25.01.2022 COCKATOO ISLAND MINE DEAL DONE A historic Kimberley iron ore mine mothballed over complex financial and legal issues could be back in production before the end of next year. Operations at the Cockatoo Island mine, which sits in the Buchaneer Archipelago, ceased in 2015 because of a weak iron ore market.... It's been out of action amid ongoing environmental issues, but a Hong Kong-based entity struck a deal to take control of the mine last week. Pragma Lawyers managing director Aaron McDonald, whose firm helped close the deal with Cockatoo Island Mining, says it's been a long time coming. "It's been a huge mammoth marathon of work to make it happen and I've never been involved in something so big," he said. "This company has interests not only on Cockatoo Island but on the adjoining two islands as well. "They see a future in the resource around there and a lot of money [has gone into] lawyers and insolvency practitioners to get the deal across the line, so they're looking for the long term."

25.01.2022 What a stunning painting! This piece by Inverell artist Cameilia Edwards is called 'Kindred Hearts'. It just took home the 2020 Inverell Shire Council Acquisition Prize. ... Ms Edwards said the painting was inspired by a photograph taken by Edwina Robertson near Carnavon, WA where she was highlighting the plight of Aussies in the outback. She said she grew up near Ms Robertson and they went to boarding school together, so the collaboration came naturally. "When I saw the photograph I knew it would make an amazing painting. It depicts so much emotion," she said. "I approached Edwina and she was happy for me to paint it." : CameiliaGrace art via ABC New England North West

22.01.2022 HOT REAL ESTATE The availability of rental properties has dropped to an all-time low in three Kimberley towns. There are 6 houses available for rent in Kununurra, 7 in Derby and 27 properties in Broome this week.... Things are pretty tight in the Kimberley, Tony Hutchinson, Branch president for the Real Estate Institute of WA, said. The listings for rent are down 58%. We haven't got any new stock and there’s plenty of demand. WA’s Covid emergency legislation, which is in place until March, is also putting a squeeze on rental properties. Mr Hutchinson predicts an increase in rents when the legislation is lifted, allowing landlords to review the lease. Mr Hutchinson, who’s been a real estate agent for more than 30 years, says a lack of housing stock is due in part to fewer homes being built, with people choosing to buy an existing house because it’s cheaper than building. However, he said there’s been an increase in land sales through the stimulus packages offered by government. Houses are selling more quickly; an average of 35 days in September 2020, compared to 86 days for the same time last year. Prices have increased marginally. There’s multiple offers on properties and in some cases people are bidding or offering above the asking price, he said.

22.01.2022 MPS ASBESTOSIS DIAGNOSIS WA Greens MP Robin Chapple has recently been diagnosed with asbestosis. The 73-year-old member for the mining and pastoral region was exposed to asbestos when he worked as a mechanical engineer near Wittenoom in 1976.... The declared contaminated site was shut in 1966 and Mr Chapple said the area needs to be cleaned up to remove any hazardous materials. He told the ABC he was diagnosed earlier this year, but still feels well. "Ive said for many, many years, touch wood I seem to be one of the lucky ones. And then recently I picked up the diagnosis that I do have asbestosis," he said. Mr Chapple said his diagnosis had motivated him to again call for the removal of stock piles of asbestos still present at the abandoned townsite. "Its mostly one of Australias worst ecological disasters, it sits there just blowing in the wind and flowing down the Fortescue River," he said. "If there was a to be a mine rehabilitation program that was to be the mine that needs to be rehabilitated."

18.01.2022 YAKKA MUNGA INVESTIGATION Environmentalists have criticised a long-running State Government investigation into a land-clearing scandal in the Kimberley. Zenith Australia Investment Holding was ordered to stop work at Yakka Munga, near Derby, in June last year, after Aboriginal native title holders blockaded the station gates.... It's now been over a year since the Department of Environment, Water and Regulation said they would fine the company over the clearing, and the investigation is ongoing. Environs Kimberley director Martin Pritchard, says the process is taking too long. It’s not sending a very strong message to companies and what we need is the government to take action - strong action - to show that they are really serious about protecting the Kimberley. They know how special it is, he said. It's been a very long time now since the illegal clearing came to light, and we'd have been hoping the government would have cleared this up by now. A spokeswoman for WA Environment Minister Stephen Dawson says investigations can be time consuming due to the complexity and scale, but remediation work at the site is under way.

15.01.2022 PERTH-KOOLAN DIRECT FLIGHTS UNDERWAY One of Australia's oldest iron ore mines located on an island off the Kimberley coast, has received the first commercial jet on it's new twenty-million dollar sealed airstrip. Mount Gibson Iron restarted production at Koolan Island last April, following more than three years closure after a sea wall collapsed and caused extensive flooding on site in 2014. ... It had its new airstrip certified a month ago and its first flight landed on Wednesday. Chief executive Peter Kerr said the direct flights would increase the productivity of the operation, as well as being more cost-efficient than flying Perth staff to site via Broome on small aircraft. "That has a range of productivity and fatigue based savings, particularly for people who are also coming off the island at the end of their two week shift," he said. Mr Kerr said smaller charter flights would still operate from Kimberley towns for locally-based employees. He said the airstrip was currently licensed for the mine use only, but there may be other uses for it beyond the life of the mine. "We're working closely with the Dambimangari Aboriginal Corporation, so that's the Traditional Owner group, because there are no doubt going to be a range of ideas - perhaps oil and gas, perhaps tourism, perhaps other things - which could make productive use of the airstrip," Mr Kerr said. A State Government spokesperson said they would not support the use of the airstrip for other uses, such as supply base activities, or transfer of personnel for other resource projects. The State Government supports the development of Broome as a Kimberley region logistics hub for the oil and gas industry and will not support proposals that seek to bypass the town. There was 2.3 million metric tonnes of high grade iron ore sold from Koolan Island last financial year, with nine shipments setting sail for Asian markets in the September quarter. The Koolan mine currently has a five-year mine life but there is the possibility that could be extended down the track. : Supplied by Mount Gibson Iron

12.01.2022 NEW SLY-GROGGING LAWS MAY CLAMP DOWN ON ONLINE ORDERING Concerns have been raised about large amount of mail-order alcohol being delivered to the Kimberley, despite local liquor restrictions. Every week, large amounts of beer, wine and spirits are ordered online and delivered to homes and Post Offices across the region.... That’s despite liquor restrictions being in place in most communities, including bans on all take-away alcohol except light beer in Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek. Liberal MP Ken Baston has raised the issue repeatedly in state parliament. I think it is a bit of a double standard, and it would be good to have it sorted out, he told ABC Kimberley. I don’t think it should be a matter of stopping or stamping out online sales, but the local retailers should have the same rights to sell alcohol, so that it’s an equal playing field. In response to questions he asked in early November, Minister Alannah MacTiernan confirmed localised liquor restrictions are not enforced when it comes to online ordering. She told Parliament that the anomaly is being looked at as part of new sly-grogging laws. Following amendments to the Liquor Control Act regulations are currently being developed to combat sly grogging to vulnerable communities, she said. [That] includes to restricted or dry communities, and for the home delivery of liquor anywhere in Western Australia. Have you noticed much online alcohol being delivered to your town or community, and do you think it increases sly grogging? While we may have kept the virus from WA, we know it can devastate communities extremely quickly. 06.01.2022 MUSIC PROGRAM BRINGS COMMUNITY TOGETHER "It was so good to see, these kids were just laughing and smiling and by the second day the girls were just knocking on our door rehearsing and recording that song" - Shirley Brown, KAMS. Health professionals and musicians in the Kimberley have started a new women's music program in three remote communities, aimed at improving the social and emotional well being of women in the area....
