25.01.2022 TILBA TILBA LAKE ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY Landholders join a pilot program to remove grazing stock out of Tilba Tilba Lake to help rehabilitate the catchment, after the NSW Government rated the estuary as the worst of its kind and gave the South East Local Land Services $4.5 million to improve the water quality. The program is now moving to Wapengo and Middle Lagoon as part of the Marine Estate Management Strategy.

25.01.2022 THE NIMMITY BELL IS BACK The 1.8 tonne bronze bell has returned to Nimmitabel, after it fell and injured the projects primary advocate, Howard Charles. The Bells committee welcomed the "Nimmity Bells" return home on Friday, including the groups coordinator Mr Charles.... The 77-year-old was injured in July, after the Bell fell on him. The accident resulted in 10 of his bones breaking and his right leg to be partially amputated. Mr Charles has been advocating for the Bell to be erected in Nimmitabel for the past five years and celebrated its return to the town. "I was a bit like Humpty Dumpty when they took me to hospital, but they put me back together again and Im really feeling well," he said. "Ive been passionate about it for five years...the Bell really does look wonderful when its up on the pedestal." Mr Charles is awaiting for his prosthetic foot to be fitted in the coming days. Minister for Transport Andrew Constance said changes to the mobile speed camera program, including the removal of warning signs, would roll out over the next 12 months. The announcement was made as part of National Road Safety week.... The State Government is also introducing a new combined offence of driving while under the influence of both drugs and alcohol.

16.01.2022 COUNCILLOR FITZPATRICK ELECTED AS NEW BEGA VALLEY MAYOR Councillor Russell Fitzpatrick has just been elected as the new Mayor of the Bega Valley Shire Council. Councillor Fitzpatrick previously served as Deputy Mayor, alongside outgoing Mayor Sharon Tapscott.... Councillor Tapscott announced prior to the vote that she would not run again as Mayor and has plans to retire from Local Government in the near future. Councillor Fitzpatrick, Tapscott, Dodds, Griff and Seckold voted in favour of Fitzpatrick as Mayor. Councillor Kristy McBain abstained from voting. Meanwhile, Councillor Liz Seckold was elected at Deputy Mayor. Councillor Seckold, Fitzpatrick, Tapscott and Allan all voted for Councillor Seckold. There's a Severe Weather Warning for DAMAGING WINDS for people in parts of the Southern Tablelands and Snowy Mountains today, with DAMAGING NORTHWESTERLY WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with gusts in excess of 90 km/h are expected to develop in the warning area later tonight. The bridge span is scheduled to open at 2PM today (Friday 13 November) for 10 minutes, weather permitting. The concrete segments are starting to encroach on the navigation channel, so the new 12 metre vertical height limit for boats on the Clyde River is now in place. The Project Manager for Transport NSW Kylie Curran said the Old Punt boat ramp will temporarily reopen for river access during construction. ... "The Clyde St boat ramp will be closed temporarily and well open that back up later in the project. Were going to be installing a crane there to finish off the southern part of the bridge," she said. 03.01.2022 GREAT NEWS! The Giant Burrowing Frog seems to have survived the bushfires! Despite the fires burning through much of its habitat in Gippsland and on the Far South Coast, there are signs the vulnerable species will be okay. Program Manager with Victoria's Forest Protection Survey Program Jamie Molloy said about 350 Giant Burrowing Frog tadpoles were found in ponds in the remote Maramingo area near Genoa. "Pretty much the majority of the range of this frog has been burnt, so t...here's been a lot of concern for the Giant Burrowing Frog but also for many other species," he said. Victoria's Department of Land, Water and Planning said the frog's habitat will be protected from timber harvesting, with a zone covering a 2km strip along the creek.
