It has also pledged to spend $1.5 million on the project over the next four years.... SES Ballina unit commander, Gerry Burnage, said no-one would miss the old building. "Has been known that we've had to tarp our own roof," he said. "We needed raincoats on to work in the shed. "The council keep patching it up for us, keeping it alive. 21.01.2022 CLARENCE CAMPERS LEAVE TRAIL OF TRASH Property owners along the Clarence River, north west of Grafton , say unregulated camping in the area is out of control. Emma Farmer is concerned about illegal campers who regularly squat on her father's property, adjacent to the Lilydale campground, leaving a trail of trash. ... She said it's an equally big concern for residents surrounding a similar campsite downstream at Copmanhurst. "The worst part is all the fires, so everyone is lighting their own campfires. Although there's a camp block there, they're just toileting really wherever there's a tree - so there's just toilet paper strewn everywhere and dirty nappies. " It's just really sad to see the environment just being so badly affected." A NSW Government Crown Lands spokesman says the department is aware of complaints about inappropriate vehicle camping and other anti-social behaviour and will work with Clarence Valley Council to undertake compliance action.

20.01.2022 This is one of my favourite images from Yaegl Country words and by Renae Saxby. She said: "National NAIDOC Week is a time of year in Australia when Black Lives do Matter. Normally held in the first full week of July, 2020 has seen COVID-19 push National NAIDOC Week out to 8 November until 15 November. This year more than ever our community needs to come together to celebrate our strength in our cultural identity, country and our relationships with each other. This year th...e theme for National NAIDOC Week is Always Was Always Will Be recognising that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are spiritually and culturally connected to this country, our collective adaptation and intimate knowledge of Country enabled us to endure climate change, catastrophic droughts and rising sea levels. We have always worked together to share our skills and knowledge to benefit our people, our culture and country. There are elements of Aboriginal First Nations culture that are ancient and enduring and some that have evolved in response to colonisation. Culture continues to evolve and our First Nations culture has evolved through the impacts of genocide and through the impacts of new technologies. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture is the oldest living culture on planet earth and the theme for NAIDOC Week celebrates the hard work of our old people to ensure this legacy for our people."

13.01.2022 TWEED'S TREATED WATER SAFE TO DRINK DESPITE A BLUE-GREEN ALGAE AMBER ALERT The Tweed Shire Council is advising residents that the treated water remains safe to drink despite the blue-green algae alert for Bray Park Weir rising to amber, again. Algae alerts have been current for the weir pool, where the bulk of the Tweed's water is drawn for treatment, since early September moving between green and amber alert levels.... Light rain in October increased flows in the Tweed River partially flushing the weir pool and downgrading the then amber alert to green. But, with no follow-up rain and increasingly hot temperatures algal growth has again been stimulated in the weir pool. Water and Wastewater Operations manager, Brie Jowett says the council has adjusted its water treatment processes at the Water Treatment Plant to deal with the latest amber alert. "This action removes the earthy taste and odour compounds we experienced last week," said Ms Jowett. "Council is monitoring the algae levels in all raw water sources,". Blue-green algae occur naturally and can reproduce quickly in favourable environmental conditions.

10.01.2022 A Greek inspired weekend breakfast dish this morning by Chef David Lovett as he takes advantage of all the beautiful greens available at this time of year to create his take on spanakopita. David says, Receiving beautiful locally grown greens each week is a joy, but sometimes I have some leftovers. So with the help of my girlfriend and a wonderfully kind and willing supplier, I’ve put together this delightful Greek inspired pie that sells like hotcakes at breakfast time!... He shared the recipe with Presenter Angela Catterns on Saturday Breakfast this morning. If you missed out, here are all the details. David’s Feta and Greens Pie 1/2 packet filo pastry, thawed 1kg greens, a mix of spinach, silverbeet, kale, cavolo nero, baby fennel or garlic. Remove any stringy stalks from the greens. 1 bunch dill, chopped 2 white onions, peeled and sliced 2 cloves garlic, chopped 2 tablespoons butter 500gm feta cheese Zest of 1 lemon 1 egg Salt & pepper Fill a pot with water, bring to boil and cook your greens for 5 minutes, drain and cool for 5 minutes. Once cool roughly chop and place into a bowl. In a small pan, melt the butter and gently cook the onion and garlic until soft but not coloured. Add the onion mix to your greens along with dill, lemon zest, egg and feta. Mix very well. Oil a spring form tin, and add sheets of filo, oiling each one as you go, allow them to hang over the sides of tin. You’ll need about 10-12 sheets. Fill the tin with the mixture and fold over the overlapping filo pastry. Brush the top of the filo pastry sheets with oil and bake at 180 for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Allow to cool for 30 minutes before cutting into wedges to serve.

That could include a phased retreat from the current advancing coastal erosion if required. Similar work was done last year when severe erosion threatened infrastructure at the adjacent Reflections Holiday Park.

04.01.2022 The north coast is mourning the loss of Uncle Kevin Torrens who was a loved and respected Elder of the Western Bundjalung people. [Advisory: Posted with the permission of Mr Torrens' family] Most knew Mr Torrens as a softly spoken man, who brought a gentle but persistent persuasion to being a trailblazer, committed to improving the lives of his people. ... In 1982 when he was one of New South Wales' first Aboriginal teacher aides he started the preschool at Tabulam - and with parents and the Education Department provided a place for the Indigenous and non-Indigenous children of Tabulam to learn and play. For 12.5 years he was part of the Aboriginal cultural support and case management teams of the Balund-a Program, the world's only correctional facility where offenders are sent to live and work before they are sentenced, in a bid to keep them out of prison. He was a cultural mentor to residents and his work colleagues. The story in this video post was another pioneering achievement. When Mr Torrens' ageing father-in-law Ernie Hickling asked him to get back the lands of his ancestors, it seemed like an impossible mission, but he succeeded against all odds. That property called Jubal was among the first land purchases in the early years of the Indigenous Land Corporation's buy back scheme. "Those early ones are significant because in those first few years it was about building the Indigenous estate," Ms Button said. The team at ABC North Coast send our condolences to Mr Torrens' family, friends and the Bundjalung peoples.

04.01.2022 POPULAR TOURIST DRIVE NOT YET READY FOR STATE BORDER OPENING Despite state borders re-opening tomorrow, December 1, Kyogle Council says drivers won't be able to use the Lions Road straight away.
