added up to about just under one million lightning strikes for the whole week."...
