18.01.2022 Army personnel have finished their operation at the George Chaffey Bridge this morning. Inspector Darren Brand said NSW Police are now alone in manning the Abbotsford, Chaffey, Tooleybuc and Euston bridges, with extra police members due to arrive in the region as the hot weather approaches. "For a long time, we had the Air Force down here as a branch of the ADF helping out and in the last month or so, they've been replaced by army [personnel]," Insp Brand said.... "It doesn't matter which branch of the ADF we've had here, they have been outstanding and I think they have upheld the best traditions of the ADF." NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian this week said she would not make a decision on re-opening the border to Victoria, until she saw the effect of easing restrictions. Motorists have been experiencing a half an hour to 45 minutes journey when crossing the George Chaffey Bridge between Mildura and Buronga. "I can tell you that I've been working very closely with Vicroads and [Victoria Police] and Mildura police specifically around doing whatever it is we can to reduce delays," Insp Brand said. "I would just implore people where they could, to remain patient please, and keep in mind that you've got a bunch of good people working day and night, 24 hours a day in all sorts of weather to try and get you through that checkpoint as quickly as you can. "We're a lot closer to the end than we are to the start."

15.01.2022 TOTAL FIRE BAN for the MALLEE and WIMMERA on Tuesday 1 December Includes Buloke North and South, Gannawarra, Mildura, Swan Hill, Yarriambiack, Hindmarsh, Horsham, Northern Grampians and West Wimmera council areas. Fire danger will be SEVERE. What CAN and CAN’T you do? ... A total fire ban means no fires in the open air. ‘Open air’ means anywhere outside, including a deck, balcony, courtyard or park. Includes cities and towns. Runs 12.01am -11.59pm Tuesday 1 December Cooking outside is restricted to gas and electric barbecues only, with conditions. No "hot works" like welding or grinding. Penalties apply for breaking the rules. What does ‘SEVERE’ mean? Expect extremely hot, dry and windy conditions. If a fire starts and takes hold, it will be hard for firefighters to bring under control. Well prepared homes that are actively defended can provide safety. You must be physically and mentally prepared to defend in these conditions. If you are not prepared, leaving bushfire prone areas early in the day is your safest option.

09.01.2022 An investigation into allegations of water mismanagement, particularly in the Barwon-Darling River, has ruled there was no corrupt conduct but found the NSW Government had been "overly favourable" to irrigators when forming policy.
09.01.2022 The NSW water watchdog has fined Wentworth Shire Council $1500 for making alterations to the Pooncarie town weir that didn't comply with a works approval. The Natural Resources Access Regulator alleged the alteration impacted water flows and fish passage on the Darling River and had the potential to affect the first fish breeding event in the river in four years. The state's Fisheries Minister has already imposed an exclusion zone for recreational anglers immediately downstr...eam of the weir. NRAR’s director for water regulation in the state's west, Greg Abood, said the regulator had thoroughly investigated the matter, weighing up the severity of the breach, the council’s culpability and attitude towards the investigation, the impact on the natural environment and other water users, as well as the public interest. As a risk-based regulator, we employ a graduated and proportionate approach to all alleged breaches of water laws, Mr Abood said. NRAR issued Wentworth Shire Council with a stop work order to cease using the unauthorised addition and requires the council to remove the work when it is safe to do so. Water laws are in place to ensure that all water users and the environment have fair access to water. This becomes even more important if our natural resources are negatively impacted, Mr Abood continued The community expects water utilities to be exemplars of the law and that water users across the state will be held to account. "NRAR agrees with this sentiment, which is why it is appropriate in this instance for us to have taken this action. More: https://www.abc.net.au//pooncarie-weir-concerns-f/12764706

05.01.2022 Lower Murray Water has issued a red alert level warning for blue-green algae in Lake Cullulleraine. The declaration follows red alert warnings being extended on the Murray River from Red Cliffs to Lock 9. Lower Murray Water managing director Anthony Couroupis said it was an unfortunate situation ahead of a hot weekend.... We understand this is not the news the community wants to hear, especially with the hot weather expected over the weekend and the Australia Day public holiday approaching, he said. While it is not possible to predict how long algae will remain at high levels, LMW will continue regular monitoring at Lake Cullulleraine and the community will be notified as levels reduce. Blue-green algae usually appear as green paint-like scums on the water, near the edges, or as greenish clumps throughout the water. The water may appear dirty, green or discoloured and may also have a strong musty or earthy odour. People who believe they may have been affected by blue-green algae are advised to seek medical advice. Signage will be in place on the foreshore of Lake Cullulleraine to alert visitors to the warnings in place.
