It's important to keep pets and children under control and let them be birds. They don't need rescuing they just need some space.

18.01.2022 CRABBING SEASON OPENS TOMORROW Most commercial and recreational crab fisheries, from Minninup Beach in Bunbury to the Swan/Canning Rivers in Perth, will open tomorrow (December 1)! There was a three-month closure to protect pre-spawning female blue swimmer crabs in those areas.... DPIRD said there are plenty of crabs around but at the start of the season many will be undersize - so if you go crabbing, make sure you measure them carefully. 17.01.2022 PHONE TOWER FOR LANE POOLE A new telecommunications facility will be installed in Lane Poole Reserve’s Nanga campgrounds to improve visitor safety. In the case of an emergency, visitors in the area will be able to receive text message notifications with important safety information via the State Emergency Alert System, as well as call authorities to report emergencies. ... The facility will also provide coverage to the second Nanga entry station and nearby Trees Adventure tourism provider, enabling both areas to provide EFTPOS facilities. Construction began last month and is expected to be completed by the end of November 2020.

13.01.2022 #BREAKING: Mining billionaire Clive Palmer has LOST his High Court challenge against WA's COVID-19 border closures. Mr Palmer's lawyers told the High Court the closure breached section 92 of the constitution which guarantees movement between states. But the WA government told the court the closures were justified because they were reasonable and necessary to stop the spread of the virus in the state.... Several states, including Victoria, Queensland and Tasmania backed Western Australia in the case.

12.01.2022 Australia's largest survey of truck drivers, led by Monash University, found half of all truckies suffered psychological distress. The study found the percentage of drivers aged under 35 suffering severe distress was almost double that of the average Australian male of the same age.

Paul Irvine shot these pictures on the edge of a suburban pond in Mandurah last week. "Seriously one of the single most unusual and amazing things I've seen in shooting spiders so far," he said.... "A night hunt with no expectation other than to get out of the house turned into a night of jubilation and excitement of finding this crazy spider. "Not only that but we found hundreds in one localised spot of differing colours and sizes but this was the most stunning by far. Hope you like these." 09.01.2022 WA's RISKIEST ROAD BEGINS FIX A 17-kilometre section of Bussell Highway will be duplicated, fixing a notorious bottleneck between Capel and Busselton that was previously voted WA’s riskiest road in an RAC survey. Over 15,000 vehicles use this section of highway every day and it is hoped that it will not only save lives but remove the bottleneck that has caused long lines of traffic, especially during holiday periods.... WA Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said that the $85 million project will support 570 direct and indirect jobs. This project, combined with the Bunbury Outer Ring Road, will save motorists travelling between Perth and Busselton at least 15 minutes - and likely a lot more during holiday periods. Work on upgrading the 5 kilometres between the Capel Bypass and Hutton Road is expected to be completed in mid-2021. The second stage is being prepared and will include construction of the remaining 12-kilometre section between Hutton Road and Busselton, along with three bridges.

07.01.2022 SHARK MONITORING RECEIVERS INSTALLED AT BUNKER BAY Two Shark Monitoring Network receivers are being installed at Bunker Bay today. This follows a shark bite incident at Bunker Bay in July earlier this year and the fatal shark attack of Kyle Burden in 2011. ... The City of Busselton will operate the new shark warning system tower on the beach, which can be activated to alert water users when a tagged shark is detected in the area. Fisheries Minister Peter Tinley said it's important for beach goers to remember the receivers detect tagged sharks only so if you see a shark report it to Water Police on 9442 8600.

07.01.2022 ILLEGAL CAMPFIRE WARNING Parks and Wildlife services are urging people to follow total fire ban rules after several illegal campfires were lit during total fire ban days in the South West last week. There were multiple total fire bans in place around the region as temperatures soared and fire warnings were high.... Seven campfires were reported to Parks and Wildlife in the Collie and Harvey areas and one was reported in the lower South West region. A spokeswoman said the campers were issued with warnings and reminded of the hefty fines associated with lighting fires during total fire bans.

06.01.2022 A 23-year-old woman has been flown to hospital in critical condition after being hit by a car in Collie overnight. The incident happened outside the Crown Hotel in Collie at 11 PM, where two women aged 23 and 18 were hit by a car. The 23-year old was taken by helicopter to Royal Perth hospital, while the 18-year old is being treated at Collie hospital in a serious condition.... Police Authorities are continuing to investigate what provoked the incident. A man is assisting police with their inquiries. Owner of A B Sea Charters Kurt Hanould witnessed the rare sight early this year.... "It was a little bit of a shock at first because it's quite large and as you can imagine it was brand new and the placenta was probably half a metre long," he said at the time. 04.01.2022 DAMAGING WINDS ACROSS THE SCARP Parts of the South West is set to face some wild weather today, as extreme winds and heat are expected. A severe weather warning is in place for the Lower West and South West districts, with strong, gusty and potentially damaging winds expected.... The Bureau of Meteorology says areas which may be affected include Harvey and Dwellingup. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services says winds with gusts reaching 90 kilometres an hour could cause damage to homes and property and urged residents to be cautious.

03.01.2022 SMOKE ALERT FOR THE SOUTH WEST The Parks and Wildlife Service has issued a Smoke Alert for people travelling along the South Western Highway and Coalfields Highway near Burekup, Roelands and Brunswick Junction in the Shires of Harvey and Dardanup. There is also a smoke alert current for Nannup, Balingup, Bunbury, Capel, Boyanup, Donnybrook and surrounds in the South West. ... The smoke is the result of a prescribed burn being carried our by Parks and Wildlife Service in the area. The smoke is expected to clear by tomorrow morning. WHAT TO DO: If the smoke is particularly thick, it is recommended people shut doors and windows and turn off air-conditioners. Smoke may reduce visibility on some roads and motorists should take care, turn on headlights and travel at appropriate speeds when travelling in these areas. People with asthma and pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular illnesses should follow their pre-prepared treatment plan. People with conditions exacerbated by smoke should take precautions in line with their medical advice for these circumstances. 01.01.2022 BOYUP BROOK'S BIG THING Wagin has the big ram, Harvey has a big orange and now Boyup Brook is set to have a big viewing tower. The council and the local cooperative are investigating the possibility of building a 28 metre viewing tower that would allow visitors to see in excess of 20km away in all directions.... The tower will cost $629,000 and Boyup Brook Co-operative chairman Michael Wright says the project is designed to draw in visitors. "Most little towns around have some sort of a lookout, Boyup doesn't have one," he said. "Nannup has one nearby on a hill, Bridgetown has a little one inside the town. "It's just another idea to hold people in the town, hopefully they'll have a coffee or stay at the caravan park and enjoy the different things that are available to do and see in Boyup." 01.01.2022 FIRE FIGHTER NUMBERS SURGE The Shire of Denmark has recruited a record 50 new volunteer fire fighters heading into summer. The Shire's Bushfire Risk Planning coordinator Melanie Haymont said the surge is likely in response to the Black Summer bushfires on the east coast.... "The fires on the east coast occurred in similar vegetation types to what we have over here in Denmark," she said. "People were a little bit complacent here because it's damp, really green...our programs have been informing people where we live and what the real risks are."
